Can you win without your starting settler?

i explained one way to do it: germany converting a barb archer.

Yeah but i'm talking about other civs. Sry if i wasn't clear enough. Germany is kind of ''special''.

Great deal with Eldorado! :goodjob:

meh, i tried a setup to get this with germany (huge map, only a few civs, no cs) and it doesn't work. barbarian archers don't have a GoodyHutUpgradeUnitClass (and neither do brutes, so you can only get spearman) =(
on the plus side, converted barb archers do have 7 str instead of a regular archer's 6. germany can dominate this... there's other fun stuff like you can and should take honor social policies by hitting f5. warrior code won't give you a GG, but you can get honor and discipline pretty easily with the right map settings. also, allying a military cs will only ever get you warriors.

This was easier then I first thought on low difficulty. Played Polynesia on an archipelago map. Got almost all ruins for myself and from them 2 settlers and 2 workers. Didn't take long before I passed the other civs. Have to try this on higher difficulty.

germany, chieftain, huge map vs 2 civs (vs 2 prevents the autofail on turn 11 from opponent being only civ with capital)

9 warriors, 4 archers, and a spearman against a 9 strength city? I like your chances :)

I gave it a shot last night for grins. I also used Germany on Prince/Continents with normal settings. Gave my settler to Oda then grabbed 2 warriors from barb camps and took Lhasa (then size 3, 10 defense). Coastal, with 1 fish (already worked), silk (already with plantation), and 2 hills mined. Pretty good starting location really. I went honor (had over 400 gold when I capped Lhasa due to goodie huts I'd already gotten) and very quickly had 3 cities. Beelined IW (2 nodes near Lhasa) upgraded my captured warriors and quickly went on the offensive. I took Oda out by turn 75. It was pretty awesome :)

I turned the game off after that so I didn't get an official win. I just wanted to see how I'd fare with this setting. Good times!

Haha great vexing!

Now, can you show us how to beat this setting without Germany? Do you think it's possible? I'm too lazy these days to try(have to finish G-Major too).

How can you generate units if you can't ally a militaristic cs? Hmm.

So does a person then go after the 2nd civ, get it's capitol down to 1 hit point then annex the first city before capturing the 2nd capitol?

you can ally military city states; gold and culture are accumulated as normal even though they're not shown. there are a few options for other civs. any civ in general can just farm camps and ruins enough to ally a military cs or a few, askia would be well suited to this approach.

persia, greece and mongolia all can take out an opponent with a single spearman using a combination of luck and promotion saving. it's tough because you will only tend to do a net of 3 dmg per turn at most, so it's going to take about 7 turns to take a capital. if you farm barb exp before starting, you'll earn enough exp for the third instant heal before its needed but you won't earn enough for a fourth.

alternatively, any civ could potentially take a non capital by the same means: the -2.5 defense and -1 healed per turn due to lacking palace both would make this significantly easier. i'd choose napolean as opponent if trying this, as he tends to go liberty -> settler

i wouldn't be surprised to see germany able to beat deity on marathon without starting city, with properly cooked settings.

hmm, i wonder why i didn't lose the game when hiawatha was the only civ left with a capital. i'll have to reload that and check it out later - it might have interpreted gao as my capital given it's the first city i owned.

What would happen then if there were 3 opponents, and one of them invaded Gao? Would they get the choice to liberate it, or would it count definitively as your capital?

I don't think the devs thought about this one :P

what if you took a city and decided to puppet rather than annex it (as your capital??). Then you took several other cities as puppets, meaning that you would have a puppet empire w/out any city as your own. Would this mean culture policies would be cheaper??

btw, with my game on emperor last night on turn 50 I hit a golden age without any cities. I was playing as germany, pangea, 8 civs/16 city states and El Dorado on turn 5. So I guess each turn I was gettin' 10 happiness. I allied with a militaristic cs early on, and after a little while two culture cs once I had a few cities, some gold generating, and a ton of gold from the Ottomans.

Went to war with America at about turn 60... walked over New York (my German capital), then took another of their cities. Washington was taken by the Ottomans so bye bye America. A little later I declared on the Ottomans and took Washington. They sued for peace, giving me a ton of gold (like 1400) and two cities (Ankara and another). I kept Ankara since it bordered my other three cities but burned the other. So by turn 100 I believe I was up to 4 cities. Then around turn 120 or so I declared on Japan which was very close. They only had one city, their capital. By this time I had swords and a number of archers. Their defense was at 19 so no cake walk. I destroyed their army then moved in. At this point I noticed France coming over as well. We both pummeled Japan's capital for several turns... though at the end of my first attempt at weakening the city I left it too weak, then France took it. I learned my lesson, so didn't attack so much before it was France's turn so I could take it on mine after rerolling.

So on about turn 150 I have five cities including two capitals after disbanding my opening settler. Probably no chance in winning though since Korea is way ahead in tech

Nope - captured settlers turn into workers as mentioned above.
And then back into settlers if recaptured by the civilization that originally owned them. In the spirit of the challenge, you don't get to just recapture your starting settler.

Spain get the gold for discovering natural wonders.

I think so? (the capital might not count)

Military units would Only come from CSs (or German/Ottoman barbs)
Workers would only come from Captures (or Liberty)

You wouldn't Build any Wonders (World or National)... and No Factories/Nuclear/Hydroplants or Space Ship Factories

You would almost entirely get great Merchants (except for captured Wonders and Liberty/Patronage)

Honor would be important because you would have few Military units, so they need to be boosted (and Defensive buildings would boost happiness)
Patronage would be useful for picking up all Militaristic CSs... and the Cultural CSs would be good to because of the low Policy costs... and the opportunity to get more Great Persons

i tried this on settler level with germany...
disbanded my initial settler
found a goodie hut which gave me a settler... disbanded him too as that would be too easy!
picked up a worker from next goodie hut.
first 3 barb camps gave me units so i ended up with 1 spear and 3 warriors.
easily enough to take 3 city states and set me up. think it might have been turn 50 or so, but pretty sure that's fine to come back on that level.
