I played a game with Arabians yestarday. It was my first serious game since I got Civ4. At the beginning i was doing good ( leading by points ) , but towards the end i got bypassed and ended up with 2000points, while ghandi ( that bastard :P ) had like 3600 at that time.

So, my quiestions.
1How many cities do you guys usually have? I had 7, thats to few right?

2What is the Epic speed of the game?

3I noticed that judaism was alot more popular than buddhism ( which i founded ) , should i aim for founding judaism instead?

4Towards the end i fell behind in Research. I mean, others were 4 techs ahead of me! I had research at 90% all throught the game! What did I do "wrong".

Also, for some ***** up reason i didnt get a manual with my game, so some of my questions can sound n00bish :D

One more thing. I was also making alot of money. SO when i lost i had around 10k gold. What is the best use of gold in the game? I found myself not using it to other than upgrading units :( THe prices other civ wanted for technologies were ridiculaus btw.

That happens. Especially if you fall behind in technology; resulting in not getting the ending wonders, which tends to limit your end-game production. This makes you poor in comparison to the other countries.

7 cities is very good for a small map, or a standard map. Heck you can even do well with a large map with 7 cities; so long as your goal is not military conquest. Culture victories have been done with only 3 cities before.

2What is the Epic speed of the game?

Epic Speed slows down the production, and research for all civilizations. I personally never play on this speed finding it to drain all the fun out of the game. I'd be alot happier with slower research and normal production with more turns. Too bad Epic sucks.

The religions are even. You either:

- Failed to build temples, monastaries, cathedrals or Prophet built Temples, which helps to spread your religion faster.

- Failed to grow your Holy City {The city with your founded religion}, which limits your religion's rate of spreading. The bigger your holy city's population, the more your religion spreads.

- Failed to open borders with other countries. Religions only spread naturally to cities that your cities have trade routes with. You can't have international trade without open borders.

- Failed to build Monastaries, or use Organized Religion so you could build Missionaries for your religion. To use missionaries you need to move them over onto the other Civilization's cities. To do this you'll also need an open border; or you'll need to be at war with the civilization to get the missionaries into their borders.

You did not have as much money as they did. Which is most of the time a direct byproduct of not having enough production to build all the required buildings while still keeping up with your military presence. This is most common when you're a war-monger whos spent most of his time building units for rushes, rather than taking the time to throw up that ever-required bank to earn an extra 10 gold per turn. Trade routes are also your friend; so it's wise to at least be friendly with one or two nations so you can have open borders for international trade. A tip is to not have open borders with civilizations that're literally your neighbors. They tend to betray you, or flood your cities with missionaries even on the lower difficulties.

The manual is only for people who buy the Special Editions.

Thank you for taking the time to anwser me.

Just couple of things. You said i probobly didnt have as much money as they did. Well, i had 10k, they had under 1k from what i saw on the trade screen. So that wasnt the problem i guess.

Starting a new round. see what i can manage this time :D

I've noticed that the AI has more money than it leads on in the trade screen.

That Inca bastard had only 20 gold on his screen, when I had 200... yet I came in second place for wealth to him? Either I beat him to the production of a wonder, or the money in the trade screen is only what they're willing to trade.

Also note that your science production is directly effected by buildings like the library, observatory, and university. Make sure you build them when you get them!

Sometimes in the early stages of development; I find it more important to get the Library first. {Only if I have two or three cities with 10-20+ hammers producing} Even before getting Iron Working!

The reason for this is, with a couple libraries in place, you've just jumped your science production by 50-150%. Which turns those 10 turn waits into 6 turn waits. Saving 4 turns is huge.

At the end, the AI's probably pumped out a bunch of laboratories and a couple of wonders or great leader's to put them in the lead.

The AIs trade tech with each other. If you are lax in trading you will fall behind. Diplomacy is important.

In all fairness, I think this seems to be the most likely scenario why you were falling back in tech.

The world can be a hostile place without friends, indeed.

research percentage is not so much indicative of your research versus of other players. The fundamental question to ask is, "a research percentage of what?" How big were your cities? How many research buildings (library, observatory, etc.) did you build? Go to this game you played, and see if you can at least compare your city size to the other cities, that should give you a rough indication of what was going on.
