I researched literature the other day, and I didn't receive free tech for the first time. Do you have to be the first person to research it or what to receive the freebie?

This might not be the right thread to ask this question, so feel free to move it! I've looked at this thread and I've looked in the Strategies forum.

I'm trying the Intro1 Ancient Treasures conquest scenario. I've never used 'victory points' before, so I thought this was a good way to learn about that feature. BUT I've never come close to getting enough victory points to win in this scenario - any tips? (I've played about 6 times, on Chieftain level, since this is new to me!)

If there's already a thread discussing this, then please point me to it!

If there's not already a thread on this, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Meltone 1 there is a free tech for the first to learn philosophy not literature

I won that scenario pretty easily the first time I played it.
You have to concentrate on securing the VP locations with units,
you don't need to build a city. If you do this you should be able to secure more locations than the AI and ultimately win.

In that scenario, you need to station and keep units (Warriors, etc) on the Victory Point Locations. You gain VP's for each turn the location is occupied by one of your units. It doesn't have to be inside your territory.

Thanks - Must I have a unit stationed on the Victory Point location, or is having it within the borders of one of my cities enough? Or within my borders but with a road connecting it to a city?

Is there a thread somewhere about Victory Point Locations? The Forum Search is turned off, and the Civlopedia doesn't tell much!

edit:
(and thanks to Kring who answered my question, too!)

When I posted my question, I had about 15000 of the 30000 needed to win, with about 40 turns left. After seeing these replies, I posted units on every victory location that I thought I alrea had in my territory, and I won with 2 turns left in the game!

Of course, it meant staying up unti 3:00 am when my alarm is set for 7:00 am - I'm going into New York City to see 'Wonderful Town' for a matinee, and whatever I can get at the TKTS booth for a Saturday evening show <g>

Yes, I meant philosophy. I researched it the last 2 games and I didn't get a free tech! I have also used the rhye's terrain the last 2 games and I wonder if there is any connection.

Wait a minute, did you say that you HAVE to be the first to research it to get the bonus?

yeah, Birdjaguar said that.

General rules for getting a free tech:
-be the first civ on the whole planet that discovers philo; you can choose the free tech then
-be scientific and complete an era (techwise); you get then one of the next era 'starting' techs without choosing it (and unfortunately w/o further notice on that tech, but you can easily figure out yourself the tech you got;))
-build ToE, choose two free techs
-own TGL and not know education; get every tech for free that is already known by at least two contacted civs
-finally, hut-pop a tech: this works for ancient techs only. The free tech won't be the one your currently researching, so you can slightly steer the process. Exception: if you know already all ancient era techs but one that is needed to complete the ancient era, you can get it for free from a hut while your actually researching it.

I'd upload a save but the file is 175KB, and the boards won't let me...

At the bottom of the screen it says "upload file"

Go there upload your file and you just put the URL of the file and its there!

Lately I am sick of space race, diplomatic, and culture wins (played at Monarch Level) so in my current game, I turned them off so I could hopefully undertake a domination victory. Is it considered cheating to do this. One side of me feels like I should be trying to achieve domination beofre another Civ has the chance at space race or diplomatic wins. What say you experts??? Is part of the challenge with each victory condition to race against the other possible outcomes?

I frequently turn off space race when I play to force me and the AI to meet other conditions. Part of the fun is having the control to direct play at a macro level. I suggest that you play around with victory conditions alot and have a good time.

I havent bought Conquests yet, and I would like to ask, since people are talking a lot about it: is there any big change in the combat system that makes the game anyway different than the original CIV 3?

Can anyone confirm if the city limit has been increased and if so, what has it been increased to?

Whoa... I hit a key board combo that cleared my screen of all icons except the map and units. No mini map, no civpedia, no status box in the lower right. I don't know what I hit. Anybody know how to bring it all back? The game plays fine otherwise. Function keys all work. Thanks.

There are no significant changes to the combat system. The changes discussed in other threads where hypothetical changes that might have been added in a patch but were dropped. Buy Conquests, it really worth it.

No increase in city limit.

Possible key combinations:

Control Shift N or
Control Shift M or
Delete

The Delete one is probably the one you hit.

Thanks, I give them a try.

thanks vbraun, here's the link to the latest gamesave of mine where it doesn't work, for me at least:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/dosave.sav

Mr. Do, shift-u worked liked a charm for me, at least in the city of Chengdu.:)
The regular upgrade button (shortcut: u) was showing up/working as well.
Strangely, I could not access advisor screens with the F-keys... neither esc/enter worked for screen exit/confirmation...
:crazyeye:

side-note: the upload server knows very well the difference between upper/lower case letters ;)
So it's "dosave.SAV" instead of "dosave.sav" like
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/dosave.SAV
