CBS Producer Fired for Interrupting CSI with Breaking News

I guess my point was not that I was surprised that the producer was fired based on violating company policy--if the company saw such a violation as so egregious, then they are totally right to fire him. But how did they decide it was such an egregious error? It was the number of complaints received! That is the issue I take with this situation. The number of people complaining about a weekly television show being interrupted for such important news just seems odd to me.

What is the relevance of Yassar Arafat dying that can't wait 3 minutes (or use the freaking ticker!?), on a news program that will save the story until the end of that hour program for viewer retention purposes?

He was trying to pump ratings, ignored the company policy of doing it, and ended up pissing off viewership instead.

Theres nothing virtuous or important about informing the CSI watching public about Yassar Arafat. It has no immediate effect on their lifes (if any ever), and was no more important then the water pipe story that probably preceded it on the station news hour.

If this was the case, people would have been calling in to praise the man for informing them. Evidentally they were not, and their calling was a direct result of the individual foolishly ignoring company policy in this instance.

I would have been very mad at the cut away, but this was CSI:NY which, as has already been established by others here, is the worst of the CSI's. (by a wide margin)
