I am not 100% sure, but I think you will get a crash to desktop in Modern era with Ethnic units mod, but do not dispair, there (probably) is a cure!
The latest versions of the CBP rename some Modern era units such as Great War Infantry -> Riflemen. I think when Ethnic Units mod tries to apply the new skin on a unit which has been renamed (= does not exist under the original name), it cannot find the unit in the database and crashes the game without warning.
I had a sudden crash in my game in the Modern era some time ago I could not get by, which I thought was caused by a conflict between some of the many mods (probably 30+ including the Ethnic Units) I was using together with CBP. Therefore I did not even report it. But then I read Gazebo's release notes for a new version of CBP and it struck me the crash might have been caused by the renamed units (I did not have the saves anymore unfortunately). So I tried to start a new game with CBP+CP+CSD+Ethnic Units only in Modern era and the game crashed within the couple of first turns when probably AI tried to purchase/upgrade one of the renamed infantry units of the era.
Then I went to Balance Changes/Units/UnitChanges.sql in CPB and deleted the unit name changes:
Then I started a new game with the same setup in Modern era, played for several turns and no crash occured, so I 90% believe the renamed units were causing the crashes in my games before. Unfortunately I suddenly became very busy with my work again, so I did not have a chance to try out a full-scale game, so I still could be wrong - in this case I apologize if I confused anyone.
I suggest you try to play the game
as it is and keep autosaving frequently first and if you encounter a crash you can try deleting the above code and reload - I think the saves should work even if you delete the above lines. I am probably 2 versions behind and it seems more units have been renamed in the newest versions, so you might need to do some more deleting. You do not need to delete lines renaming units which are not touched by the Ethnic Units mod.
Now that I think of it I hope it will not break the later game as there might be more dependencies on the renamed units from other CBP files relating to promotions, further upgrades etc. More elegant solution would be to rename the units in the Ethnic Units mod, but the unit names are repeated for every civilization in separate files unit by unit, so you would need to run some sort of an automated Search and replace routine on all the files in question as doing it manually would be a nightmare ... actualy I will probably try to do that when I have more time.
Would anyone of you guys playing with the Ethnic Units confirm the above?
