Can anyone afford railroads?

A big difference from previous Civs, (and a rather depressing one), is that on OCC, you can't afford to build all the buildings.

You could afford to build all the buildings in a OCC in Civ 3?

there is a ridiculous amount of mis-information on this board. mis-information and down right useless information.

Immortal what?

Total cost for having all generic buildings (not coastal, no special power plants, no resource buildings like forge or monastery) in a city is around 60 GPT per city, add 6 GPT for a railroad connection. Please do show me that city which can produce 66 GPT without having 2 puppets to support it. That's excluding things like military support, paying off city-states, research agreements, unit upgrades...

Not all playstyles aim for massive conquests which are the only way to support mega-cities, so stop talking nonsense please. Maybe you'll learn some downright useless information.

i just dont get you guys.

immortal.

railroads: you dont need them everywhere, just hook up a few of your best cities, and usually they arent too far away from your capital anyway. and obviously use harbours where possible.

can i afford it? easily.

and who wrote that crummy list of buildings taht should only be built? what was it? a market, collusem and monument? build all culture building that are available, right up to the broadcast tower. build right up to stock exchange. in your biggest cities build workshops, factories....

im never skint in this game and i dont even trade post spam.... the odd TP here and there will keep u afloat.

The games ends before oyu can use all that stuff, and if it doesn't for oyu maybe you should figure it out before you complain about how everyone else is giving out useless information.

Lots of what people say assumes you want to at least try and play optimally moving towards a fast win or score, if you don't want to do that fine but don't complain their info is wrong.

I play on Emperor, build between 3-8 cities, don't bother with puppets, build not just universities but public schools and sometimes even research labs, and have money coming out of my ears. It's a matter of expanding into luxury-laden areas, jacking pop up to #1 or #2, trading every multiple luxury to the other civs, allying with as many SC as possible, and timing GAs to build the waterfall of post-classical culture and gold-producing wonders. This becomes an interlocking system of gold and happiness that feeds itself.

Yeah, I'd say the same thing for library and if available, circus. I'd say the buildings worth it to build are:

-Monument
-Coliseum
-Market
-Library
-Circus, if available
-Bank and Stock Exchange, if you have enough production
-Mint
-Temple and Monastery, if you need the culture

Those have pretty cheap maintenance and you can still afford railroads.

I would broadly say that if you're building that many buildings, that it's probably good to have a Workshop if the city has at least 10 base hammers to work with - better with more, of course.
