I play as a defensive builder. I generally only go to war once I get industrial units unless someone else starts it or is land grabbing.
I play on either large or huge maps with a preference towards continents.
I'll build as many cities as I can fit in my territory without more than a few tiles overlap. I'll typically end up with 8-10 cities total.
I only build 1 defensive unit in each city and then a worker, then a settler and then i build improvements.
I generally only build wonders in my first 2 or 3 cities and manage to get almost all the wonder in the world.
I'll generally leave my cities on their own in terms of citizens unless theirs a problem (starvation, unhappiness, etc.)
I did great at higher difficulty levels in previous games (Civ II & III, SMAC) so I was suprised when it took me past 2020 to build the starship. So I tried playing on Settler but I don't seem to be having any better luck. I'm not getting to the industrial age until at least the late 1700 or early 1800 hundreds.

Can anyone give me any pointers? Thanks.

What level are you playing at with these settings?

Edit. sorry I just saw Settler.

If you're peacefully building then cottage spam should give you a tech rate above the AI.

If you'r wonder building you will have the pyramids. Mid- late game try rush buying all the gold buildings, market, bank etc... This boosts your tech rate.

As everyone said, lots of cottages, with the appropriate science buildings in the really commerce-rich cities. The more money you're making, the higher science rate you can run, so build markets and banks and things in commerce-rich cities too.
Also, set aside one city with lots of food (a couple of special food resources) and have it running (prefereably scientist) specialists. Build the National Epic there and try and get the Great Library there too. You'll produce quite a lot of Great Scientists, who can either build academies to further your research, or lightbulb and instantly put a lot of research towards a technology.

Obviously Cottages and beeline to key Commerce multiplying techs, Currency for the extra trade route, Civil Service for that key civic, Liberalism for Free Speech and Free Religion, Democracy for emancipation, Printing Press... etc.

Try Producing an early GS by building a Library and assigning 2 Scientist Specialist then use that GS to build an Academy in your Capital for that early 50% boost to science.

Try using traits focused on commerce, Financial is an obvious one.

Interesting. I put the Great Library in my science city rather than in my great person farm. Partly this is because I want to start construction early - often before I have established by GP farm. Probably at settler, timing is not a big issue, but at higher levels, wonders are more difficult. The other reason for building it in my science city is to get the combination with Oxford. As a result I get up to 4 scientists in my science city which helps churn out the Great Scientists. My GP farm takes over after building Oxford when I switch to Caste System. This means that construction of the National Epic is not urgent and can be made to fit with all the other things in the build queue.

I can see the benefit from combining the Great Library with the National Epic, so perhaps I should doing it that way round.

I usually put the library (if i nab it) in my best commerce city which I run as my main science city.

I put national epic and now with BtS If I can save forests I'll throw the .... forest thing in the other one ;)
