Russian military pilots have described how they created rain clouds to protect Moscow from radioactive fallout after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

Major Aleksei Grushin repeatedly took to the skies above Chernobyl and Belarus and used artillery shells filled with silver iodide to make rain clouds that would "wash out" radioactive particles drifting towards densely populated cities.

More than 4,000 square miles of Belarus were sacrificed to save the Russian capital from the toxic radioactive material.

Yet another conspiracy theory turns out to be true.

Kinda interesting. Did it work?

Imagine that, it would be raining catdogs!

Heh, those pesky Russians.

Chernobyl is a thriving nature reserve now. Not by design though :shifty: Nice idea though.

Russia weathers you?

Good, Belorussians will fight back those Russians.

Pf, I'd take it as an opportunity to boost tourism.

I for one would love to see the ghost town of Pripjať and other deserted towns and villages. It has a kind of "Fallout feel".

It sounds like it needed to be done. But they should have warned the people they were doing it, letting the people be exposed to that much radiation unknowingly was totally irresponsible.

Yeah, there you have the finest examples of mutated species on earth.

Actually not, funnily enough desite the radiation levels, the density of species is high, which would suggest that mutation if it is having an effect, is not a significant one.

Oh thanks Arnie^ I read about it in New scientist, though I would have to fish it out.

Welcome to the Soviet Union, comrade. They informed the public in the Eastern bloc few days after they informed the West.

I've read about mutated plants and lower animals.

Increased radiation is actually good for the evolution ;)

In this case, that is precisely what the scientists are saying. The lack of human influence outweighs by far the small amount of mutation, which it seems is seldom fatal anyway.

Precisely radiation in this case is good for evolution, well at the least for the animals living there.

Sidhe I think Winner meant the radiation caused mutation and that mutation is in itself the evolution he is talking about. I get the impression you mean that the radiation is good for nature because it removes human interference.

Very cool pictures of Chernobyl area.

I must visit the place, it is awesome. Entire city evacuated in just few days. Not a soul anywhere in the town. This is how every Western city would look like after global thermonuclear war or some major pandemic.

I must see it, it is not that far, I just need some money to bribe the local police.

I'll settle for playing Stalker. I'm sure it's exactly the same as the real place. :) Good FPS BTW :sniper: .

It's true that the area is now teeming with life and that's comforting. But killing people in Belarus to save people in Moscow - that's pretty rough. I wonder if Western European Governments were badgering the USSR to do this to protect populations here? I bet they were.

get a S.T.A.L.K.E.R licence and watch out for the amnoralies.
