BTS - HOF Rules - Game Options Discussion

I would say that all the options would be alright, except maybe Random Events should be player's choice, although it's not that big of a deal to me.

Another somewhat related issue is the new map types. Some of them look pretty standard (Hemispheres, Big and Small) but others may be a little overpowered (Arboria comes to mind). Any word on which may be excluded?

We're currently playing, I mean testing it right now.

Unrestricted leaders is way too crazy. (60 hammer Rathaus :crazyeye: )
The AI seems to be a little less functional as well when these are enabled.

On the other side however, these would really squeeze the last bit out of the scores.

I'm hesitant to allow random events. One of the random events I receive stated that all my axemen would automatically earn a free shock promotion at that time. This could be very game breaking, especially if someone is building up an axe rush. I haven't received many events, but than again, I keep restarting games to try new things. ;)

Sorta like an SGL for civ 3 then? Gamebreaking in the sense that the right random event early will make a huge difference, and that some players will restart over and over until they get that event to happen. But it will only matter for certain types of games, and it's not that much different to what it was earlier, that some types of game pretty much required one way to play. i.e. Rome/Inca Praet/Quecha rush. Or how it was for civ3, that most 20k slots required you to get an early SGL. I don't think either of those severely unbalanced things, I don't think random events will either.

If it was optional, I believe those players going for the best time/score would more than likely have them turned off, as it is too much of a risk to their game.

Probably. Personally, once there is a BTS mod for the HOF, I'll play all my games using that. I'm still learning to play again, and will be playing games and submitting the hopefully decent results, rather than trying to optimise everything to get a particular #1 score. So far I'm finding the random events fun to have, so I'd rather I still have the option to play with them on, especially as they are not hugely unbalancing like unrestricted leaders would be.

tech brokering is when the ai gets your tech from a trade and then imideatly gifts it to the other ai. why do you think that whenever you traded the ai a tech on their turn, that when it was your turn, everybody had your tech. i say this should be checked so the ai doesnt continue doing this.

I'm with you. Makes the game more interesting in my opinion. Maybe make it optional?

Am I reading that culture one correctly? Immediate Legendary status? That's overpowered (I really hope I'm not reading that correctly).

You are reading it wrong ;) but you can get a free settled great artist which is quite nice but not a free Legendary city...

Whew, that scared me for a second. What does 100% culture mean then?
That is tricky - the text displayed suggests you get a +100% culture production in a city which would be huge. The code however seems (I am currently too tired to say for sure ;)) to show that you get +100% culture on the city's plot, i.e. it seems to double the current cultural influence on that plot. I am however not sure if it pertains only to the who owns this plot function or also to the actual culture level...

So just to be sure, it doesn't have anything to do with 100% cultural defense (which is why I assumed Legendary).

No - I *think* it just sets cultural ownership to 100% - but there is a chance that I do not understand the setCulture routine correctly and that it actually doubles the amount of culture already present - which could be huge for an advanced city and negligible for a city just founded...

i think it is better to just leave random event optional. It can be both beneficial or harmful, and if ppl think they can take the risk, they can choose to check it in their games. Also, some ppl like an element of suprise, while others dont, so we shouldnt force every1 to check/uncheck this option.

I was disappointed too as events add some flavor, but some of the reported events, like the culture one, seem a little unbalanced. We really don't want a repeat of the SGL tactics from Civ3, where people have to get a SGL by a certain point in order to compete.

As superslug said, it is easier to start out a little more restricted and then loosen the rules than then to tighten them later after submission have been accepted.

What we are thinking is we will review the events and remove any that seem too unbalanced before we allow it to be either 'must be unchecked' or 'player option' in the future.

Please try to replace the events you take out with new, less unbalancing ones

After playing 1 complete game my other thought is to reduce the frequency of random events as some of them seem to repeat too often.

I think it's a good call just excluding a few game-making events. My copy of BTS hasn't arrived yet (so it isn't *my* fault that the HoF server is down, sniff) but I read the thread linked up here by Methos and the events sounded fun, so it would be neat to be able to include most of them.

I didn't compete in the Civ3 HoF so I'm not sure what an "SGL" would be, but it would be tedious in the extreme to have to get a specific event to achieve a respectable date.
