Vivat Sobieski!
I was playing RTR recently (as Macedon), and I chose the short game version. As I'm busy pushing East through Anatolia and expanding Westward through Illyria, I get the pop-up message that I am near defeat (as another faction is about to achieve it's objectives). Then I remembered (incorrectly) that I was to capture Thrace. After a few turns of brutal battles, in which I rashly through away many units so as to quickly capture their cities, I finally checked the objectives for Macedon: Destroy or outlast the Bactrians.

The BACTRIANS!?!?!?!?!?! After taking over nearly all of Thrace in the span of about 5 turns, I find out it is all for naught. The closest I am to Bactria is near the Eastern border of Modern day Turkey. I gave up my quest to achieve victory, now I will settle for exterminating the capital of my current ally, Rome (I have the proverbial boot of Italy under my control, and also Syracuse and also Aquileia in NW Illyria). So while the Romans have all but one massive army away fighting the Gauls and Germans, I will launch a massive invasion from the South that will snap their backs in two.

Now, On Topic: Having Bactria as the (or one of the) short game objective(s) for Macedon is insane. You either have to march through Sarmation territory (no roads, mainly wilderness) or fight your way through the Seleucid Empire. Either way, you are almost doomed to failure unless you have a massive army right away and land it on the far side of the Black Sea and run like hell for Bactria.

I think that they should set the objectives for the Macedonians as: Destroy or outlast the Illyrians, Thracians and Greek City States.

Anyone else have some pet peeves about the objectives of the short game objectives in RTR?

I don't understand, wouldn't "Outlast the Bactrians" mean that you have to be alive when they are not? That would mean that, if you were about to fail your objectives, then you were about to die (thus not outliving Bactria), but you obviously were not about to die.
This makes the exact opposite of sense to me.
If another faction achieves it's objectives before you defeat or outlast the Bactrians, you still lose. As the other faction achieved its mission first.

Does RTR work off of vanilla victory triggers? Because I know EB doesn't....it's quite obvious that the Arverni don't really care about the Sauromatae, for example. I can see why the Maks would care about Baktria, but, that doesn't seem very "short" to me:crazyeye:

I think some of them do, but I would check their site for a definitive answer (rometotalrealism.com).

I can see that also. But it is not short, so that's why I'd like them to change it (even though they said they're done updating it).

"Destroy or Outlast the Bactrians"...short game my a$$.

Spoiler :
Though I have now turned the tides and they have 1 city left, with a garrison of about 200 men. And I have a massive Macedonian army right outside of it, with more reinforcements on the way. Their days of existence are very limited.
