Don't want to pay for windows?

What should that have to do with buying a new computer.

I recommend a GeForce 2 video card and LOT'S OF RAM!!!! It's so cheap. If you want performance, get an AMD Motherboard and a Thunderbird processor at 1200 MHz coupled with DDR RAM.
If your on a budget, get AMD Motherboard with a Duron 800 MHz or higher chip. And SDRAM at PC133 MHz.
I'm not fond of Intel chips and I HATE RDRAM!!! AVOID RDRAM!!!!

Sound??? Probably a Sound Blaster Live card. SB Live Value if on a budget...SB Live Gamer or SB Live 512 if you have money to blow. I would avoid Turtle Beach cards. While they perform well, they are a ***** to install!!!!

These are just the core components....if you need more advise....just post.

You sure about this? I just think that if you have to ask what parts you should put in, you better not start building one yourself. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to offend you by saying you're not good enough or something....

<FONT face="tahoma">How much money do you have? This will affect what I tell you are good parts for you to buy. But I will try for now without knowing this information.

Sound Sound Blaster Live! $47-176
Video GeForce2 MX or GF3 $64-369
Hard Drive Western Digital/IBM $94-222
MoBo w/processor Various w/D750-900 $115-211
Just some suggestions. If you want to overclock your system, you probably don't want to go with just any Mobo. Get yourself a nice one like Abit's KT7A-RAID, but be ready to spend $150+ on the motherboard alone for a nice one.

Pfff, Geforce 2Mx...pff. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Hem. If your budget for your graph card is low, prefer a Kyro II instead. It's cheaper, and as powerful as a Geforce 2 GTS, the only thing is it hasn't T&L module but it's antialiasing is very good. And in 32 bits or 16 bits, it's the same performances thanks to its Tile rendering technology. Another thing. Drivers are still bugged. But that should improve. Otherwise try the Radeon, for it also has excellent DVD and MPEG hardware uncompression engine (rage theater)

Or if you feel horny, a G4-733 bi-proc. That should rock. With a built-in apple superdrive

Hey, I'm also building my own computer.
Me got a few questions as well.

1. I might get my processer sent over from US to save a bunch of money, but will customs **** it up?

2. I'm confused with the Vid Card situation at the moment, I understand this, you ONLY get NVidia at the moment? HAHAHA! DIE 3DFX!!!.
What FSB is is the GF3 and the GF2s running at? (**** getting that super fast RDRAM or DDRRAM, im going for good ol' SDRAM)

HOldon, im confusing my self again.
So i'll Be getting some 256mg SDRAM PC133, right. ANfd i want to get everything else at PC133.
SO i'll be getting some sorta MOBO, (haven't thought about it yet)
HOLDON!!!! WHY THE **** ARE P3S SO MUCH MORE THJAT ****IJNG THUNDERBIRDS!!! ****ING INTEL BARSTARDS.
a Thunderbird 1.3ghz 200 FSB.

What speed HD? is it just a waste of money to get a 15krpm?
A SBlive Platnium

So my basic questoins.
1.What HDD?
2. Why are P3s ****ing expensive/
3. What vidcard do i get?
(oh yeah, i want one with the built in decoder/capture/tv in out, and all the rest.)

yeah, thankyall

<FONT face="tahoma">Scorch, you too haven't said how much money you have to spend. Although you are talking about 15k rpm HDD (which only come in SCSI type) so I am guessing you might have a lot of money to spend, or didn't know they were only SCSI.

animepornstar, where did you dissapear to? Did you get your system?

well, i don´t kno how much i can afford this autumn because i´ll move to another city to study. i´ll problary buy a amd thunderbird, soltek motherboard, asus gf2, sd or dd ram... but all depend on how much money i´ll have. the dollar is expensive in sweden right know, so i hope computer parts will get cheaper when/if the dollar get cheaper.

however, i´ll get a 10mbit/s connection to the school server and t3 broadband.

yo. K i don't know to much about HDDs ok.

anyway, my budget aint too big, what i want is a computer for playing my tonnes of music, playing Civ3 and going on the net and a generally fast maching. P3-550 is WAYYY too slow.

Um yeah, so i don't know noffing about HDDS suggest one for me?

I don't wanna be spending overly heaps, just whats needed.

You can go to gamespot where they have a great topic called the ultimate gamer's machine, which is regularly updated and basically is made of the best components on the market with in depth analysis. Gives you a good reference for comparison.
If you want a cd writer get the LG 12/8/32. I bought one and it's cheaper than plextor though it's as good.
See also zdnet.com for hdd comparison analysis.

Good luck.
Mounting one's own computer isn't as complicated as it used to be.

Ni !

Well, why do you need an expensive graphics card? why bother with more than 16 MB of RAM? Civilization will run on 8 MB RAM and a simple video card

Unless the system requirements for Civ3 will be very high.

I know!!! I just bought 256 MB for $42 American. And that was one of the highest priced ones!!! The $33, $35, $38, and $40 RAM was out of stock.
