C3C Civilizations?

This sounds strange, but I'm thinking Israel's UU could be the Maccabees. You know, Judah and the like, who destroyed Antiochus' army with hit-and-run tactics. They would be archers of some kind, I'd assume, or perhaps slingers. Ancient Age for sure, or they could be those rebels (don't know the name, Zealots perhaps) who fought at Masada (sp?) against the Romans. When the Romans finally won, that's when they burned the Second Temple of Jerusalem.

@Pembroke, the costs shouldn't be reduced, because the Israelits were so few in number and strength (think of David vs. Goliath). They should have a very expensive unit, yet a very good one that might have the strength to stand up to the Roman legion, the Greek phalanx, or the Persion immortal. Heck, they even stopped this guy :egypt: but that would take a miracle...or perhaps a Moses :)

If I have to guess I think:

The Netherlands
Portugal
Polynesia
Israel

But the Aboriginals, the Inuit or an sub-saharan african civ would be welcome too.

My choices would be (based on Earth maps):

- Songhai (Mali)
- Nubia or Ethiopia
- Cambodians or Thais
- Malay (Indonesia / Malaysia)

Of course these are not the top markets...

But I am afraid (no offense meant to these countries) we will have more spots in already crowded areas, not that I mind them otherwise : Israel, Portugal or Netherlands : one is likely.

I definitely don't want Byzantines, Austria-Hungary, Canada, Brazil or Australia because they are not specific enough.

But because of the scenarios, if there is one about the Crusades we might have Byzantium. If there is a Napoleonian one or a WWI one we might have Austria, and for the middle Eastern one we might have Israel.

The posts so far seem to be a wish list. I'd venture that as per the name and basis, the civs will be chosen based on 3 distinct scenarios, as that's all it sounds like the expansion will be. As such, with Sumerians and Hittites already on the list to go with Babylon and/or Persia, I'd guess something else that fits the time lines and goegraphic areas. It would likely also have to be civs that were true empires or significant powers. So the Inuit are not a likely choice, although ancient Israel could be a possibility.

My guesses for scenarios and possibilities for civs would be:

Cradle of Civilization: ancient Israel, Phillistines, Caananites, Phoenecians, Ethiopia / Axum,

Meso-America: Olmec, Toltec, Anasazi,

Africa: Mali / Songhai, Asante / Dahomey, Shona, Kush / Nubia, Ethiopia / Axum

Far East: Angkor / Khmer

Why dont have byzanthines? after all, they became a very influencial empire on its time...an unique culture, and an interesting history, plus it will be a contrastic civilization for the turks......

and how about a more tribal/barbarian nation? lets say the huns.

of course, a point : there should be an latinamerican civ.

Thanks for speaking for me folks.

back on topic. Old Israel would be a welcome addition. This would fit in nicely with the Roman scenarions I am sure would be included.

Well, the Byzantines were technically just the Romans in the East...

Well done - you've dismissed a distinct culture and dominant empire that existed for over 1100 years with one roll of the eyes! Technicalities have nothing to do with it - Byzantium as "New Rome" ended less than 300 years after the founding of Constantinople. I suggest reading some history on the subject before making such asinine comments!

Anyways, the Byzantines would be a perfect addition - in fact, the only thing that will get me to buy this expansion is their inclusion. Kataphraktoi would be OK as the UU, but I'd rather see Varangian Guard because we have way too many cavalry-based medieval UU's, and replacement of Longbows is more or less correct as far as time period is concerned.

Can you think of stats for the Verangian guard?

(I hope I don't end up with a double post)

That was weird

My post appeared in the middle of the thread

It was a response to metalhead's post

Look for the Galic Swordsman, and you will find my post

I just want to see some more modren UUs, don't care what the country is. But I would prefer to see the Dutch added

one asian: siam or khmer or tibet
one african: mali or kongo
one oceanian: polynesia
one european: holland or portugal or the huns (with attila!)

please no more than one additional european and no more middle eastern!!

thanks for the support, metalhead....:)

something happenned....my older post just moved like if i create-it as new........

anyway..i think that indeed the byzanthines UU should be another than cataphract....there is one very good been made here already.......

also, i think it would be a nice detail if firaxis add an UU for each time or era....to make things a little more diferent......

On the topic of anti-semitism and whether Israel should be included in Civilization... there are very powerful commercial lobbies on either side of the argument, for and against including Israel as a civ. All other arguments aside, I think Israel will not be included because the outcry against including Israel might be too great. The fans of Civ seem to rank Israel low in terms of inclusion, below the Scottish and Dutch for example, though I don't see why: Judaism is the font of Christianity and Islam and Israel should be included as a civ for that reason alone, in my view... but I don't think that reason is important to marketers. Israel will probably not be avoided just to avoid contention from pro-Israeli groups upset at Israel's depiction in the game, and a (let's face it) large anti-semitic fan-base that is expected to buy Conquests.

Moderator Action: I'm leaving this post, because it is looking at the situation of including Israel in the game in a logical manner, not playing with stereotypes or bashing either side. --Padma

But, as you say, getting back on topic...

Byzantines would be cool, however, think of the world map. We already have the Ottomans, I'm afraid there just wouldn't be enough room. I still think its neat and should be put in. As for Israel not being put in, I think that's a fair assessment. Not modern Israel, maybe for political reasons (however, this is just a computer game) but also becaue its a young state. Its significance, though grand in the modern world, is nothing to earlier days of history. Ancient Israel, like the Kingdom of, and Judah, and Samaria, that's do-able. They are around the time from the Egyptians, to the Babylonians, to the Greeks, to the Romans. It plays a major role in the story of all those states, and thus should be included, since it is very important to history, probably as much as Babylonia. :)
