bugfixes in expansions

New to Civ4 BTS and Civ5. I noticed with Civ4 that I needed the expansions in order to fix the interface and a lot of bugs to keep it playable on modern systems.

With Civ5, will I need to purchase the expansions to get the latest bug fixes, or has Firaxis been updating the base game as much as possible?

Civ5 vanilla is patched quite often. The expansions only add concepts. They are not needed.
