Chieftain difficulty is annoying me!

Thanks for the tips. I build a fair few wonders, i'll admit, but I often miss some out.

50 turns to go, and still 600 points clear at the top. Pasargadae is constantly having Persian revolts, it's nearly surrounded by Persian borders, and I went to war with Ottoman and took a city on the borders, and made peace because it was getting no-where.
If you save an extra Great Artist, you can send him in there and build a great work to instantly end a revolt and also add a buttload of culture, which will expand the border in that area.

You only want to do that where you aren't planning further military action, though.

Before declaring war, check the power graph and make sure you have a good lead on your victim. When you do decied to go to war, it's always nice to be at war for as long as possible, to wit, until the war weariness starts killing your economy. During that time, take as many cities as possible. A large army means that if you loose some units, you can just continue on without needing to stop and recouperate. When war weariness begins to take its toll, sue for peace, rebuild, and declare war again as soon as possible. Rince and repeat.

Also, when you're at war, build nothing but units (or at least try to). Why would you be building a library in your production powerhouse when in the same amount of time you could have produced a few more units to help your war efforts?

Sorry if you knew this, but I remember how poorly executed my attempts at war were when I was just starting out.

Which brings up the other side of the coin. You don't HAVE to go to war. If you and your neighbors are the same size and they are passing you in score, this can be due to a lot of factors. Certainly the build order in your cities and city specialization. Check out the F9 screens and see where the issues are: are you weak on the power graph? are you uncultured? is your economy the pits? is your production a fraction of your neighbors? is your food harvesting keeping your population down?

Then focus on which cities can help in those areas. Cities in hills for production - build units and buildings that help production. Cities in grass should have LOTS of cottages so you're makin $$.

Just some ideas...

If you want to play peacefully, then it's often a good idea to bribe the AI into attacking each other. If there's a civ which is behind in tech, but has a large army, then see if you can get them to attack your rivals.

The key to winning at war in Civ is that you don't attack your weakest neighbours- they're allies, hopefully, against the strongest civ. while you spend hammers conquering weaker civ the stronger civ grows....stronger. So bite the bullet and take on strongest niehgbour, you have to sooner or later if you want to win.

Beeline to Astronomy and make sure you get it first, then go and conquer the new world and win by Domination.
