Building city walls

Its pretty nice when youre defending. Make a wall instead of another unit is sometimes the turning point.

We can build monuments and windmills so why not walls.

If a city is damaged well into the red you should be at the “house to house” fighting stage of a siege.

How the flipping frack are workers stacking bricks in full view of the assaulting army?

They probably take example from other civilian citizens aka pops, who keep calm and carry on productively working the tiles around the city centre which have enemy troops occupying them, by simply ignoring the enemy, I guess. You must just believe that all that enemy army is fake news and it all will be fine ;)

It is nice, tho, when you are the one who pulls out the walls out of nowhere. When AI does that, much less fun I agree. But as long as both sides can do it, it’s well balanced :)

I hadn't thought of this before, but now am in full agreement.
If a city is being attacked, just like how district buildings work, it shouldn't be allowed to build walls concurrently.
Easy fix -
Enemy unit next to city center : halt wall production.

I would suggest that in a future release, the level of production in a city should be tied to its health (e.g. at 50% health it has 50% of normal production). Either that or limit production to only units and repairs once the city gets below a certain percentage (i.e. goes into the red).

You could give certain civs a bonus free melee unit when a city drops into the red. Russia and Germany should be at the top of that list

Again, the same way they are building monuments, windmills and any other city center building. House to house fighting and builders stacking bricks in town square for a monument to got made...

Just walls get a louder outcry cause players got their attack haulted when they really wanted the city. Would this thread exist if the same city barely finished their monument in time for the attack?

It dont have to make sense. Its a game not real life simulator. Plenty doesnt make sense but people only evoke this rule for certain things they dont like.

If a city with enemy units in it's territory or next to the city centre couldn't build anything but units that would lead to some interesting guerrilla tactics. Would make the land stealth units a lot more interesting too.

So because mechanic B is garbage we should just accept that mechanics A and C are also stupid?

Being under siege should grey out all options except building military units.

This would go a LONG way towards balancing the current stupidity of the best defensive strategy being your field armies deliberatly abandoning cities and allowing ranged strikes and walls to attrit the invaders

It also shows why settled urbanized civs were often utterly undone by horse army invaders; it basically shuts down the entire economy if you just turtle behind walls

Then the trades routes should also stop working for a city under siege.

Yes, yes they should

Being under siege should immediatly put your city into desperation mode. It should have lots of horrible consequences that make you want to avoid it, even if it means having to fight at a disadvantage with your field units

Conversely if your opponent turtles, you should be able to basically shut down their economy

Finally, this gives coastal cities with a harbour a much needes buff, as you need both a land army superiority and a naval superiority to siege it, as the Spartans found out at Athens, and Alexander at Tyre

This is also an AI buff; as flailing around being unable to take your city still hurts if it deletes the economy

It aint garbage. Its just not to your liking.

Like i said, this aint a real life sim so something that doesnt "make sense" isnt a garbage mechanic.

Whether walls should be allowed to construct during siege needs to take into consideration many things, not just rl "make sensibilty." How it effects the overall gameplay is just as important.

Players deserve a fighting chance to defend their cities. Players should be able to employ a counter to whatever you doing until the bitter end.

Part of playing a strategy game is making decisions on the fly. If i find it safe to attempt to squeeze in a city center building while you siege, i should be allowed that option. Decisions like this are what make a fun game.
