If you make someone your vassal can that civ still launch a space shuttle or end the game by culture?

yes...but if you let that happen you should not be playing this game ;)

Man that is messed up. So basically you shouldn't capitulate someone who is in danger of finishing a space shuttle, because if you do there's no way to destroy their cities later?

Well, it depends. You can direct the research of your vassals, so just keep them from teching the parts techs - or trading for them. Might be best to knock out a few of their big cities too.

You shouldn't capitulate someone that you haven't crippled their ability to win, yes. Same applies to culture victories, where you want to take out at least one of their 3 culture cities.

Note that as long as they have at least one tech they're missing for space, you can constantly make them research non-space techs and future tech 9000 if they are your vassal.

You can also use spies to destroy parts. Or just declare war on a neighbor of theirs and let them get pounded, or at least force them to build units.

If you capture one civilization's capital, it resets their spaceship after it is launched.

This happened to me once by accident. I was playing Earth 18 as the Persian and vasseled Izzy. She built the AP and was running under christianity while almost everyone else was buddhist. She then won the AP election for the head of it (I didn't care lol as it was just the initial election).

Then she won by the victory election. I literally stared at my machine with an open mouth. Then I laughed.

The funniest part was that I had forced her out of theology to free religion (she had been buddhist before I declared war on her). When she switched back later, she also switched to christianity. It was my fault lol.

Whut?
That sounds almost impossible. Usually she has only got one city, and if she is a heathen, why does she get any votes?

She had three cities as I had moved her start to the east. Also, she was a heathen, but since she was the one who built the AP, and she was christian, the vote was based on Christianity

EDIT: None of my cities had Christianity in them at that time

I thought that to win an AP vote every civ had to have at least one city of the AP religion. That's why it's easy to win cus you can convert one city of each AI while all your cities are the AP religion, thus giving yourself a majority of votes.

Anyway in my GEM game (which you can follow on the forum it's GEM 2.5 David) China has built a couple spaceship parts so I didn't know if I should kill Qin or vassal him. But you're right, I can direct his research so he never gets fusion. Pretty easy.

Always check the culture of a AI that wants to peacevasall to you... and if you're expecting a long game, better check if it has Sistine Chapel. Not only might that AI win by culture (which is actually the biggest treat from peacevassaling AIs), they'll also might culture pressure your cities. Although you won't lose tiles, your cities might go into revolt. Happened to me once, and it annoyed the crab (yes, lost my crabs with that every few turns, which was serious -health) out of me.

Unless the vasall wins culture, you're not in danger that way, but it's indeed annoying.

Vassals can definitely win. Although if the human is paying attention it shouldn't be their vassal. The point about being careful of taking vassals having Sistine is especially true, vassals trying for Culture victory is common. In half of my games that he's in, Mansa tries to vassal to a power and then gun for culture while under protection.
