C3C PBEM : "Zama" - Rise of Rome scenario-based PBEM

Thanks for the screenies WarningU2! LOVE 'em. Excellent job on your
comeback too.

The siege continues and at a great cost to both defenders and attackers. Many Mac units were brought down to 1 red but not destroyed. Macedonians keep coming and coming and coming. They must spend all day every day popping out babies.

The mtn pass has fallen with more heavy calvalry coming then expected. The women wail in horror and prepare by greasing their thighs rubbing dead ants on their genitals.

In the south our armies have been victorious. They have crossed the Nile and captured Pelsium from the Egyptians.

(sorry my screenies were overlaid)

Shrouded in secrecy, several Roman galleys have been sailing through the Balearic Islands, waiting until their scouts told them it would be safe to land on the Iberian coast. The word was given, and Ceasar tensly awaited any sign that the Carthaginians had spotted them. In 185BC, with no counterattacks forthcoming, he knew that the element of suprise had been achieved! He lead his armies, backed by heavy cavalry, and stormed the unsuspecting defenders of Nora. The elite spear fought bravely, wounding a cavalry, but died, and Augustus himself defeated the remaining Mercenary, securing the town as a new forward base! :) His follow-on forces, more cavalry, legions, and catapults, were able to finish off two wounded war elephants recouperating on a nearby hill, and securing the services of a Carthaginian worker, glad for once not to see their homes burning! Meanwhile, legions and siege trains continue to approach the Carthaginian capital in North Africa.

In celebration, the joyous people of Rome have declared Ceasar Augustus the First Consul of the newly formed Roman Republic! [party]

Celebrations throughout the Empire break out.

The capital builds a great wonder the Mausoleum of Mausollos.

At the siege of Melitene in the year 185 the Macedonians suffer a crushing loss. The defenders of Melitene rush 2 hoplights and a heavy calvalry and capture 3 catapults. A heavy calvalry is crippled and driven from the city walls. The preceding was done without any losses to our forces. We believe the tide of the war is changing.

In the south the Egyptians sue for peace. Interestingly ... a new Civilization the Celts have managed to use a new teleporting technology and absorb an Egyptian city. We here words of strange pointy eared dark skin men with boxes that flash and kill. We think it is just myth but scholars are afraid.

The battle for Melitene turns as the Persians advance on the Macedonian forces. No combat ... just movement a long the whole front.

And far to the west ... two heavy cavalry appear out of the wildes surprising the inhabitants of Ergili.

This move surprised the military advisors of WarningU2. I have consequently cut off their inferior heads for their incompetance.

I have found it very difficult to be bothered to play this PBEM for a while now, and have finally decided to stop. I have burned all my cities and launched a small counter-attack against the Romans with the bulk of my troops. Next turn I will destroy everything else, and officially end my participation. Civ3 simply isn't fun for me anymore...

I hope this doesn't spoil your game, and have fun playing on without me. :)

The furious Carthaginian counterattack was barely weathered by the battle-tested Roman legions, as Ceasar's army went into the red in Iberia  , and all of our African legions took at least some damage. Heavy cav was sent to pursue the remaining Carthaginian units in view in Iberia (with catapult support), killing an Elephant and spear, and capturing another catapult.

My deepest respect to Corsair, an honorable opponent. :goodjob:

I leave it to the fine kings of Persia and Macedon :king: on how to proceed from here, although I don't think this changes the strategic situation much, Carthage's remaining cities would have been under attack soon regardless. I don't think the outcome would have been much different.

My only concern is the breach of the rules about abandoning/razing cities. This has denied you Justus II the spoils of war. If you are willing to continue then I am.

I think it would have been better that a sub was found rather than what has happened, when Corsair didn't have fun playing anymore.

Of course you could say it is easy for me to suggest that, not having had my civ beaten down as badly, but the scenario is known going in and accepted that Romans will beat up its neighbours ... so ... :mischief:

Well, I've double-checked, and this game had no pre-agreed rules on abandoning cities (unfortunately). I've known from early on that they were going to be abandoned, as he has retreated with a true "scorched-earth" policy since I landed (and that's fine, we didn't agree before-hand not to). It has made it a challenge, I've only been able to capture a few cities intact, usually by surprise maneuvers, (which made it more interesting!). ;)

So Corsair's decision doesn't impact the probable result much, 2 of the 6 remaining cities I expected to fall this past turn anyway. For any future games, however, I would recommend a no abandoning/razing rule, or at least some limit (maybe no more than 3 cities per civ, or something) so it remains a strategic option, but not a standard policy. :)

If needed I can replace Corsair for the last few turns ?
In which case I would need his password.

Otheriwse you can just keep on or consider it a Roman victory and restart one.

Either way is fine with me, up to Macedon and Persia. We discussed starting a new game, I'd even be willing to swap to Carthage if we can find a new Rome player (assuming they want to replay their current civs).

Hey, I wouldn't mind stepping in as Carthage here either (or whatever is left of them.. is anything left?) ;)

I'm only 3 turns from finishing another RoR game as Carthage, so a few extra turns in another game could be fun (it sounds like it won't be more than that before I die)

If we want to continue, we'd need to back up to the previous turn, before Carthage razed their last 6 cities. I don't have their password, but I do have the Admin password. I'll still leave it up to Macedon and Persia, as they need to say if they would still want to continue once Carthage is eliminated.

I am of the opinion of restarting this one with randomizing the civs on emporer difficulty with an additional rule of only 1 MA at a time.
Just my $20 or something like that.

Sounds good to me, with maybe adding a restriction on city razing/abandoning (either none, or a limit of no more than 2-3 cities per civ).

It appears the majority want to restart ... lets do it. I'll be happy to play anything that puts me on the same side as the diety player

Persia is fine with me but whoever as long as we play to the end (the bitter end) is good for me.

If its any consolation Macedonian ... I think you would have won now that you opened up the second front by coming up deep in my western cities.

Let me know when we are restarting ...

MA ... ? Military alliance ?

Are we putting money on this ? Even better. :king:

OK, consensus seems to be to restart. We still need a committed 4th player, though. Ironduck volunteered to fill in, are you up for a full game? :)

Also, what about the no razing/abandoning rule idea? Ban it entirely? Allow a limited number? I can see some strategic reasons for sacking a city, but I'd like to avoid a total scorched earth policy too.

@WarningU2: Yes, MA=Military Alliance. The rule would be that a human player can only sign an MA with one AI vs. another civ at a time. So, for example, Macedon could sign an alliance with the Scythians against the Persians, but could not also sign up the Egyptians, as long as that first alliance was in effect. Now, if they wanted to declare war on Rome too, they could sign up another civ, like the Celts, against Rome.

Are we putting money on this ? Even better.
Sorry, I don't make enough net GPT to afford that!! ;)
(Not after paying maintenance and unit support on 4 kids!!!)

Betting on Civ 3 is a bad idea. That was suppossed to be a spin on my two cents.
I like the 1 Military alliance at a time rule. Yes MA= Military Alliance. We could find a fourth and then have Lou, or some other party randomly divvy out sides.
About the last/current game. I do not know if I would have won that game, I was driving down that second front for about 3 more turns, or until I got stopped, then I was going to make a push for Antioch, down the coast. I was basically gonna try to keep all of your units off balance and running from 1 side of the empire to the other.
When my offensive versus you would stall out, I was going to acquire some territory from the Scyths, in the hope that their land could help versus Justus's land grabs.
I still highly doubt I had any prayer of winning against Justus only having to beat 2 Regent AI's though.

Sorry, I don't feel like playing a full RoR again just as I'm finishing the previous on (which has lasted almost a full year!).. would rather play some new scenarios I haven't tried before so I'll pass this one :)
