As many of you know 2k let some anti-American comments by employees slip onto their new civ 5 website. That writing was originally part of the civilopedia and while it has been removed from the website it is apparently being consider "color" or "character" for the civilopedia and will be included in the game.

While the PR train has come to town on this for the most part..I'd like to ask why we should let them off the hook. All they did is remove their hate from pre-release advertisement. Its still going to be in the game. If you take these people to a bar and lull them into a false sense of security the ugly monster inside them is still there and will come out. Employees of 2k seem to have a very low opinion of a big chunk of their customers (Americans). And its not an "oh lets help these poor people" opinion its a "na-na-na-na we rule you drool" type opinion. Which isnt any surprise to me given the way we've been patronized and lied to by 2K employees about the Steam issue.

I propose a boycott of Civ 5 until the hate speech has been COMPLETELY removed from the game and the employee responsible is identified and forced to write a public letter of apology. This is just another example of big arrogant corporations taking we, the customers, for granted and I say why just let them off with not even a slap of the wrist.

While I personally appreciate hate speech against the US (;)) I'd rather read an example before I boycott Civ 5.

He is referring to the info section of Ottomans on the ciV site saying that Americans knew little about the Ottoman Empire. I think they have changed it now, if you don't believe me check

They had some idiotic drivel written by some moron employee who thought it was funny.

The PR people were alerted to it, and removed it.

Time to move on, evrett.

What exactly is this "hate speech" ?

It's one thing to be smug, flippant, or dismissive. There's a massive differnce between something a person, such as yourself, might be offended by, and true hate speech.

Both in the United States, and especially in many European countries, there are legal definitions of "Hate Speech" as well. Hate Speech does more than suggest someone's ignorance; hate speech encourages racisim, violence, oppression, or something to that effect.

Without a true quote, or something to that effect, your post is reactionary and I dislike it. And I'm an American.

It wasn't hatespeech, more like sarcasm.

You're the only superpower left, what are you affraid of

yea, I read it before they pulled it. It wasn't hate speech to your definition Nicolas, but irresponsible for sure.

OMG! Did they really say that Americans know very little about Ottoman Empire!?

If that is not a hate speech i dont know what is!

Or..

..Perhaps evrett37 just knows very little about sarcasm, it pretty much looks like he has a blind spot right there. Ups did i just made a hate speech myself?

Its only been removed from the website for pre-release PR purposes..the comments remain in the game and have not been removed.

The Anti-American comments are being kept in the Civilopedia. The boycott stands for removing them from the game(civilopedia) and for accountability for whomever wrote it.

Well, I find your post to be trolling, and I'd ask the moderators to delete it. I'm super-excited for Civ5 and I'm uninterested in having to see bocott requests and pointless "hate Speech" threads in the forum.

Throwing around the word hate speech, is not a laughing matter. You don't call someone a rapist merely because they slept with your sister and then never called her again; you call them a jerk, but not a rapist.

I didnt see any mention of you actually reading the anti-american slander. Did you read it?

I agree with Nicolas10. This is the stupidest reaction possible to some sarcastic comments based in all too sad truth about the incompleteness of the average American student. I am now convinced that there is nothing of accuracy or interest that could possible come from evrett37 without emotional and political poison. So I get to explore the "ignore" function of this forum for the first time. Evrett37 seems to revel in representing the opposite of what I come to Civ Fanatics for.

First of all, no I did not. Secondly, unless you say that it advocates something truly hateful, i.e. racism, violence, etc. Then it wasn't hate speech.

If it said that Americans have no clue about Ottomans because Americans are the dumbest people in the world, then that's not hate speech.

If you want to post on this, you should have used a different approach. Like, 'hey, I'm bothered by...' or 'why is there this quote? I find it offensive, as an American, and I'm disappointed by it...'

You don't take a bullhorn and start throwing around hate speech references. I mean, I'm currently watching the World Cup in post-apartheid South Africa. I have no interest in having a computer game be linked to hate speech; there are enough real life examples of hate speech to hold us over, are there not?

I personally hate all hate speeches! I hate those hate speeches so much that i wish that somebody would make a hate speech out of hate speeches! Oh wait a minute.. Wouldnt that hate speech made out of a hate speech also be just a hate speech wich i hate?

OMG did i just made a hate speech out of a hate speech myself!? I hate when this happens!

\ all too sad truth about the incompleteness of the average American student.

I find this offensive and untrue. You are negatively generalizing a persons scholastic worth based on place of birth or residence. That is hate speech directed toward American students.

Its a perfect example why we need to boycott this behavior.

Hate speech is hate speech whether its a small insult or promoting wiping out a people. A game company has no business generalizing on the geographical knowledge of of a certain group of people. I'm American. I find it offensive and unnecessary. That should be enough. 2k has responded to the many complaints by leaving it in game but removing it form the website. That is why we need a boycott...asking nicely didnt work.

You do know that most Americans have problems of finding the US on a world map? Also the fact that Americans easily confuse Europe with Australia on maps show that Americans have severe problems when it comes to geography and history outside the USA.

That's true but A. so do most other countries. B. The sane people left here are trying to fix that. C. Most Americans are not really interested in where other countries are unless there's a war on.

"I keep hearing about Russian tanks in Georgia, but I live in Georgia and I haven't seen any."
