HI! Just wanted to know what everyone thinks about the lack of a cheat mode in Civ3? I know most of you Civ elite out there never use it but for mere mortals like me the cheat mode was a great way to releive stress by piling up cheaty units outside everyone's cities and kicking their asses. What do you think?

Didnt want a cheat mode and wouldnt use them if they were added.

I never saw the point in the cheat mode. The challenge is the fun for me, and if stuff goes wrong - oh well. I become a fountain of profanity sometimes when the AI cheats, but I refuse to sink to its level.

To quote a Mel Brooks' film: "Cheat mode? We don't need no stinkin' cheat mode!"

I never used it, but without it, how are we going to make scenarios unless this editor has the features of cheat mode as well?

I think the editor is a free standing ap brandon........a different creation environment.

One that would render cheat mode in the game environment un-necessary.

I theenk you should join us elite and learn to play the game, Son!!!:goodjob:

As I said in a previous thread on that topic, I think NO cheat mode is better. Because when you start playing with the cheats, you get bad habits and can't play with cheats off.

I've never really used the cheat mode for a game. I don't know, even though I still kinda suck at the game, I prefer doing things for myself and enjoy the game best in that way. Cheat mode would ruin the challenge for me.

I thought the cheat mode was worth having. After the game, it was always neat to see what the AI was doing. During the game, especially while I was learning it, it was useful for the same purpose. I liked that if I was dominating a game early, I could use the cheat mode to switch sides and play another civ instead of the one I built. If I was trying to wipe another civ off the face of the earth, I've been known to save, turn the cheat mode on, and find out where those last couple of cities are. It was also useful as a tool to help alter the game situation, as another post here suggested; I hope also that a good game editor will replace this.

Maybe Civ III will not really need a cheat mode -- we will have to wait and see.

I've used the cheat mode a time or two. Usually when I was mad because I had a game that was going downhill and I wasn't going to win. So instead of just abandoning it, I would get nukes and wipe my opponents off the face of the earth. It felt pretty darn good. I haven't used it in a long time, though. So I won't really miss cheat mode, but if it was their, I woudn't complain.

I never used the cheat mode during normal gameplay...

But, how are we going to create scenarios without one? Is there going to be a scenario utility provided by Firaxis?

I've been waiting for Civ3 for years. I play Civ1 or SMAC every other day (Civ2 is too hideous visually to tolerate), and always with cheats turned on because I want to have fun.

Well, with Civ1 I'm forced to use a trainer, but...

When I sit down with a computer game, before I even open the package I have researched the cheats. I prefer to treat a game as a toy rather than as a means to boost my fragile ego. It's fun to lay down a stack of nukes in the center of your opponents continent and send them flying. It's fun to grow an empire without worrying over resources, just to watch it develop.

Today, the day before release, I learned that for some foolish reason they've removed the in game cheat mode. I promise you that this will impact sales. My friends all play Civ2/SMAC with cheats on. Often. It's what you do when you're bored and in my peer group. When I relay the news of what I've found, none of us will likely buy Civ3. Firaxis has robbed us of our potential fun because a number of internet blowhards have decried the presence of a built in, comprehensive cheat mode.

Guys, if you don't like the cheat menu, don't use it, but it's wrong to infringe upon the happiness of the casual user with your mousepad machismo.

It's just a game. I don't have any desire whatsoever to be able to beat deity mode without cheating. I would gain nothing and lose weeks of my life trying to do so.

Firaxis, until some in game cheat mode returns via a patch, you've lost a customer. Probably three of my close friends as well, maybe five. How many other groups of friends will write off Civ3 as disappointing because of it? I'm willing to bet more than you think.
