Can't attack barbarians

I haven't played Civ4 in a long time. I started up a game and it's going well, but now I'm in a situation where I can't attack barbarians anymore! I did earlier, but now it won't let me. My units just move to the same location instead.

Does anybody know what I did or what's going on? Thanks!

Are you trying to attack with a Scout or Explorer? Scouts and Explorers can only defend, not attack.

Indeed, but they can't stand on the same tile as Barbarians either!!

Ok, so it ended up being two things confusing me:

1) Scouts can't attack, which I didn't realize.
2) The "Barbarian" galley I thought I wasn't able to attack was actually my own, so I was just moving my unit onto another one...
