I'm sure you've seen the "some of your units have joined the Mercurians". but how does that work. My living units? My dead ones? How do they do it?

The units you have which follow good religions (RoK, Empyrean, Order) join the Mercurians after the death as Angels (which have the XP of your slain unit). The units with evil religions (AV, OO, CoE) join the Infernals as Manes. The religion of the unit is determined at its creation in a city and depends on the religions present in that city, dunno the exact numbers.

So it's only units I know longer have? Why are the announcements only on rare occasions?

Why are the announcements only on rare occasions?

The announcement occurs directly when your unit following a good religion dies in combat.

and if built in a city following a good religion you only have like a 1 in 3 chance of the unit following the religion, so you having few cities with good religions or units that arent dying very fast it will be a rarer popup

Disciple units always follow their own religion. Otherwise, dash5 is right.

When playing as the mercurians, I once had the RoK hero become an angel... with 100+ exp... good times...

A good canditate for an angel of death. Promtote to march while still an angel and then upgrade.

yea, in fact, Bambur was killed by Ogres in our epic battle, and the Angel of Death upgraded from the Angel of Bambur ended up killing Mardero, as well as the first form of Hyborem.

That was fun. I didn't know about the March thing though.

Does it matter the religion of the defeating army? If 2 "good" civs are at war, will angels be born?

Interesting. 2 good civs both following order are at war killing each other, and I the Mercurians have received no angels for their loses.
