Unlocking Exploration and Modern Age civs.

Finally we got the answer to this question that have been plaguing us... albeit with a bit of confusion, as I think most of us considered a resource unlock the same as a gameplay one, but I guess Sar means that gameplay is like, building cities on x places, while resources is acquiring x amount of a resource (which is something you need gameplay to get anyway).

Maybe they'll be as simple and generic as being based on the Starting Biases... The only one we know is Mongolia which is unlocked by three Horse resources, and their only Starting Bias in the guide is Horses.

For a civ like Russia, with specific Tundra based bonuses, it seems clear that their unlock would be Tundra based, which is also their Starting Bias.

If it's just this generic for every civ I'd feel a little bummed but I won't disappoint myself early for no reason.

"Resource or gameplay" is interesting. It seems that there's a "type" of unlock that is different from the default "have x of y resource" which is somewhat linked to gameplay.

America: have 3 cities in the DL
Mexico: have 12 pops in the DL
France: have access to 3 wine resources
Qing: have 5 trade routes going that you started
Russia: have a city on a tundra tile
Abbasids: have access to 3 camel resources
Inka: have 8 mountain tiles in your territory

These are just guesses. You can make a case that they would be different types of unlocks (gameplay vs. resources vs. biomes), but I wouldn't bother.
Anyway, gameplay could also mean by your civ or leader choice. FXS often isn't quite as precise in their naming as we would like them to be.

I think they're good guesses. Majapahit may have something like have a city (2 cities) on an island? Hawai'i something similar. Shawnee and Songhai something to do with rivers. Normans, Iron, Chola Tropical? French: wine!

So could I play as Mississipians and Shawnee and then in modern become Russia by simply having picked Catherine as a leader in antiquity? This to me feels like a cheat to simply get there where I want to be.

Whereas other civs might have that luxury?

Let's see:
America ✅
Germany/Prussia ✅
French Empire ✅
Russia ✅
Meiji ✅

Qing - Confucius?
Mughals - Ashoka?
Siam - Trung Trắc?
Buganda - Amina?

Mexico - probably no leader unlock

Looks like at least 5 of the base game modern civs will have the option to be unlocked in antiquity. Others might follow with DLC. I'm really not sure on the ones I put with "?" by the way - it could be all, none, or some. And if Mexico would be the only outlier, maybe a left-field unlock like Pachacuti works for them. But what's for sure: not every leader/civ is as good a combo as Catherine + Russia.

Ashoka unlocks the Chola (from a screenshot in the Legends and Mementos Dev Diary).
I know that screenshot. There is a bit of black space below the line that says he unlocks Chola. Could be that it usually says "unlocks Mughals" when the screenshot is not tinkered with. Could also just be the normal distance between paragraphs. Alternatively, the other Ashoka could unlock Mughals. So, I think a "?" is still legitimate.

Btw the same screenshot confirms random leaders. Haven't noticed that until right now.

Probably it wasn't finalized when we started getting those guides.
Maybe, but some version of the game is already with reviewers. If there are unlocks, like the one mentioned for Mongolia at the announcement, then the YouTubers and influencers and critics are playing around with them as we type away here…

I guess we might know some of this by tomorrow when we get new previews from the final version. Maybe there are restrictions to not talk about anything past antiquity, but what would be the point of that now with the other ages already revealed?

Ooohh what do we get tomorrow??

Yes, but in the versions we've seen on streams, there were no gameplay unlocks shown. So, my guess is what they were tuned in the last months and developers decided not to add them to guides.

Surely, once press reviews will start pouring, we'll see them.

GameStar, a german gaming journal, announced last week that they got full access to civ 7 for review. They said that they aren't allow to post a review until the 3rd of February but that they are allowed to post previews and talk about their impressions starting 16th of January. I assume the same is true for all other gaming media, potentially even content creators.

Not only this, but YouTubers have indicated that they will have videos coming out tomorrow as well (I expect Potato, Ursa, Marbozir and others). I think there is a Switch 2 announcement or something also, perhaps showing off Meiji Japan and Himiko.

I think Amina is Songhai
and if we include other exploration
Isabella Spain
Ashoka (renouncer) Chola (from dev diary)
Tecumseh Shawnee
Pachauti Inca
?Confucius?Ming?
?Ibn Battuta?Abbassid?
?Charlemagne?Normans?

Yay!

I’ve noticed an uptick in Civ VII coverage. Potato has some videos out covering the dev diaries, which I assume are sponsored content.

Very excited to hear there will be gameplay/ resource unlocks for everyone.
I can imagine any number of ways on my path to modern, the playthrough taking a swerve from my intended path, either because of some synergy with city states takes me in a different direction, or just getting hemmed in or finding myself in a bind, its nice to know I might unlock something that can work based on what I have going on, that works better in the moment.
