Hail citizens of CDZland!

The Sirian people extend you our warmest greetings. Our exploration vessel Voyager spotted a galley flying your flag in the eastern reaches of the known world near the Kingdom of Merlot, and hurried the news to our high council. The entire Sirian nation rejoices at our meeting.

We hope our message finds the CDZland Kleptocracy prospering. Our friends the AMAZON, who reside to the north of your vessel’s current location, and the Quatronian people have impressed us with tales of your fair people and their honorable nature. We therefore would like to offer any vessels of CDZland safe harbor within our open Sirian borders, and their crews the hospitality of the Sirian people.

We are currently organizing our high council to send a more formal greeting, for we feel we have much to discuss, and we hope to bring our two great nations closer together. We have heard rumors that you have been admitted into the ETTA trade pact. Once we have confirmed this through official diplomatic channels, we will, of course, happily honor the conditions of the treaty and make our technological knowledge available to you. Please feel free to send all diplomatic correspondence to sirius.mtdg@gmail.com. I will be serving, at least temporarily, as the diplomatic liaison between our great empires. We look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully yours,

Trystero, humble servant of the Sirian Empire

Hail CDZland,

This is just a brief note to pass along some pertinent information our scouts obtained. Our scouting vessel, Voyager, is south of the Kingdom of Merlot, and we believe you reside on the other side of this arm of the great star. We therefore wanted to warn you that Voyager has spotted the cultural border of a barbarian city on this landmass. Since you might have, or might be planning to send your explorers there, we wanted to warn you of this development. We hope all is well in CDZland.

Respectfully,

Trystero, Sirian diplomat

Greetings Trystero,

The people of the CDZ are glad to finally meet the Sirian people. It is also nice to have now met all the members of the alliance as this will make communication a lot easier.

We have a number of resources available to trade, although at the current time we have not been able to establish trading routes. When that does happen we have crabs, gold and sugar to trade.

We look forward to a long lasting and productive friendship

Regards,
Robi, Team CDZ

From us to AMAZON, QUATRONIA, and CDZ:
Sent: Wednesday, July 21st, 08:16 (GMT)

Greetings fellow ETTT members.

Now that we have all finally met each other, it seems sensible to co-ordinate our technology plans into the future.

Our current understanding is:
Sirius: Code of Laws
Amazon: Monarchy
Quatronia: Calendar?
CDZ: Metal Casting

There are many benefits to getting Astronomy on this map, so it is our suggestion to tech towards it as quickly as possible. This means there should always be one team should be researching one of:
Metal Casting->Machinery->Optics->Astronomy. Another team can get the cheaper techs of Compass and Calendar in parallel (both fairly beneficial techs on their own). It also seems wise to pursue Civil Service soon for the bonus Beaurocracy can provide to all of our research rates.

In principle it shouldn't matter which team researches which techs, if we're all sharing them. Although it may be wise for the teams with faster research rates to look after the Astronomy beeline and the key economy techs such as Civil Service which will speed up everyone's research.

What other technologies do people think are important?

One final issue; Our understanding is that it is best to transfer techs as gifts rather than damnds or trades, to avoid making it clear who is trading based on who is logged in when the teams' scores increase. It should therefore be the researching team's responsibility to push out the techs as they discover them. Now that all members have made contact this should not be a problem in the future.

The likelihood of disguising what's going on is low, but for the moment in particular we have not even made contact with Mavericks, so it is unlikely they know all of what's going on. It is better to keep them in the dark for as long as possible.

With all that in mind, we would greatly appreciate it if the next team to log on could offer us Iron Working in game. It seems to have been lost in the shuffle with all the techs swapping back and forth.

Best regards,
Irgy, on behalf of team Sirius

Team CDZ agrees with the proposition put forward by Irgy to get to Astronomy as quickly as possible.

Also we have finished Metal Casting and have started on Machinary.

From us to ETTA:

Fellow ETTA members,

Tech update: This seems like a good time to coordinate our activities. We anticipate completing Civil Service next turn. We have not decided what technology it would be best to pursue next. Given some of the military entanglements, we were considering Feudalism, but Paper is also an option once Theology is complete.

Mavericks situation: We were contacted by Mavericks ~10 turns ago, when their work boat entered our territory. At the time, they stated it would soon be followed by a trireme. Since we had no vessel that could contend with a trireme and our borders had not expanded enough to prevent the work boat’s passage, we let it pass. However, we have since seen no sign of this other vessel. It’s possible it turned around when we let their work boat through, or that they were bluffing about its presence. Regardless, their work boat took a detour into the channel leading to the mainland’s center. It re-emerged a few turns ago, and is just now leaving our territory. We will alert you if we see a Mavericks trireme, but it looks like Amazon could halt the work boats progress by refusing to open borders.

Resources: We are currently exploring and settling the mainland arm between ourselves and Mavericks. This arm has a plains tip with stone, pigs, copper, and incense resources. Mavericks may have settled a city here as well, as they claim to have settled near copper, but we haven't seen their cultural borders. We'd expect to be able to see them but we haven't fully explored the continent yet. The arm between Amazon and us appears to have a desert tip with marble, bananas, horses, and ivory resources.

Greetings fellow ETTA members,

Team CDZ will we finishing Machinary in a couple of turns. We were planning to do Feudalism but if Sirus wishes to take this task on then we will need some feedback so we don't end up doubling up on a tech.

From us to the ETTA:
Sent: Monday, 23rd August, 04:41 (GMT)

Fellow ETTA members,

Based on feedback from other teams, we will pursue Paper next to enable map trading. This is not necessarily a high priority for us, but other members seem to have the immediate tech needs covered. Our current understanding of the research plans are:

Sirius: Paper
Amazon: Theology > Construction
Quatronia: HBR (partial) > Optics
CDZ: Machinery > Feudalism

We are always open to discussions of alternatives.

Quatronia alerted us to a Holken at the eastern end of the arm between us and Mavericks. Our settlement on this arm has been under constant barb attack, so we have not been able to fully scout this arm. We are even uncertain of the location of the Mavericks city. The only unit we have nearby is a wounded archer, which is far enough away that it is doubtful it could prevent the Merlot unit from contacting Mavericks, and is likely to be ineffective. If the Holken takes an indirect route (i.e. it heads north) we could intercept it with an axeman.

Sincerely,

Trystero, Team Sirius

This is just a brief note to let you know we expect to finish researching Paper in the next turn, and would like to exchange maps with you. Would you be open to such a trade?

Sent: Sunday, 12th September, 22:23 (GMT)

Fellow ETTA members,

We have completed our research of Paper, and have distributed it to the ETTA. We think it would be the best use of our research capabilities if we work on Astronomy as soon as Optics is available. We will need to accumulate some gold to do so, and are planning to put minimal beakers into Philosophy while we wait for Optics.

We would like to know if the rest of the ETTA agrees with this course of action, and what the others were planning to research.

That sounds good. CDZ has already begun Music however so it would be advisable that you switch following Drama to avoid wasting beakers.

To keep everyone up to date, after a few private discussions with Quattronia (i forgot to CC people in and CFC does not have a respond to all). CDZ is well on its way to Music and as far as I am aware Quattronia is finishing off HBR or Feudalism if Sommerswerds team doesn't take over it, though I am unsure if they've chosen to finish Drama.

CDZ would like to take the opportunity to apologise for the lack of communication, as expressed to differing people at various times a lot of us have been caught up with affairs outside of the game (hence the revolving door of turnplayers recently).

Unless there are any objections CDZ was planning on following the path towards Nationalism.

I.e. Drama, (if Quattronia are not finishing researching it) Philosophy, Nationalism.

Such an extensive time to research these will allow us to avoid mistakes again should RL events re-occur.

Sommerswerd,

You guys will be teching Feudalism? I remember that CDZ said they would be teching Feudalism after Machinery. But then instead of doing that they seem to have gone Aesthetics-> Literature. Could all the teams clarify their tech plans so we are all on the same page?

Here is my understanding so far:

Quatronia: Drama (2 turns)-> Music (6 Turns)
Sirius: Astronomy
Amazons: Construction-> ?
CDZ: ?

To the members of the ETTT,

As everyone is aware a problem has developed on the peninsula between Quatronia and CDZ. The Amazon nation has graciously taken time to propose some solutions and we at the CDZ welcome their efforts to bring about a resolution to the current situation. However, we must stress that, barring divine intervention, any and all decisions regarding the welfare of the CDZ Kleptocracy will be made by its citizens. Thus any form, other than said divine intervention, of binding judgement by a third party will not be acceptable.

While the CDZ accept the general direction of Amazon’s proposal is a positive one we feel that the history of the matter is important to consider, as only when the situation is viewed in context will we find a long lasting solution that acceptable to everyone.

The facts of the matter are we settled two cities on the peninsula in question, Spamville and Or here before Quatronia has any cities. Both of these are on the half of the peninsula closest to our island. We had planned a third city between the two and then to move on to the other peninsula.

However Quatronia decided to aggressively settle next to Spamville with the cities of Resonance and Asymptote. The usefulness of either of these cities apart from culturally crowding Spamville is marginal at best. Quatronia specifically ignored settling better land that was closer to them, clearly instigating the current situation between two teams that should be behaving as allies, by settling extremely agressively towards one of our cities.

Now it is important to note that up to this point at no time had Quatronia sought to discuss the settlement of our common peninsula, nor did they ever express disappointment at not having the stone. They never asked if we would be willing to come to any arrangements with regards to trading the stone to them. All of these actions which one would expect from an ally were never explored by them. So in response to their aggressive settling against Spamville we settled ereh rO, Quatronia then settled Pulsar Plateau.

It was only sometime after this that they came to us and ridiculously demanded we exchanged ereh rO for a settler they would gift us in return, because ereh Or was "in their sphere of influence", whilst grossly overlooking the fact that the first city they settled on the peninsula was "in CDZ's sphere of influence". This we found inadequate compensation for our city so they went ahead and settled Cygous. And now there is the further matter of researching Music, which Quatronia decided to research after we announced we are doing it.

When looking back through the event from the beginning we believe it is clear that it was never Quatronia’s intention to negotiate or find some agreement, their intention was to take whatever they could, however they could. Overall this can only be viewed as appalling behaviour towards a nation that is its ally. If a solution is to be found then it must take into account Quatronia’s role in instigating and the exacerbating the problem we have on our hands today.

After the conclusion of this unfortunate, Quattronia-instigated incident, we hope to continue our positive contribution to the ETTT, and collectively work towards a positive conclusion of the pacification of all non-ETTT civilizations in the world.

Best regards,
The Citizens of the CDZ Kleptocracy

Dear members of the ETTT,

your messages deserve a longer answer than this, the people of the CDZ like to give you a quick answer including the main points, hopefully there is time to draft a longer answer later.

Probably most of the misunderstandings occured because the people of CDZ assumed that the value of strategic locations would be based on our common technological level and expertise in the ETTT. We would like to apologise for setting our strategic levels on other teams. If you keep this in mind, you might understand, why the people of CDZ chose to settle 'ereh rO'. It was not really meant as a retaliation, but more like: "Hey, if they'd rather settle close to our cities giving us cultural pressure and ignoring the clearly better spot, then why not settle it ourselves while it's still free." Our city location experts still can't understand why Quatronia settled those two spots first, but it was our fault assuming that location values could be universally applied.

But Quatronia showed us once again that we shouldn't apply our standards on them. Accusing an ally of getting money from a common enemy is one of the worst things you can do, especially as the answer is available to their Intelligence Department. The CDZ people are still shocked. But as a quick answer to all those that obviously abolished their Intelligence Department: The heroic CDZ forces were able to free innocent people in the city of Bulgar from their Barbarian oppressors.

The CDZ people never decided on how to use the 'gun' (as Amazon liked to call it), the CDZ people would only clearly be relieved if they see that the 'gun' is not in the hands of someone who clearly showed that he likes to use culture as a weapon against us before. We do not wish to see any further escalation therefore we pledge not to use a cultural bomb on the "hoag".

The CDZ people like to sort these things out for the prosperity of the ETTT as well, therefore not settling on that peninsula while looking for an agreement is perfectly fine.

Greetings,
the CDZ Kleptocracy

Hello ETTT,

sorry for the rather late information, but due to the downtime and reloads of the game etc. it seems that no one has send an update on our technology path.
CDZ is currently researching Philosophy, I hope there is no collision to one of the other members.

we are researching Divine Right, not at full speed, as some units need some upgrades.
We will very likely be able to capture some Merlot city (hopefully cities) soon, so this war should be a success for the ETTT not too far in the future.

Hi all,

I'm currently the turn player for Team CDZ. Sorry, I don't have the habbit of comming here as often as I should.

After a quick poll, CDZ thinks Cannons are the way to go.

It looks as there has been another screwup since CDZ will have liberalism in 3 turns (2 if we hurry) . I have just switched to Military Tradition that no one seems to be working on. ( And it looks as if it is the only one we can do without any overlaping.)

I'll reconnect often.

From us to CDZ:

Greetings to team CDZ from the distant shores of Sirius.

Being on opposite sides of the map, we've had little to discuss so far this game. However, recent victories against Mavericks and Merlot are bringing all of us closer together. We would like to open some more detailed discussion with a proposal for you.

As you know, Mavericks and Merlot are now confined to the home islands, and with the recent invention of Rifles and the rumours of Cannons to come in the near future it is hopefully only a matter of time before they can be removed from consideration once and for all. When this occurs, the current arrangement of co-operation between what will be the four remaining teams will have come to a natural end. So it is time to start planning how the diplomatic layout will look once this occurs.

Of the four teams in the ETTT, the one which stands out as the lowest contributor, and least co-operative, is Quatronia. It appears you have had difficulty dealing with them and a fair degree of conflict yourselves. We have also found them un-cooperative, failing entirely to respond to our attempts to better co-ordinate in the war against Mavericks, resulting in many lost lives on both sides. Although recently more productive, they have on the whole contributed the least to the ETTT in terms of technology, prefering instead to save cash for a selfish warrior->maceman upgrade plan. They are also an easy target by way of being in a fairly weak position.

So, we write to ask you, were we to propose to remove Quatronia from the ETTT, would we have your support? You have as much if not more to gain from this as us, giving you an opportunity to end the pointless culture war on your shared spoke by military means.

This would leave three teams in the game. Ourselves, yourselves, and Amazon. Currently our understanding is that you have an NAP with Amazon, and it is likely of no surprise to you that we have an NAP with them ourselves. This could leave Amazon in something of a superior position by being able to choose which of us to side with while at less risk of being the solitary partner themselves. In order to avoid this, I think it is important for the two of us to start to strengthen our ties. Including potentially even an NAP to complete the symmetry going into the three team end game.

We can assure you that this is a unique offer, in the sense that we are not throwing suggestions such as this around to every team. We have heard only good things about the integrity of CDZ members, and hope that extends to at least treating the suggestions we have made here with the proper degree of confidentiality even if you are not interested in our proposals. We are eager to hear your thoughts on the subjects.

Best wishes,
Irgy, on behalf of Team Sirius
