Have not been able to finish a single game. At some advanced stage each game starts to crash and not be able to be opened without a crash. All patches are up to date and computer easily capable of running the game.

Should I delete the installed portion from DVD from computer and reinstall?

Appreciate any assistance with this matter.

This probably belongs in the technical support forum, but I'll put in two quick cents.

"Computer easily capable of running the game" could mean a lot of things. If you're playing with 18 civs on a huge map at marathon speed, you need a lot more computer power than playing at standard size/speed/opponents. Just a thought. If your PC exceeds the recommended settings, and you're playing more or less standard settings and still having crashes, then I suggest a re-install.

Why did you call out Marathon? What about that speed would increase the requirements to run the game?

But yeah, I stick to Small maps because my five-year-old computer bogs down if there's too much going on.

Tracking a lot of units takes cpu oomph. Marathon does not normalize the cost to build units compared to other speeds, thus, they effectively cost 50% compared to "normal" speed. So if you are playing a Huge Marathon game, by the late eras there could be like a bagillionty units for your comp to track.

And Huge also boosts unit production.

Thank you all so much for the ideas and need for clarification. Really appreciate everyone who took the time to reply. You gave me good ideas.

However ... <smile>

Re computer: Youngest son built it and keeps it up to date. So have no idea what is involved in the internal workings. Know it handles other computer-demanding games with no stuttering or problems.

I'm playing only on small worlds, even tried removing the city states. Changed monitor settings and video options last evening. Well, said son came over and did! Shall keep this thread advised.

P.S. The only input I've had in this process is installing the game. So suspect install may have been done incorrectly.

It's the same problem I'm having. You start a game and when I get to around400 AD or so the game will crashes and if you load a save you can play a few minutes then crash again. I know my computer can run this game easily as I have had the game running for years on xp prior to getting Windows 7 and upgrading my processor and getting two more gigs of ram. And I always played with huge maps and marathon before.

Yes all drivers are up to date. The game needs a patch or something. I've seen this reported with both Nvidia and ATI cards .

i have seen the same issue the last 2 days, first my screen goes black and my screen goes to my desktop. I bring the game back up and can play for about 5 minutes before the game closes. I get a message that Windows is searching for a solution. running Win 7 ultimate nvidia GT7800 AMD athlon II x4 620. i patched BTS 2 weeks ago as i couldnt get civ4 vanilla to run properly

i have no problem with Civ III or Rome Total War, the only other games I play with any frequency. I dont get an error message, the game either drops and I get my desktop or the game closes with the message box that Windows is searching for a solution. I usually play huge maps but have plenty of memory use about 1.3 GB of 4GB available.

And whether you use huge maps or not should not be an issue. I have always played with huge maps and never had this problem until windows 7. My PC more than meets the recommended requirements.

For me either the game just freezes causing me to manually reboot or it closes with the windows is searching for a solution.

That is the same problem I'm having. The only way to get my computer to work again is by manually resarting it.

I know my computer can handle it. I've got an AMD Phenom II Black Edition 6 core cpu, ATI Radion HD 4650 video card, and 8 gb of ram. I found on another forum where another guy was having the same problem and he said he found the solution. He said it had to do with something in the ".ini" file but then he never reasponded back to what exactly.

For me it doesn't matter if its small or huge, quick or marathon.
Anybody have any ideas?

I'm still having the same issue. i have had no reply from the popup box saying windows will look for a solution either. i may have to go back to civ3 if this cant get fixed
