Anyone have any idea what this is? Every time I try to download a scenario, this is what shows.

Thoughts?

That is very strange as BITS is Microsoft's background transfer service. What OS are you running? It doesn't make sense that yours is not running as it should be transparent to the average user.

Windows XP. Should this be an issue?

Honestly it shouldn't be but obviously it is for you.

I just did a quick search on Microsoft's support site and about the only thing I came up with is this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969632

If you feel confident enough to follow their instructions I would give it a try and see if it fixes your problem.

Please understand I'm by no means an expert on this, I just happen to know what BITS is because the developers where I work use it in their coding.

There was a time when a bunch of people were claiming that Windows hogged 20% of your bandwidth and you could get it back by turning off the BITS service in the services control panel. Nonsense of course, but many people still followed that advice. That might be why it's turned off for you.

O wow Meneer. That's pretty strange if you ask me. Yes Microsoft sometimes has some programs that hog resources but to disable BITS seems to be a bit extreme.

If that is the case you can go into your services and try and restart BITS or check to see if it's set to manual or is disabled.

Thank's guys. Coming home tomorrow and Ill try to fix it first thing based on the instructions in the link. I bever disabled BITS, infact, I had no idea what it was untill today.

The in game Mod Browser does not work for me most of the time. I keep getting an error message. Most of the mod's I have was downloaded from here and then added to the right folder then installed in the mod browser. Any suggestions on why the in game Mod Browser is not working properly would be of great help. Thx!!!!

CGG68, can you please be more specific about the error you are experiencing? For example, what is the error message you are getting? What are you doing before you receive the error?

I click on download.
Shows connecting in a box. Then the box changes to Error (mouseover for details).
Details: The server does not support the necessary HTTP protocol. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) requires that the server support the Range Protocol Header.

Thanks for any help in this matter and for your quick response PeaceOfMind.

Moderator Action: Threads merged.

Above you can see a suggested solution, sadly the OP did not respond if it worked.
Maybe you can try it out :)?

Oh, thanks for that. Didn't see that thread.

Im running vista 64bit. I found the vista download and tried it but after running it told me there was no update needed.
Also I am running the current patch 1.0.0.20!!

Thanks The_J for your help maybe I can find more info out later. Like I said before if I download the files from here then place them in the Mod folder it gives me the option to install them correctly in the in game Mod Browser. I have gotten 2 Mods to download from the in game Mod Browser, if that doesnt I come back here hoping they posted a download link here, but most have not because of the new easy mod loading system in game...LOL!!!

Im trying to create a Europe based scenario and would like to be able to download the denmark and spain civs people have built to added to it.

Are any of you with download mod problems by chance using a wireless home network? I've heard that Steam has issues with wireless and less so with hard wired networks. I too had this problem on my home wireless network but the patch fixed it. Perhaps it did not work for everyone...

Hi folks. I bought Civ V yesterday after reading good things about it's linux compatibility (intended or not).

After some initial teething problems, I've gotten it and steam installed and working perfectly under Ubuntu 10.04. Played 140 turns of a game as japan yesterday, The only potential problem is very minor framerate issues, which may just as well have something to do with running all settings maxed out, I'm not worried about that.

However, today I've been disappointed, attempting to take my first steps into modding Civ V. The ingame mod browser does not allow me to download anything. The button gives the error "Cannot Download because microsoft BITS is not started"

Does anyone know how to run this service under linux? Or am I limited to only downloading zip files and manually

I never had any problems with Civ IV in linux. Stupid microsoft components :(

Hi
When I try to down load the mods in the game (the ones everyone tends to recommend like the economy mod) i bring up the mod press download and then accept on the Firaxis screen but nothing happens.
If I press the download button on the mod in the list I get a message saying microsoft BITS has not started?
I run windows XP with service pack 3

How do I start BITS

Robert

PS sorry if this is posted in the wrong place

Try enabling Background intelligent transfer services in Local services (start, run, compmgmt.msc, services, local services)
