Hey guys, I'd like to recommend a game I found on Steam a while back. It's called Age of Chivalry, and it's a medieval combat game (complete with longbows, catapults, swordsmen, etc). It's a free mod requiring the Source engine, so if you have any Source games (which I'm sure you all do ;)), it's definitely worth a try.

tried it, got quickly bored with it. although, seeing 5 archers run away from you when you are a knight with a warhammer and you crush their skulls one by one, it's good. /d

Age of Chivalry is meh. Mount&Blade is better, and will soon have it's own multiplayer later this year ^_^

Nvidia GeForce 8500GT. Not the best, but the 8800's were all out and I just needed a new graphics card to help fix the problems that halted my Rome AAR. It's all fixed up now, but it's definitely time for a new card.

Ah yes, the 8500, not as bad as the 8400 and not as good as the 7800. Poor Kan. The 8800s rock.

It still is. I play all my games maxed out including Crysis, Far Cry 2, Clear Sky, Empire Total War demo (which is less optimised than the full game from what I've read), Bioshock, Left 4 Dead ,etc etc. The 9800s are absically the same too. No point in shelling out over twice as much for a 280.

260+ is the best idea for a new pc now imho. Its plenty powerful, and even at 1920x1200 its usable.

I've had my ATI Radeon HD 2900 for 18 months and I'm still maxing out games. I don't often see people talking about ATI. Every time I get a computer I seem to switch back from ATI to Geforce back to ATI back to Geforce. I dunno.
Well its based on the resolutions you play at. Just for fun, I downclocked my GTX260+ to where a 8800GT would be (considering number of shaders of course) and tried Company of Heroes. I cant even come close to maxing it out. Lags pretty bad on 1680x1050.

1600x1200 is a comparable resolution.
Widescreen != high resolution.

How large of a moniter do you have to have to get that resolution? ANd do they even SELL proper square moniters that are larger than 19"?

I could probably get that res on a 19" but there'd be no reason to as it would look rather small.

UXGA is a pretty standard resolution for larger square monitors, but the problem is space utilization. A lot of the reason for a large monitor is horizontal space. Larger monitors are also more useful in media pc's. Therefore, widescreen is better.

I don't see why people stick to 4:3 monitors anymore really. Games, even older ones, look fine on widescreens, even if they do not support the resolution. There are usually resolutions that they do support that are close enough that you dont notice the stretching. And most, if not all new games support either windowed mode or widescreen resolutions.

Because there's nothing wrong with a 4:3 moniter and I don't want to shell out $200+ for a new moniter?

Besides not being able to afford it and I'm not sure if there's room on my desk. ANd photobucket limits pictures to 2 megabytes or 1024x768. (imageshack sucks). And I'm pretty sure my vision is more square shaped than really widescreen, and I like to keep tabs on threats from above and below.

Your vision is very widescreen. Look at how far your peripheral vision can see, and how far you can see above and below without turning your head. Widescreen is more natural for the human eye.

Now, im not saying you need to run out and get a new widescreen now, but when/if you buy a new monitor, a widescreen would probably be the way to go.

if you dont have room on your desk, get a 15$ wall/desk mount and put it in such a way that there is.

Do most games (old games that weren't aware of the coming of widescreen) and new games that weren't made for wide-screen usually just stay in their 4:3 mode and leave two vertical black bands on each side, or do they stretch to fill the whole screen? The latter would suck.

It seems I often see people complaining about new games using cheap tricks to fill their widescreen instead of being actual widescreen.

(You're pretty much right about how human vision is more adapted for widescreen though).

Games that don't support widescreen are stretched, but I think there may be a way to fix it.

I think the worst kind of widescreen support is when they take away from the vertical, which can affect things like buttons on the bottom of the screen being cut off.

It depends on the monitor and GPU actually I think. Some monitors may be able to just leave it in its native resolution, not stretching it, and some GPU's may be able to do the same.

sure I'm up for it provided I'm awake first

I tend to wake up about 1 pm Eastern time so.... yeah :p
