BOTM 27 First Spoiler

Goal: Either conquest or domination

Plan:
a) If a neighbour is near and chariots are soon enough online try to take him out.
b) Else grap peacefully as much land as possible, tech to rifling and start the conquest.

Settled on dye.
Research: Hunting, Mining, BW, AH, Writing, Mysticism, Poly, Priest, Pottery, ...

Decided to go for Plan "b" and rex'ed like crazy. Got 1120BC Oracle and took Code of Law. First building in every city was a courthouse (chopped). So I was able to claim a large chunk of land (30%) without getting bankrupt.

125 AD Stole currency from Peter.
200 AD GLib

500 AD: 10 cities, still space for at least 3 cities. Life is good ... but I fear to get dow'ed. The small coperal is pleased (Buddhist), Mao is cautious (Hindu) and Peter is annoyed (Jewish) and I'm his worst enemy. :(
No war between the other guys and my favorite civ leader fears those aggressive guys.

The WHEOOHRN mode is easily discovered in BUFFY as the little angry fist on the scoreboard next to the relevant leader. No need to enter diplomacy mode :)

@Duckweed - the other guys may have declared on you in an attempt to dogpile if you were still at war with Peter.

I'm pretty sure the DOW from Mao was a full war. The DOW from Nappy also looked like a full war, he started entering the WHEOOHRN after I ended the war with Mao and Peter and stayed for more than 10 turns before DOW. Only the 2nd attempted DOW (which was delayed by my demand :D) looked like dogpile.

Very impressive screenshot Duckweed!
Can you give some more details how you managed to avoid a bankrupt claiming so much land and paying the upkeep for your amry?
Thanks!

In short, Cottages + CoL + Currency.

There are some differences from your play.

1. Researched pottery right after AH and BW, so I could start to lay down cottages very early.
2. Settled the eastern 2 gem site (3rd) and the gold/Ivory site (4th) very early ( in ~2000BC, you did not settle this site until 500AD, one more citizen in every city is big.), with a little help from Peter's workers. Early commercial and happy resources are very important.

Game wise I was disappointed on this very doctored map. It should had 2 food resources at capital. I settle in place, thinking I will exchange hidden dear/something on gold. But no, capital had only 1 food resource. There should have been one more food resource.

Well, if having more than one food resource was so critical to your strategy, you should not have been prepared to gamble on its existence. Gold is such a monstrously good resource that even gold+deer makes for an adequate capital. It's certainly not huge, but if you were prepared to invest a few turns to be sure of more food with that gold, there were such spots to be found.

Execly, map was doctored. In usually generated map of this type there often streches of land with out many food resources, with food resources concentrated in some space and near capital sided. Even on this map, additional food avalible only in one direction, so anyone who does not move there warrior that way going to be in huge disadvantage. It is simply badly designed map.

This arboria map type has heaps of food. Deer is food. There's food to be found for future cities all directions from the start location, except for a potential river site about 4 SE from the settler start location. If your side cities didn't have food, it's because you didn't plan for it.

Your capital might have been short of food if you laboured under the assumption that there would always be plenty of food near a capital. Having founded a capital and found it to be food-poor, you should have adapted your strategy to cope with that. Instead of many cottages and Oxford, plan on mines, farms, workshops and a wonderfest. Or, move the palace elsewhere and leave your first city as a random production city.

I think the starting location showed good map design. There was play for those who settled in place, some plausible avenues for settler-walking, some good sites to be found several moves away. That makes for interesting decisions and good differentiation on the scoreboard.

Nah, when difference in move of warrior on turn one let person expechange 1 food site on 4 food +1 gold site - not a good map design in any way.

I must admit that I was a bit jealous when I saw the placement of Duckweed's capital. ;)

Same here...
I actually moved my palace during the game, after settling on the dye. It became a decent production/commerce city.

You had to double move the warrior S-W to spot the food resources. Well, I went N-W, I think.
Other things for a strong start included scouting early the 3 gems area to the east, and the adjacent gold. Barbarian bears would not let me to...

Still, even without benefitting from all the brokeness the map could offer, settling some strong cities was very doable. I can't believe Duckweed's awesome game is only the result of his capital's placement. Although it must contribute, skill is probably involved somewhere...

I consider 1 Food + 1 Gold >> 2 Food, simplely because that gold mine alone almost double your research in early stage. As a result, you can have your UU out to explore and start to chop and cottage much earlier. Once you have this in mind, there's no reason to move warrior NW.

There are many other factors that affect the game result more than the site of the capital. I just name a few, such as tech path (did you consider AH before BW, and Pottery before Writing and Priest?), City settling order and placement, and AI's DOW decision, which is the biggest factor in the game. This is almost just a lucky factor sometime no matter how well you handle the diplomacy. If you did not get any DOW in this map, then IMO you are really lucky. Without the 5 strength UU, the result of my war with Mao could be much different. Swallowing 2 DOWs in BC era is not a good feeling.

:) That's for sure! Playing the game that way is much much more than having plenty of food in the capital!

I heard some rumors that Duckweed is one of those players whom the Deity AI really fears. Even guys like Monty, Shaka or Rangnar - and these guys are not known as cowards.
