BOTM 199: Roosevelt, Monarch - First Spoiler - 1AD
botm199small.jpg

Use this thread to tell us what happened in your game, up to 1AD. Where did you settle? Did the warning in the game announcement about the gold influence your decision? How did you cope with the maze map? With the no-espionage? With the different culture rules associated with no-espionage? And with the AIs?

Reading Requirements
If you are participating in BOTM 199, then you MUST NOT read this thread unless EITHER

  • You have reached at least 1 AD in your game, OR
  • You have submitted your entry

Posting Restrictions
  • Do not disclose ANY events or information gained post 1 AD.
  • Do not reveal your final result if that happened after 1 AD.
  • Do not discuss the location of resources that may not show up before 1 AD (Iron is OK, coal and oil are not)

Moved 1S first before settling PH 2W. That was 3T spent. The only reaonable spot for city 2 was on the gold to gain access to 2 Fish (of which 1 fairly quick inside cultire due to fast 2nd borderpop of cap). Unpleasant dotmapping further on those 3 tile wide stretches.of land.

By 1 AD I have 7 cities, 30 pop. Not a big Yahoo. The sheep spot in the north is still open. On my south border is a barb city at the dyes, Both about to be seized. I did settle the gems island.
Oracled MC, built Mids 750BC and of course GLH 1400BC. Will build Colossus too. CS / Constr / Cal are in (no Aest). I have to self tech a lot. As usual the AI are terribly slow on watermaps. My fingers itch to :hammer: someone, but I'll probably do some more groundwork first.

I moved both warrior and settler NW on T0 and moved the warrior NW again on T1, which after some deliberation made me settle on the flood plain 1N2W from the starting position on T1. 2 food resources and gold seemed to be enough compensation for losing the FP. I had some hope of being able to use the other fish with another city, which proved to be the case when I could settle on the NE tip of the Mongol island. I settled two more off-shore places in the gem island and the island east from Mansa with whales and clams. These nicely boosted the GLH. I was also happy to have built Stonehenge, proved quite useful for the (slow) border pops. Also got the Pyramids. Mansa beat me to a half hearted attempt at the Oracle, he seems to be hoarding religions (he founded 4 by 1AD). Got 9 cities, 34 pop in 1AD. Hope to settle some cities on the southern part of the Spanish island and will then go after Mansa probably.

Exact same start for me.

I'm going for the religion/wonder whore award.
I settled on the stone 2nd, so I could get Henge and GW with the intention of bulbing Theo and DivineRight with the Prophets (and I did that)
Oracled CoL for Confu.
(plan to) Bulb Philo for Tao.
Mansa spread Hindu and Budda auto-spread. I need him to spread Judaism tho.
So I should have 7 religions and 7 cathedrals in each legendary city.

10 cities including the one expensive city ON marble south of Mansa.

I chariot rushed Genghis down to 1 city cus I wanted his best food cities and workers.
That landmass is separate so:
a) colony expenses get out of control if you settle too much.
b) you get good trade rts with yourself.
c) The GreatWall doesn't work there! :run:

Built:
Henge,
Great Wall
Oracle
(passed on Temple of Art)
GreatLighthouse
Colossus
Zeus
HangingGardens

Working on : MoM, Chichen, Parthenon, Paya
Soon-ish: Hagia, ApPalace

Not sure why I skipped the Mids other than it's 500, and I didn't really want a GE born.

125 AD. After a couple of turns of scouting, I decided not to go for culture. It looks like a GLH/expansion map to me with various interesting resources. Settled on the FP, surely a very decent capitol. I have not build or worked a single cottage yet (against my nature) so I don't miss the FP. My idea was to get super early Moais for more production and when I saw copper later, I wanted Collossus as well. 6 cities at the moment. Calender is in, so the cities become better now. Thanks to Rosys nice traits, I have almost everywhere Granary + Forge + CH. I'm in full hammer mode already now with OR, Forges, Moai.

My little "trick" for early border pops and avoiding monuments was to whip TGW in the 2. city and to chop Oracle in the third city.

Wonders: Moai + TGW 1360 BC / GLH 925 BC / Oracle (Metal Casting) 825 BC / Collossus 350 BC. The first GM bulbed CS and I hope for an GE next to plant down the MoM.
With machinery next I could hit someone with Maces. I think it's better to take someone out from another landmass because that will give me better TR. Have not checked out what land they have. Mansa is a bad target anyway because he is the only useful trading partner, if ever.

I moved my settler NNW, then W (after the warrior discovered the fish). That let me work one fish and the, and latter to put a workboat on the second fish strictly for trading.

By 1 AD I have seven cities, including one captured from barbs. The AI have beat me to all of the wonders I wanted so far.

Moved the warrior NW and saw the FP I suspected was there. Settler 2N1W, then settled on the FP. Don't like to do that, but seemed like the best move here. Gold plus doublefood. It has mostly only had one food because I settled south so that city has mostly borrowed the pig. The capital is therefore only size 9, but I'm growing it decently now with a bit more happy-room. Want to build HG there, but don't know if I will be first. It's already late.

Awkward to place cities here, and I stayed at 1 and 2 for unusually long. But built a very early GLH (1700-ish BC), which did nothing at that point, but soon after we got those nice 3:commerce: trade routes with Genghis, which was cool. Until I invaded and killed him with HAs :trouble: Somehow he failed to tech IW and hook up the iron before he was dead, though he was working on it when that city fell (which was horrifically placed without being coastal).

Didn't try for the Oracle, but it went superlate, like 600BC or thereabouts. Don't think I even tried, although I thought about it post-Alpha, but was too busy with that HA business. Have found some more AIs, but still missing two. See some borders tho. Cities on Genghis' continent are very expensive due to colony maintenance, so I'm getting out some courthouses. Also helps with borderpops. He had also built Stonehenge, so that helps a little too. Amusingly Genghis died to a HA coming off the boat. Bet he was surprised! :viking:

Mansa has founded 3 religions. Only 3 of my cities are Hindu thanks to 3 Mansa missionaries. I've not founded a city on the gem island, but am working on a galley on that side of the land for it. Already get 2c for all internal trade routes, but would still be nice with that gem.

Forgot to look at pop before closing the game, but I have 11 cities (Genghis had 5 I think) and am doing a shade short of 200 :science: at 1AD. Civil Service is in, and I opted to go for Machinery myself. Very unusual, but the AIs are pretty slow here, even Mansa. He had apparently started on MC when I traded him that for Calendar tho, as I had to pay a little gold. Because we have Mansa as the only realistic trade partner, I actually miss espionage a bit. Would have been nice to know what he is working on. However, it's also comfy to look at those graphs now and then, with everything accessible.

Did have a slight hope of killing a bunch of guys with HAs, but it looks too awkward to get to them. Most seem alone on their own islands. May try to get something done with Maces and possibly Trebs, but we'll see. Suppose it will be a dom/conq game, I just hope I don't need astro as that bulb is ruined due to CS. Not that I have any GS in the making anyway. Got a 50/50 GM from the GLH, which I spent in Genghis' land for 1100 :gold:. Thought that would last a veeery long time, but once those cities came online they became very expensive. Need more courthouses, as it's -100:gold: per turn right now.
