Settled in place, built settler, then a worker in each city. Having two cities and two workers as of 3000 BC is very different from what I'm used to. Then chopped like a madman into archers and Stonehenge (2575 BC) and captured Kyoto (2000 BC).
Settled my fourth city (with my second settler) NE of Kyoto 1875 BC, and fifth city 1775 BC at the copper site further east (truly magnificent site!).
After that, I defeated Tokugawa (675 BC), Aztecs (340 AD), Elizabeth (490 AD), and HC is down to one city.
As you can see, I was not very quick with killing of the enemy, but I was not in a hurry. My main focus was to get Optics (running Representation and Caste) and preparing for the final war against the far-away-baddies.
I noted one thing that surprised me: the low happiness cap! Happy cap at pop 4 on Noble?!?!

Contender save. I decided to see what was possible with the land allotted to Joao and started with a peaceful (chop-fueled) expansion with cheap settlers. Built first three cities on plains hill to W (Lisbon), mouth of river to E (Oporto) and the marble/fish/fur site to S (Guimaraes). Lots of mining / further chopping / whipping helped produce a nice symmetry of GL in capital, SH/Oracle (for MW) in Oporto and Pyramids in Guimaraes. I decided to expand peacefully into the NW archipelago, producing a Science city on the stone island, a high-pop monster in the 3-food SW island and a toehold on the mainland above Oporto (on a coastal hill) to secure iron. I took Theology from my first GP, only to find that it had already been discovered by Elizabeth (to found Buddhism I think??? .Drat this any religion option!).At 500AD I am clear leader in score, my tech rate is competitive and my neighbours show no overt hostility. Elizabeth is weak but the only useful tech-trading partner, HC annoyed but distant and Toku/Monty backward.
