Cannot load a cloud save

Hey forum

So my desktop is having trouble loading cloud saves. Whenever I try to load the specific save (one that has been used both on my laptop and desktop), the game simply crashes saying 'Sid Meier's Civilization 5 has stopped working..."

I AM able to make new games. I AM able to load saves, and, oddly enough, I AM able to load other cloud saves (only tested it on a pre-G&K save).

Also, this has occurred with multiple saves, all of them having been used both on my desktop and laptop.

EDIT: I'm running on Directx 11, and my laptop has absolutely no problem loading the saves.

First, try verifying your game cache: Steam --> Library --> Right-click Sid Meier's Civilization 5 --> Properties --> Local Files --> Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

If that doesn't help, please post again.

Alright, so I've done the verification three full times now, with several verification's needed to get the install to complete when I launch the game, as the completion would get stuck at 2%, and upon re-running the verification it would suddenly find more files that needed repairing.

In all cases the verification finally confirmed there were no further files needed, the game crashed, and the verification suddenly found another 2 files that needed repairing.

EDIT: I'm reinstalling the game to see if that helps...only an hour to go Q_Q

Didn't work :/ In fact, I can't get the install completion to get past 2% now.

EDIT: Got it past 2% :S Still crashes, though.

Let me make sure that I understand your problem:

Does one specific cloud save fail to load on your desktop?

If yes, can you load that cloud save on your laptop?

If multiple cloud saves fail to load on your desktop, can you load all such cloud saves on your laptop?

Can you load any cloud saves on your desktop?

Thanks.

Yes.

Yes. (Playing it right now, actually :P)

I haven't seen any other saves fail so far, other than one other save that was in a similar situation, but my laptop could load it as well.

Yes, although the saves are pre-G&K, as I don't have any G&K saves other than the one that won't load.

Thanks for your reply. Can you save your current laptop game to its hard drive and then transfer it (via a thumb drive or something similar) to your desktop? Can you then load it on your desktop?

REALLY sorry for the late response, finals coming up in the next few days and whatnot :S

Yes, manually moving the file works great!

Well, this is interesting. It won't load anymore. After the initial loading I got off my desktop for a few hour and shut it down completely. Now when I try to load the game simply crashes.

However, this is only true with the file that I saved on the desktop (the save from the flash drive overwritten), and I just tested it by deleting the file (temporarily, else I'd lose several hours of progress) and then putting the flash drive save in again, and the desktop was able to load it fine.

I should note that I recently did a game cache check on my laptop, and after an initial massive fix (~32 files) it did the same 2% thing as the desktop.

This is confusing. The symptoms point to your desktop corrupting the save files. Are you having any other problems with your desktop? Have you run scandisk, or some other utility, to check for errors?

Look in your main Civ5 folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V in a default installation) for files with the extension .mdmp (these are crash dump files). Zip up the most recent one and attach it here. I can't read these files, but they might help the developers (assuming they are reading this thread) to determine the problem. Also post a copy of your DxDiag file.

Verification of the game cache will always reacquire two files. Not sure why the process hangs for you. Is your Internet connection reliable?

If anyone else who is reading this thread has any suggestions, please feel free to reply.

Good luck with your finals!

Alright, I zipped those two requested files.

A. The only real problem I have with my desktop is an occasional crash, which I'm 100% sure is related to my dual-HDD/SSD system. Basically, I screwed up when I bought this PC and got only a 60 Gb SSD. So I ended up wiring in my previous PC's 400 or so Gb HDD for the majority of my file storage. On occasion, the PC will simply crash, and the startup repair won't work, with my only option being to unplug the HDD, start the PC, shut it down, and plug it back in.

Right now I'm running a defragmenter and I'll look for a scandisk utility as well to see if they help.

B. It's possible that the thing isn't really freezing, but I'm just being impatient. I should be clear, though, that I CAN get it to go past, it just takes a few tries.

C. Thanks for the good luck :D

EDIT: Alright so this is interesting...so I loaded a random save on my desktop, and then saved it immediately and tried to load it under a new name. This was successful. Then, for the hell of it, I tried to load the problematic save- which also worked. This was, however, without any mods on. As soon as I added mods (just Camera Rotation and Ethnic Unit skins) to the mix the thing crashed again. So I deleted the Ethnic Units (because my laptop has no problem with Camera Rotation) and now it won't redownload (I checked the mod file and there are no remnant files), and the save is working fine with just Camera Rotation.

At this point, I don't know what else to suggest to fix the problem. If this affects just one specific game, I suggest accepting that you won't be able to finish this game and move on. Sorry that I can't give better advice. Perhaps someone else will weigh in.
