watorrey:
I'm curious, do you have Civ3 Gold[COLOR] as Mistfit does?
Or do you have three separate discs as I have?
vanilla Civ3
Civ3 PTW
Civ3 Conquests

The reason I ask is any time I try to start from the Start\All Programs\ menu it asks for the specific disc.
Example: If I click on Civilization III -- it says "Please insert the Civilization III Disc".
If I Click on Civilization III Play The World -- it says "Please insert the Civilization III Play The World Disc".

This may be because I loaded each program separately. I don't know.

Mistfit:
Yes, you should be able to browse for the save file. However, I retract my statement of yesterday about starting Civ3 Gold and loading the Vanilla Civ3 save. It will play the save as Civ3 PTW.

I have made some tests and this is what I found: If I run C3C v1.15, I can load and play any (.sav) game back to Vanilla Civ3 games. Once I save it; however, it becomes a C3C game. There is no going back. You can not play it in Vanilla Civ3 any more. I suspect it is the same with Civ3 Gold. It becomes a PTW save.

As stated above, I don't have Civ3 Gold so I may be wrong about this; but I don't think so. I would start looking for a cheap copy of Vanilla Civ3.

ya know... this is the 3rd time i have typed this because i am half asleep and keep hitting the wrong button ):

I have 3 separate games and not Gold.

It is my understanding that Gold comes with both Civ3 1.29 and PTW 1.27. Both should work with the Gold CD unless a patch was applied unnecessarily.

Misfit: You stated there was only the PTW folder in your infrogrames\civ3 folder. There should be other folders and files as well. If PTW or C3C is working, then the game is installed elsewhere. Check the properties of the desktop or start menu shortcut to check where the target file is located.

A simple reinstall may be all that is necessary.

is there any reason that my score doesn't register in the HOF? it used to work, but all of a sudden it stopped recording my scores. I have uninstalled it both C3C and Vanilla, deleted the Civ3 folder and all subfolders, and reinstalled. However I haven't had a chance to check if that will work. (Haven't finished a game yet, I only reinstalled last night)

If you're playing a mod or scenario (other than the Conquests) your score will not record in the HoF.

Greetings to you all. I have played a few of the "Conquests" scenarios and have noticed when I right click on a stack of units, I don't see the "set as defender" command. I take it that it is no longer an option to pick the unit you want to defend the hex. My question would then be, for example, would I need to put destroyers in every hex around my battleships to be able to defend against subs?

The only way to choose a certain unit to defend a tile (not hex) is to fortify the strongest defender. However, this is the way it works for land units in anyway.

Sea units do not fortify and are best used in stacks where the strongest defender will defend against all but sub attacks. I don't remember the stats in the WW2 conquest for subs, but in the epic game, i would think the AI sub would choose to attack a weaker unit than a battleship from the stack.

btw... at least up to C3C 1.15b you can fortify sea units. This makes them stay at the given location, and don't ask for new commands each and every turn. Very nice for blocking narrow "canals". If they would gain the fortification bonus, I am not sure about. This wouldn't make sense, but hey, there is a defensive bonus for maritime tiles, anyway!

No. No there isn't. In fact, water tiles are ALL 0% terrain bonus, and they are the only tiles that have a 0% terrain bonus.

Are you sure about that? Is that a C3C change? I was almost positive there WAS a bonus in vanilla and reasonably certain of it in PTW....

Thanks for some feed back and, I guess I played too many board wargames with hex maps. BTW, when playing the WW2 conquest, I had a stack of 3 battleships and a couple of destroyers. The Japanese attacked with a sub and two battleships fought it. The first battleship was sunk and the second one finally blew away the Jap sub. Another sub was seen approching. I sent some destroyers after it and sunk it. I wish we had the choice to put the destroyer in the stack as the main (1st) defender as we could in Civ2.

AFAIK attacking subs can choose a specific target out of a stack, so such an "assigning-a-defender" feature would steal away this special advantage of a sub. It's at least like that in the WW2 conquests.

Forget Civ2, this is a different game. Subs have the stealth attack ability. They can choose which unit in the stack to attack. Since the WW2 conquest has victory points enabled, i suspect the subs were just attacking the unit that got them the most points.

Wow. I stand corrected! I've been mistaken about water defense bonuses since Civ3 came out.

I must have forgot about the stealth ability. Thanx for setting me straight.
This game seems to get better over time. Let's hope we can enjoy a Civ4 in the future. :)

It is a waste to cut it down. You may even lower wealth if you cut down a forest that a Laborer in the city is on. Since the number of shields is based on how much wealth is made.
