Call me stupid but...

How do I get the Adaptive trait to work? I expected a popup or something to appear on my first turn as Cassiel, similar to Decius' alignment, but nada. Even some 15 turns in I haven't found anything where I could choose my third trait. Is my game bugged or am I just overlooking something extremely obvious?
