Charging a laptop battery

What is better: Plugging in your laptop while you are using it, or completely charing it, using it until it is (almost) flat and then charging it while the laptop is off? Especially in regards with the battery lifetime. I have heard that using the laptop while charging might be bad for the battery, but I don't know if this is true.

Just plug it in when you're by an outlet, use it on battery when you're not by an outlet.

It's best to use it on a full battery with plug-in since it then runs off that wall power and not the battery.
