Foreign Trade Routes, with all the wonders and buildings that increase foreign trade route yields are amazing.
With the civic that gives you a lot of hammers and food based on trade route yield, you can easily give your cities a decent early game boost to production, when 10 extra hammers actually means something.
And later on in the game, even without the civics changes, you can give a massive bonus to your cities science through commerce.
Easily over 100 science per city with how many trade routes and cities you can get.
100 multiplies fast with all the science bonuses.
One of the only ways to not take 12 turns to research tech in the modern era on Marathon speed.
