CFC TG1: Calling All Settler, Chieftain, and Warlord Players

I'd love if you post your plans for war (if you want to start one in your turnset). Just like at the beginning of the game, we should discuss tactical planning :)

This is one are of the game (oversea invasion) where I have very little experience, so I'm really curious how to go about this.

Thoughts on opening the file: It does look like the Aztecs are the best candidate for first target status. For one thing they own the Angor Wat, which will be a nice bonus. I am not sure if Almaty is all that good as a staging area. Having a lot of units there is likely to aggravate Songhai. Can we assure them we are peaceful when they complain and then dodge off towards the Aztecs? How devious of us.

I like Navigation as a choice if we have gone military. Frigates are a big help for keeping the seaways clear for our invasion force. They do need iron. I can settle to pick up the iron deposit north of Si Satchanalai for 2 iron. Or, I can send a settler to Lhasa Island for two iron deposits, one of which is 6 iron. That is very tempting.

For tech, I want to work towards the next big military step, which I consider to be either Rifles or Cavalry. Cannons are good too. Any preferences? I lean toward Rifles.

I will play tomorrow unless they throw an unbirthday party for me. (Hey, it could happen!)

Your post must have come in while I was composing mine. I don't think we are quite ready for invasion in my turnset. I think we need to get a few more units in place and some intstructure together. But it is coming real soon, yes. As I play, I will look more at the lay of the land and so forth. I will gladly use that to start invasion plan discussions.

Sindri said that she sent a great merchant to Stockholm. If you do the trade mission, you can then easily ally with that city state, which will give us two iron...then we can upgrade our triremes to frigates!

Should the war start in this turnset? I think we should rather attack sooner than later. We are stronger than the aztecs, they don't have as advanced units yet. If we delay, we might really have to wait until rifles. Btw. don't forget that if we ally with Almaty, we can use their territory to upgrade units (I'm not saying we should ally with Almaty, it was just an idea...and it might be helpful). Sindri made a declaration of friendship with the Songhai. I think it won't matter now if we move our units near their borders. And if they ask us to remove them...just say you will do so. We will probably have to backstab them anyway now because of the DOF.

I'll have a look at the save later today and then post my thoughts.

I once backstabbed someone and completely destroyed his sorry ass's army's... What happened is that EVERYONE suddenly hated me and now I am in the middle of a hostile continent >.<

Luckely, you guys don't have that in the middle of awww-hell issue and seeing you're going for a military victory (Right?) I'd say it's worth it to attack them asap.

Family stuff did intervene. War plans to be posted at first opportunity.

While dreaming of a life consisting of peaceful expansion and riches, the great Ceasar is confronted with the news that his citizens have all turned into bloodthirsty barbarians and demand War. Not liking the evil glint in the eyes of his assassination prone royal guards, he agrees.

We have 4 Knights and 2 Longswords and 2 Ballistas. There is another Knight in 3 turns. I have not heard of anyone with ships or troops on the water, so we are going to empty the cities and send them off to invasion. Some Pikemen will be queued up just to get the homeland defenses back up in case somebody out there does get frisky. A few defenders and our road system should help keep us safe.

A Caravel heads to the Aztecs and scouts what units it can see especially naval units. The other Caravel explores our west coast keeping an eye out for barbarians trying to harass our embarked troops. All the troops are headed to Almaty for staging and arranging. We are looking for a wall of units backed by Ballistas. Frigates and the defensive Caravel follow the troops across the ocean. Naval units arrange themselves several hexes away from Texcoco to avoid triggering closeness warnings.

When arranged, (or triggered by Aztec reaction), the wall of units comes down from Almaty at the pace of the Ballistas. They are looking for loose troops to eliminate. Meanwhile, our might Navy is making sure the seas are clear and pelting Texcoco with everything they have. Texcoco may damage one ship, (to my observation, the city tends to pick on one unit that is weakened), but a seriously damaged ship can duck into Almaty for repairs. (See diplomacy note below.) The navy is also looking to provide damage or elimination of ranged units as opportunity arises. When Texcoco is at minimum, one unit dashes out and takes the city, or if the whole wall makes it there, the city falls to many units. Retreat of a damaged unit is always a priority if there is any chance to lose it.

You can refine this with a unit hiding in the water out of range of Texcoco that can swoop in, land, live through one possible barrage from the city, and then provide the killing blow. Allowing for this would provide a backup plan in case the wall of units runs into stiff resistance.

When Texccoco falls, we heal and edge ballistas toward Tenochtitlan. We want to take it before he sues for peace. If we deny a peace treaty to go forward and take the Capitol, people will hate us. They are going to hate us sooner or later, but it's worth avoiding if we can. I also want to take Tlatelolco for the 6 iron there. Everything else can be razed as far as I am concerned.

Diplomatically, we will do the trade mission with Stockholm. We can take 500 Gold and make Sockholm our new ally and get their food and 2 iron. We can take 750 gold and make Almaty our new ally and get their 2 iron. This will also get us a random chance per turn to get a unit from Almaty that has the tremendous advantage of being on the right continent as well as a pace for injured units to hide behind the barrage capacity of Almaty itself as war ally. This may impact our ability for upgrading Frigates, but we are about to enter a Golden Age and will have whatever it takes.

These are my plans. Let me know what you think, you bloodthirsty citizens of Rome.

No input? I expected some discussion. I will wait til this evening, then proceed.

I think your strategy sounds spot on. A new source of iron is much needed, but otherwise I don't think there's much to gain by keeping Monty's cities. Go ahead and annihilate!

I'm sorry, was kind of distracted over the last days..just now read the war plans. Sounds good overall! I don't think we have to worry much about diplomatic problems at first, since the aztects weren't friendly with anyone last I checked.

From the screens it looks like we'll have to face swords and horses, so I don't think we will have much trouble. I'll post another approach this evening (hope I don't get distracted again  ) for discussion, if you haven't started your turnset then yet.

Ok here we go. The one thing I don't like about attacking from the north is that we won't be able to use both of our ballistas to attack the city of Texcoco (since there's a hill in the way). I've looked at attacking Tlatelco first instead, from the sea:

B = Ballista, K = Knight, L = Longswordman

Setting up this way should ensure that our ballistas don't get destroyed by counterattacks before they're even set up. Two of our knights can also stay out of fire range until they are ready to attack.

If we attack from the north, we might declare first and then wait for Monty to send everything he has against us, then march towards the cities. But tbh, I don't think he has much at all (seeing that with such few units we are the number one in military!). So a direct attack from the sea should be successful too.

What do you think?

Okay, we are headed for Tletelolco via sea invasion. I will try and do most of my siege via navy, though. We'll see. We will keep Tletelolco for the iron and the coastal access/beachhead, and keep Tenochtitlan because we have to. Your invasion diagram is very much how I have done some invasions, so I am very comfortable with that.

Turn 201: WE enter a Golden Age for 10 turns! We are making 137 Gold per turn. Antium finishes a Workshop. With Golden Age, new Workshop and the bonus from Rome, a new Barracks takes 3 turns. Antium starts Barracks. Open Borders with Darius ends. We complete our trade mission with Stockholm for 30 influence and 500 Gold. I spend the 500 Gold to buy Stockholm's alliance. I decide we don't need Almaty's alliance if we are taking the Southern route.

After some looking at paths, if we are invading Tletelolco then the fastest way there is south of America. A good initial rally point for a set of embarked troops is the bay off of Hamburg. All land units begin traveling to Hamburg. One Caravel heads to Tletelolco and the other to Hamburg. We should be allies for 49 turns.

202: We finish Navigation. I select Gunpowder in 5 turns. Ragusa wants us to take out Budapest. Stockholm wants furs. Songhai and America sign a Research Agreement. Our Luxury deals end with Darius and Washington. Spices from Stoclholm puts a couple city into We love the King bonus. Cumae finishes a Knight which heads for Hamburg. Cumae starts a Pikeman. Rome finishes Barracks and starts Pikeman. I upgrade the two Triremes to Frigates. It was 210 Gold each, less than I feared.

203 All units are embarked off of Hamburg with a Caravel escort. Frigates are headed from the East coast and should get to Aztec lands first. Exploring is showing more and more Aztec territory. Antium finishes Barracks and starts a Pikeman. That's three Pikes in progress. I feel better about having a militarily naked continent.

204 Darius completes the Forbidden Palace. Luxury deal with Askia ends. We are down to 2 happy. The invasion fleet is in motion.

205 Neapolis finishes a Workshop and starts a Knight to add to the invasion force. Rome finshes a Pikeman which is set to defend Rome. We are at 1 happy. Rome starts Circus Maximus.

206 We research Gunpowder. I set research to Metallurgy. We are at -1 happy. I look at some diplomatic options. I figure if we are using Aztec as a beach-head then either Darius or Askia is next. America is friendly with us. We are going to stay friends for a while, then. I trade Silver for Gold with Washington. We are at 4 happy.

The fleet is still in motion. One of my self entertainments is to set a fleet like this to a set of rendezvous points short of the actual target. For several turns, at the end of the turn, I focus on the fleet and hit the next turn button and all the ships move at once. I am easily amused.

207 Montezuma built the Hagia Sophia. The first Caravel makes it to Tlatelolco. No units visible, but there is a general in the city. Does that help the city in any way?

208 The Caravel finds a Knight in Texcoco! And a Settler. Ravenna starts a Barracks. Cumae starts a Circus. Frigates make it to Tlatelolco and go to hide in the ocean and look non-threatening.

209 Antium finishes Pikeman, who heads to Berlin to garrison, and starts Knight. Antium is starving. I set Antium to default focus and then force one citizen to increase production and keep a throttle on growth.

210 Lhasa wants a Great Merchant. Everybody wants something. Watch the pretty ships move as the tpwards the southern shores of America. This is a big world! We are down to 2 happy.

211 1 happy. Our Golden Age has ended. We have 2743 Gold.

212 0 happy. A barb camp is there by Cumae. Either it has been there a while or I missed it appearing. They had the affrontery to reach out and capture a worker. A Pikeman in Cumae has killed the barb Warrior, recaptured our Worker, and is headed to clear the camp. By the way, our workers are running out of tiles to improve.

213 0 happy. We get Chemistry from our Research Agreement with Washington.

214 Cumae finishes Circus. 2 happy. Cumae starts Barracks. While passing New York, the fleet sees a Great General enter and camp in the City. The Archer/Scout is swimming toward America. I propose signing Open Borders with America and mapping out their lands. Otherwise, the Archer is hiding from the Aztecs while dreaming of being promoted to a Rifle someday.

215 Ravenna finishes Barracks Ravenna starts Knight. The fleet is rounding past Chicago. This overseas trip is a long one. One of the reasons I have cued up some more military is to get ahead of the lag in getting units to the other continent. If someone can determine whether it is shorter from Rome to Aztecia than from our west coast, that might shave off a turn or two. In other circumstance, I would have picked on America as closest transcontinental target and kept the overseas commute shorter.

The scouting Caravel has been going up and down the west coast of Aztec lands. The only units we have seen are the Knight and General noted earlier, wandering from city to city. This is a good sign.

We have 3004 gold in the bank. I suggest we buy alliance from Rio de Janeiro for Ivory and food. Otherwise, I was saving up for Rifle upgrades. Now that we have Chemistry, we can do Cannons, too.

I really like the look of that fleet in the sea. =)

From what you've seen it sounds like we shouldn't have too much problems with conquering the Aztecs.

Ok this is what I'll do in my turnset:

- Tech: Rifling -> Fertilizer -> Dynamite (artillery!). Fertilizer is a required in-between tech, and has the nice side effect of really increasing our food production.

- Cities: set production focus during war preparations. This will shave off a few turns in in most cities. Next production goals? Once the knights have finished, I'll probably start building more food buildings. Remember, food = science. I'll also see that I set up a few more cannons (with the goal of upgrading them to artillery...good thing cannons don't need iron anymore :)

- Workers: I'll try to optimize our road network a bit if I see workers idling. I'd like to keep our workers around until railroads, after building all the railroads I usually delete most workers except for one or two (which remain to do repairs etc).

- Allies: I agree getting more city state allies is a good idea (we didn't get Patronage for nothing! ;) iirc Rio is hostile tho, so maybe I'll go for another city state.

As for the major civs: I'm most worried about Washington currently. I do not want to fight our wars while he keeps building up and teching peacefully. Maybe we could bribe him into some more wars? I'll look into that opportunity.

If there's no objection I'll start some time later today.

Sounds good. I was wondering what your approach to the workers would be. Anything you can do to blunt America's progress will be very interesting. If I felt braver I would hit them as first target to bring them down to size. But it is my understanding that if we have committed to going for a military victory, we need to keep that ball rolling and move from one invasion to another as continuously as possible. If we do it right, we end up with a really huge invasion force outside America as our last victim, knowing we only need to take the city of Washington to win, not the whole empire.
