BtS d2d crashes on startup

:hmm:
my problem is that usually I would now start playing around with the installation before proposing any new stuff to try. Since I don't own D2D stuff I cannot do that though  so I fear I am (still) stumped. This sounds like a corrupted installation - and a complete reinstall should fix it. But for a complete reinstall you'd need to know what files and registry keys this game leaves behind on uninstall (and it does leave stuff behind - all programs do to some extent). Unfortunately the registry keys are different on each version (i.e. D2D has different ones from Steam and different ones from the retail version etc.) so I don't know exactly what to do. I hope someone else knows more about D2D :dunno:

At this point, I'm using Civ4 obtained through TryMedia and BtS that's store-bought. After a considerable hassle, I got Civ4 patched up to 1.74.

Did those latest logs tell you anything? Is there any way you could send me a list of what all is supposed to be within the Beyond the Sword/Assets/Art directory? Maybe then you could zip up whatever is missing for me?

Civ4 was obtained through trymedia/EBgames and installed first; it is patched to 1.74.
Beyond the Sword is no longer d2d but a storebought version. It is patched to version 3.1.3.1.

I didn't uninstall civ4 when I installed the new BtS. Should I try that? Let me see if I can reobtain the download files for Civ4; since I had so many problems with it, I may have hit the download limit.

I can get into the program. BtS crashed this game while I was scrolling through the leaders to choose from under Play Now. Here are the logs from that.

ok that is more helpful:

RESMGR: Failed loading file art/LeaderHeads/Bismarck/bismarck_bg.kfm. Error message: A file I/O error occurred.

an I/O error basically says that it cannot find the file where it is looking for it - in your case it is extremely likely that the windows registry got screwed up by the various installations (it can be a damaged disk as well).
I would
1) uninstall the games
2) use a reliable registry cleaner - I recomment ccleaner - and make sure to backup the registry before using that
3) reinstall

ok - As soon as trymedia teels me I'm safe uninstalling Civ4, I will give that a shot. Earlier, I had a problem with BtS being unable to recognize the version of Civ because trymedia's version was listed in the registry as 1.74.0000 instead of 1.74 or whatever. So I know to fix that right off the bat after I reinstall Civ4. Other than that... do you recommend I fully patch Civ4 before reinstalling BtS, or should I install both, then try to patch them?

definitely patch to 1.74 first - and make sure that BtS can see it (set it to 1.74).
BtS tries to install 1.74 during installation if Civ4 is not patched and with the digital distribution being a mess will more likely than not produce more problems.

Alright. Uninstalled everything. Reinstalled everything. And we are back to where we were before: Beyond the Sword fails on startup right after the screen resolution changes and the screen goes black. Resmgr log says it can't open TerrainLight.nif. I will attach new log files. BtS said it created a .dmp file, but I can't find it; it gave me a non-existent directory where it put it.

I am patching BtS now, up to 3.17, but that hasn't changed anything in the past.

Yup. Only one active account on the machine, and that's the owner account. It can't open the file because it's not there.

No errors there.

I've found three places where there are Assets/Art/Terrain/ directories, and none of them have a subdirectory that says "lights". I don't even know which one of these it's looking under.

I found TerrainLight.nif under Mods/Afterworld/Assets/Art/Terrain/Lights

Like before, I could copy that folder over, but all that seems to accomplish is get me to the next point where I'm missing files.

Well... both d2d and storebought BtS have done this, and I have no idea why. Any suggestions of what to do at this point? Any way to figure out what all I am missing and acquire them?

I guess at this point I'm just supposed to give up. Do you guys regard 2kgames support at all? I thought this would be the best place to come to.
