Hello, guys. I have just had an upgrade to Windows 7 and also have a new machine with a more power video card and an I.7 quad core but I can no longer load BTS and therefore play Planetfall. :(

I get complaints about problems with XML text, and for some curious reason it says I don't have the graphics power and that a voice capture file is disabled. I have uninstalled and installed several times but it makes no difference. Does this sound like a driver problem?

Oh dear, I always have problems like this when I upgrade! :(

Civ4 do not run under win 7! And i dont know any patch for thise problem.

your video card is, in my opinion, not the problem, the os is it...

Directx9c installed?!?!?

did you enable memsaver in the .ini? if so disable it...

disable the minspecswarning in the civilizationIV.ini

are your drivers compatible with 7?

Thanks for replying, Monaldinio. Hope all is well with you.

Civ 4, the basic game, seems to run under Win 7, I have played a few turns on it, but I can't run the BTS mod, at least so far. Some people online claim to have made it run under Win 7 and I am investigating this.

The Windows 7 program compatability site, you may be interested to know, actually states that it is compatible! ???

I should also say that I can't get the MS compatibility programme to work but then I never have with any MS OS system to which I have upgraded! I have always got things to work when some one provides the patch!

Thanks, im fine.
Im a little bit in stress because i have to do some examination...
This is the reason why may addon was published till now.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Tried again right now, again nothing.

For XML, check if you've installed the latest patch, and check, if nothing has remaind in the custom assets.
For the voice capture, look at your BtS.ini file and disable it there.

And if this lasts on further, then i'll move this stuff to the technic subforum ;).

Thanks for replying but this is starting to get just too complicated. I am not techie. :(

All I can say is that I have patched BTS with the latest patch, 3.19, and, curiously enough, the MS Seven program compatibility site gives a big green tick to its compatibility of BTS. ???

As for disabling ini files I think that is beyond me. Besides, either BTS works with Seven or it doesnt!

But again thanks for the reply, the J!

Do you want to know what is really funny? Civ IV is a year or two old but I have just managed to get 1999 vintage Micropose Star Trek to work under 7! Is there a moral here?

The compatibility site is correct. It works fine, no tweaking required.

Have you done as Monaldinio suggests and ensured that DirectX 9.0c is installed? I don't remember if Win7 has it installed by default, but I suspect it might not.

"Have you done as Monaldinio suggests and ensured that DirectX 9.0c is installed?"

Hmmmm.... perhaps I may. On the other other hand, when I am installing, the installation says it is looking for the appropriate Direct X version, takes a while to do so and doesn't say it hasn't found it. Also, any later Direct X version should play an earlier game, should it not?

But thanks for the suggestion, live long and prosper.

I don't know what more I can do. :(

I have just used the MS program which installs the latest version of Direct X and I still get the same error msgs as before. Problems with the XML language, complaints that I lack adequate graphics power and something about the voice user capability being disabled.

I am very disappointed. :( This was the one game I thought I would have no problems playing after an upgrade.

Cmcastl,

Just re-install the 9.0c Direct X from the BtS CD.

Then make sure you are playing as Admin not user. The UAC may need to be disabled. Do a Google search on how to disable it.

Rise of Mankind and it's Modmod A New Dawn has many Win 7 users playing. Everyone that has had problems is generally using their computer at the User level instead of Administrator. Once they log on as Admin most of their problems dissappear.

OT: Didn't you used to play MoO3 and visit the AtMoO forums?

JosEPh :)

That isn't the Joseph I know from MOO3, is it? :) if it is.

I am an administrator on my new system.

"The UAC may need to be disabled"? I don't like advice like that - I always feel I could screw up the entire OS. :( But I shall see what you mean by investigating online.

When I try to install, the DVD takes over and says that it is looking for all the directX Runtime elements; I don't know what to do about that. Or if I should even try to do something.

In short, it looks like I shall have to wait for Civ 5 because they will surely have to cater for Seven! Nothing less than a patch can save me now, Joseph. :(

I repeat, it is ridiculous. I can play games 11 and seven years old and I can't play BTS? Somebody had better get their rear in gear or they will lose a lot of players for Civ IV, as people gradually upgrade! I am not computer illiterate but neither am I a techie and I don't think I should be put through this on such a modern game! :(

Moderator Action: Split from the Planetfall download thread.

Okay, we should organize this a bit better.

a) for the voice capture device:
Open your BtS.ini (Standard path: C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civ4\BtS\Civilization4.ini, rightclick, open with wordpad/notepad), and change:
PHP:
; Enable voice over IP capture and playback
EnableVoice = 1

to 0.

b) Now tell us, what XML errors you exactly get.

Slight problem, The_J, even though I am the administrator of my 'puter it won't let me modify the Civ IV BTS.ini file! It says I don't have the permission to save in this location, that is, the Civ IV BTS folder. This may be Seven acting against me? Can I somehow invoke Administrator's rights to re-write the file. I am not prompted to do so for some reason.

In earlier OS systems, I never had a problem overwriting programs whether the result was good or bad!

It is okay; a rather nice protective feature of Seven. I can change a file outside of the Program files but not inside.

The voice capture suggestion you gave didn't work. Same error msg as before. As I said, and I am sure it is significant, I get complaints that I have insufficient graphics power, which is not true but is apparently true as far as the BTS program is concerned. I should say I am not getting any error msg from Seven that my graphics card is misbehaving.

XML files. There is just too much gobbledegook to write down BUT the files which appear
to be affected are the XML/GlobalTypes.XML, the CUXML Load Utility and the TerrainInfos XML. These files lie at the heart of the complaining gobbledegook.

There is also a complaint that the 'puter is allocating zero memory or less. Whatever that means!

It seems to me that BTS is unhappy with my setup but is the fault of that my setup or BTS? I re-iterate I have tried a few turns of the absolutely basic Civ IV without the Warlords and BTS mods and that seems to work.

If you could tell me a way of capturing the error msgs I would be happy to oblige but the error msgs themselves seem to preclude anything but using CTRL-ALT-DELETE to get rid of them.

When you installed the game and patches, did you let the CD autorun or did you right-click on the setup files and select run as administrator?

When you installed the 3.19 patch did you use the in-game updater or did you download and install the patch outside of the game?

You will get both the voice capture device and the min spec warning messages with Win 7, these you turn off in your ini file (The J gave the instructions for one, Mondalino for HideMinSpecWarning). Where is your .ini file located? It is usually located in the My Games folder with Win 7, make sure that you change the BTS (rather than vanilla or Warlords) one and that it is .ini not .ini.bak. Check that the changes are saving and are not getting reset.

Furiey, thank you for your interest.

I installed Civ IV with autorun. Then I updated using the updated BTS 3.19 as a file I keep in a patch folder. I had downloaded the BTS update previously.

Please tell me what you mean by the "HideMinSpecWarning"?

I should note that I changed the "Enable voice over IP capture and playback
EnableVoice = 0", as advised, and I still got an voice disabled error msg.

I am certainly willing to try a new installation procedure, as long as it doesn't compromise my OS.

I should re-iterate that the other error msg I got, apart from relating to the XML ones, was about lacking graphics power so the game wasn't locking up to my full resources.

Apart from the fact that I now have MS Seven, I am wondering whether my new graphics card and the I.7 are causing problems?

PS. Just checked my new graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 5700. I used MS to check if I had the latest Direct X drivers and as far as I know I do.

I run civ on (amoungst other things) an i7 with W7 x64 and an ATI 5800 series card. I got both the voice capture message and the message that my system was below the minimum specs. The line to change in the .ini file to get rid of that one is:

; Don't show minimum specification warnings
HideMinSpecWarning = 1

The voice capture thing should have worked. Where is your BTS Civilization4.ini file located? Mine is in Documents>My Games>Beyond the Sword.

Did you change the default install location when you installed or did you let it put the game where it wanted to?

The settings to enable logging of error messages are found in your BTS .ini file again. There's a whole load of them nearly at the end of the .ini file, change those that enable various types of logs from 0 to 1 to enable the logging.

Thank you for responding, Furiey.

"; Don't show minimum specification warnings
HideMinSpecWarning = 1"

Should I delete this line, then, or what? Or change the 1 to 0?

Yes, I let the autorun decide where to install the game. How should I change that?

"There's a whole load of them nearly at the end of the .ini file, change those that enable various types of logs from 0 to 1 to enable the logging."

Please be more specific. Change them to 0?
