Can't figure out why some civs will accept gpt/resources as payment and others won't

Hey, I've read all of the articles on reputation and stuff, and I still cant seem to get it straight. I've been playing a game so far, and I've never been able to get a gpt deal with other than the Ottomans (save included). I'm getting over 300 gpt from him for techs I sold him, but Montezuma won't buy Medicine from me for 1gpt. The Ottomans know everyone, so If my rep was trashed for some reason, he wouldn't of accepted. As far as I know, I've never broken any deals, and I currently have ongoing lux deals with the other continent.

Aztecs won't buy Medicine, Communism, Steam Power, and 5gpt for 1 gpt.

Ottomans WILL buy Communism for 52 gold and 35gpt (won't buy for more becuase I'm already getting 300+gpt from them for other techs)

Ottomans WILL sell Facism for 180gpt.

Aztecs WILL sell thier World Map for 1gpt.

Aztecs will not sign a Mutual Protection Pact and give me 1gpt. They will for free, and will if I give them 1gpt or luxes.

Mongols won't sign a MPP and give me 1gpt. They will for free, and will if I give them 1gpt or luxes/iron.

Portuguese will buy Communism for 6gpt but no more.


Can someone diagnose the situation? Is my rep trashed or are the Civs I'm trying to get gpt from simply can't afford it? I have lux trades going with most civ that wont give me gpt. Thanks in advance.

If they won't buy your stuff for their gpt, it's because they can't afford it.
Your reputation only affects your ability to buy their stuff with your gpt and/or resources.

Thanks, it was sort of jumping all over the place. I have another question, if your rep is shot, can you still trade strictly per turn things for per turn things with no "on signing" deals, such as luxes for luxes and gpt?

You probably can...but you'll have to pay over the odds.
Also, you can include per-turn stuff as part of a peace treaty when your rep is shot.

Since they are willing to accept gpt from you, it sounds like your trade rep isn't broken.

Also be aware that the AI will never accept gpt from you if the amount will put you into deficit spending. For example, if your current income (after taxes) is, say, 10gpt, they will not accept an offer of 11 gpt. Even if you have 10,000 gold in the bank.

To get around this, you can drop your Science slider, for instance, make the deal, and then push the slider back up. After all, negative income is okay, as long as you have the reserves to cover it.

How come sometimes they will accept a deal but if I offer them a resource they change their mind and won't?

That can happen if your trade rep is busted.
