Well, in Warlords spearmen don't require BW (as was discussed earlier 
), but in BtS, the Holkan UU in fact does

Am i reading this correctly that Ziggaruts in BTS require only priesthood to build, thus very early cheaper courthouses?

[EDIT] One good reason for disallowing freely chooseable traits (mixing and matching a civ with a leader with other traits than default), is the fact that running Sumeria as an Organized leader (their default leader is Creative, Protective) will be majorly overpowered. You would be able to expand as fast as your axes/settlers can run

You would be able to expand as fast as your axes/settlers can run
Awesome!!! Reflects the summerians being the first civilization. I agree about mixing leaders to other civs, just doesn't seam right to me.

I'm playing a test game with Boudica in which I'm trying to win a Diplo win with the Apostolic Palace.
Charismatic is still huge
It allowed me to absorb Ramses' empire in a mere 12 turns. I've spread the faith he founded to take advantadge of the shiny shrine he built in Thebes instead of trying to spread the faith we founded. All the continent is converted as Isolated Pacal went Religion crazy and founded the other 5.
However, Ragnar is still a thorn in the side. Even at +8 relations with everyone else he keeps backstabing everyone. I'm wishing there was a 'Declare Ragnar Heretic and wipe him out of the face of Earth' proposition at the Apostolic Palace.
That being said. Prepare to fight some epic wars. Both offensive and defensive. The huge stacks the AI manages to create even at Prince level make me cringe to think how awesome higher levels will be.
Espionage is huge and will become a major part of the game.
Oh and playing with no tech brokering enabled the tech pace looks awesomely slow (Except for Pacal who is almost on par with me despite starting isolated!).

Now I'm even more confused about how to open with these guys. I'll have to figure out something though because I'm really looking forward to fin-exp being back.
Re: Better AI: I've consistently heard that the tech pace is slower. That to me is another indication of going more with a CE, especially monarch and below. On monarch already I wish the AI teched a bit faster when I go FE/SE for trading opportunities. I just have to do too much self research and, to me--unless I have pyramids--self-research means CE.
I'm very nervous about the huge stacks I keep hearing about THAT makes me think FE/SE just to be able to whip/draft to keep up with these guys.
If I see Monty and/or Shaka and can't wip them out very early then I will do whatever they want, starting with gifting them alphabet on the turn I discover it after a beeline, whenever they want. I will be their best friend forever.

Financial expansive is a great combo - especially with the UB. And who doesn't want to beeline construction anyway
I like a builders opening with early construction for these guys.
- Ag/Wheel/Pottery - early cottages for financial.
- hunting/bronze - should easily be reached before barbs come. Then whip a holkan and your defensive needs are covered - they are great anti barb units.
The big plus for me with these units are that you don't need to settle the copper. You have a safe predictable path to barbarian defense in your first five techs. And the last techs come double speed with the cottages up. You can afford to gamble on getting your cottages going early - which with a lot of other leaders would risk suicide if you didn't find copper.
They do a great job of killing barbarian archers - ignore first strikes and get terrain defense.

I agree Invisible. There seem to be two types of people: those who value a weaker unit that requires no resource, and those who scoff at such units advising one to simply settle the copper.
I fall in the former category. To me, having a decent unit that requires no resource opens up more possibilities for early-game expansion. If your starting strat is wedded to having copper in your first 2 cities, that makes for a pretty cookie-cutter gaming experience.

A bit off-topic, but this free civ and leader matching thing is a bit meh for me
. I would have gone the other way round and made it so that each leader can pick any two (or even three, for that matter) traits.
It would be just stupid to see Elizabeth rule Japanese, but who can really assert that Tokugawa did not have a certain Philo/Fin touch to his personality?

I am playing my third game as the Dutch, the first two were just "try anything and don't about the consequences".
In this game, I started inland, but founded a coastal city and build The Colossus and the Great Light House there. Those would significly improve my financial situation throughout the game. In my capital I build the Great Library, and in another city I used that new religious wonder to switch to Free Religion real early to avoid the wrath of Isabella and boost research. Eventually I did conquered Isabella and Catherine and beelined to Steam Power to rush dikes in practically all my cities. While production exploded, I used Privateers to destroy fishing nets and gain blockade money of all my enemies. I founded Sid's Sushi Co. to improve the food of my inland production cities and grow them even further. I am now contemplating about whether I'm also going to conquer Sumeria before I launch my Spaceship.

I am really torn about Pacal. I want to go with a Specialist economy; cheap workers, +Expansive Health Bonus + Ball Court just screams SE, but then Financial feels left out and underused...
The easiest way to reconcile is too try a Hybrid economy, but thats too difficult and requires too much micro-managing for my tastes.
The Portuguese I am pretty excited about. They should be set up very nicely to abuse the new colonies feature with their UU and Imperialistic. Thats going to be fun having large colonies all across the map paying tribute too you.

How are you possibly torn on Pacal??? CE all the way. How are cheap workers and more health and happines more of a help to specialist economy than to a cottage one. Larger cities + more workers = more cottages.

I disagree - you could say the same thing about science, or culture, and equally you would be wrong (or at least it would be a gross oversimplification).
In fact with Inflation kicking in, and the fact that you have Intelligence Agency, Security Bureau and previously underused Jails and Castles that heavily influence the espionnage output of a city (and building all of them in each of your commerce-generating cities would require a lot of resources) you are probably better off assigning spy specialists.

I had Pacal run over my border cities with a stack of 8 catapults and a total 12 of axemen, holkan and swordsmen. The scary thing now is that the AI knows how to sacrifice catapults to soften city defenses.
