Is it possible to generate Great Leaders using naval units, especially Privateers ?

I'm currently playing a very peaceful game as the Greeks (now up to 1850) and I have just got an Elite Privateer unit, after defeating some barbarian ships off the coast of America.

Now, if I (secretly) send this Privateer into combat against another nation's navy will there be a possibility of generating a Great Leader as a result, or do Great Leaders only ever appear from land-based battles ? I really want to build the Heroic Epic you see ;)

has anyone ever got a great leader from naval combat (or air combat for that matter) ??

thanks

Don't think that is possible. How would he ever get away from a coastal, sea or ocean square? Privateers can't transport units, so Great Leaders would need to be great swimmers as well :D

Nope. I suppose the all are taken by sharks or scurvy. No naval great leaders.

Didn't think of that ! :crazyeye:

I was hoping for an Admiral Nelson or an Admiral Jellicoe :king: Shame.

Maybe they can fix this in the next patch, so they appear in nearest port or just make 'em good swimmers ;) !

I suppose a Great Air Force Leader would simply fall to his death, unless he had a parachute handy....

Don't think that is ever going to get changed, because GLs are a great asset for ground combat. IMHO no one would ever make use of naval armies. Or do you mean to create a normal GL?
I usually play pangea, so i hardly ever build sea units. I think it's a major problem for the English (having these crappy ManOWar UU) to trigger their GA by winning a battle. At that point, sea battles are quite rare, at least from my experience.

don't get this whole bomber and jet fighter business anyway. what's the point in having them promoted? harder to intercept? can't see them fighting anyway:confused:

LOL! This thread is funny!

Nelson could easily appear in a dinghy or in the modern era a motor yacht. I could make use of a navy as easily as I could an army.

I once got a great leader from a marine attacking a city amphibiously from a transport. I don't think that qualifies as a Naval Great Leader however.

What was interesting was what happened just after the leader was generated. I reflexively fortified the leader when given the opportunity, and later moved the transport into the then-"liberated" city. Unfortunately, I apparently should have given the "Load" command instead of the "Fortify" command, because I "fortified" my leader in the coastal square. He wasn't in the transport, he wasn't visibly in the coastal square, but he showed up as an available leader in my military advisor screen -- he seemed to have disappeared.

It was only a few turns later that I figured out I could double-click (or maybe it was right click) the picture of my available leader in my military advisor screen and wake him -- which caused my view to go to a leader hovering off the coast of the original city. I was able to move a transport into the sqaure, load the leader, and bring him to shore safely.

It seems that Great Leaders can not only inspire citzen laborers to build wonders of the world quite quickly, but also can tread water for years at a stretch ;).

A short tip pointed out that if you are using elite marines it is worth only having seven units per transport so that the GLs miraculous powers are not overly taxed.

I'll try making a Great 'Jesus Marine' Leader when I'm next using marines !
