capture settler but get a worker instead?

twice while invading Pacal i saw him trying to get a settler out escorted by a single unit.

i attacked the unit and killed it.. but when i look it's not a settler anymore, its a worker.

what gives?

This has happened to me on occasion. Civ 4's apparently coded that way to prevent settlers of one nation from being captured and used to settle by another civilization - that's the way it was explained to me in another thread.

The confusing issue to mean is remembering if earlier versions of Civ were different and I think some unpatched ones may have been (or still are?). It's difficult to recall which Civ version it was though.

in Civ4 at least it was never possible to capture a settler - they always converted to workers

In Civ 3, you got two workers for capturing a settler.
