all i know about it is that the USA won and gained a bunch of land and the California declared it's independence from Mexico, but was later annexed by the USA(i forget how it was annexed).

Mexico had won independence from Spain in 1821. It encompassed not only the current territory, but also Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California and parts of Colorado. Texas broke off in 1836 (incited by the US) becoming the "Lone Star Republic" and joining the Union in 1845.

In the same year, 1845, James Polk (D) ordered General Taylor to move his troops to the banks of the Rio Grande and offering a challenge to the Mexicans. Polk's declared goal was to acquire California for the US. The border between Mexico and the US was not clear, it was considered the Rio Bravo by the US and the Nueces River (150 miles north)by the Mexicans.

In 1846 Taylor set his camp opposite to the Mexican town Matamoros, in the middle of another former Mexican settlement, whose inhabitants were driven off their land.

Now all that they lacked was an incident. A Colonel of Taylor's camp was found dead, Mexican guerrillas were assumed to have killed him. In addition a patrol got surrounded and wiped out by Mexicans.

This was the long expected reason for a declaration of war.

some what brief overview: the war was between 1846-1848. it started when the u.s. annexed the texas republic in 1845. mexico had never concidered texas a seperate nation but a rebellious province. trouble broke out when tring to fix the new borders between mexoco and the state of texas. the u.s. said it was the rio grande river, but mexico claimed it was hundreds of mile north of that. when word got out that the u.s. ambassadors had plans to buy or annex califoria and new mexico revolution broke out in mexico and the president overthrown. the new govt. prepared for war and massed troops near the rio grande. the u.s then too begain placing troops near the river and soon a smirmish broke out. president polk declared this an attack against americans on american soil and declared war.

general zak taylor led a small amry into mexico winning a series of battles at palo alto, resaca dela parma and buena vista. at the same time a small force under kearny liberated santa fe and califoria-which was already up in arms against the local mexicans.another small army under general winfield scott invaded near vera cruz and marched on mexico city. they won battles at contreas and chrubusco and finally took the city.

the treaty of guadalupe hidalgo gave the u.s. arizona, california, nevada, new mexico, texas, utah, colorado, kansas, oklahoma and wyoming

While Taylor fought the Mexicans, US forces moved into California, driving the Mexicans living their off their land and declaring the "Bear Flag Republic", while promising the native Americans "true liberty". Revolts of the remaining Mexican population lost the US Lost Angeles and led to a bloody battle at the beginning of 1847.

At the same time G. Taylor moved south through Mexico. The heat and lack of water reduced his forces dramatically.

The US navy bombarded Vera Cruz, killing mostly civilians but forcing the city to surrender.

General Scott moved to Mexico City, the last battle, which was devastating for both sides. The US took the city, while the Mexican General, Santa Anna, moved north.

In 1848 both sides signed the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which gave the US half of the Mexican territory, set the border at the Rio Grande. New Mexico and California were ceded to the US for $15 million.

Correct me where I'm wrong.

Actually, I believe the Americans considered the Rio Grande to be the border.

It's the same thing. :)

Also, I recall the 'California Bear Flag Republic', being about a few drunks whom stormed the capital building, killing everyone in sight (unarmed civilians) and declaring it an independent country.

The US troops arrived 11 days later, and that flag was brought down.

CALIFORNIA WAS NEVER A REPUBLIC, THE WAY TEXAS WAS!!! :p
