Chieftain to Monarch: Game Two

Ansar the King said:
The game looks great so far, Commando!

though I wonder...its impressive that Pisae has more culture than East Mecca.. :hmm:
For a long time I used East Mecca as a worker pump and so it had minimal culture. And I had planned to build on the tile that is now Pisae. It is on Ring 3 of RCP 4, great placement, but Rome beat me to it. So East Mecca got overshadowed by the Roman tile stealers.

End of Turnset Twenty Four Stats:

Science: Military Tradition, 1 turns

  • 46 Cannon
  • 01 Army
  • 53 Ansar Warriors

longbow 06

[IBT 1250 AD Preflight]
From CAII, see that the Arabs lack 431 beakers to learn Military Tradition.
It will cost 20 gold per Ansar to upgrade to Cavalry. Have 4 eAnsars that will not upgrade, leaving 49, figure on 50. Fifty units at 20 gold per unit totals to 1,000 gold. We have 1,880 gold, so no problem there.
Consider dropping the smart slider down to 60%, gaining 400 beakers, and only losing 76 gold this turn. The following turn, drop science down to 10%, still adding 68 beakers (and thus learning Military Tradition) but also adding 232 gold.
Just looking at the gold I see that learning MT in one turn will cost 138 gold. Learning MT in two turns will cost 76 gold on turn one and then pay 232 gold on turn two and thus be a net gain of 156 gold. The overall difference between these two is 294 gold (-138 to +156).

The short term goal is to capture Rome and thus acquire Sun Tzu's Art of War. This means barracks through the Arab Empire (with no upkeep), faster healing for wounded units and all new units will be veterans.
I'm not in a rush to do anything, but the Arabs need to capture Rome, not an AI. Rome looks pretty solid, but that could change.
So, I'll learn MT in one turn to get Sun Tzu's quicker.

After MT, I'll drop the smart slider down to 40% or so and begin to learn/buy Banking, with the idea of heading to Economics to get Smith's Trading Company.

Notice that CAII and PTW do not agree on my income.

Hit Enter.

Greek settlers trespass into Arabia.
See a light blue mounted unit deep in Roman lands.
Roman settler pair moves south. Koreans attack and kill the musket and capture the settler.

We learn Military Tradition; begin to learn Banking, 4 turns at current rate (which will decrease).

Someone wants to build a Military Academy. Sounds like a good idea.

01 Mild Mannered Mecca university -> Military Academy, 27 turns.
x04 Alesia harbor -> settler, 3 turns.
x03 Lugdunum university -> vMusket, 5 turns.
x07 Richborough market -> university, 20 turns.

08 East Mecca university -> vMusket, 5 turns.

Upgrade 21 Ansars to Cavalry for 420 gold in Kufah. Other Ansars are on border patrol.
Upgrade 1 Pike to Musket (32p) for 30 gold in Mediocre Medina.
Drop science down to 40%, Banking in 6 (not 4), but +36 gpt (not -154).
We now have a strong military compared to Rome and Korea.

Trading time, looking for things to keep the Arabs happy.
See that while the Ottomans are up Banking and Astronomy, they do not need MT. In fact, the Arabs have no techs to sell to Rome, Carthage or India, in addition to the Ottomans.
May need to peddle Metallurgy and MT and stir up trouble.
And Rome has the most money.

Sell Metallurgy to Scandinavia for WM and Wines.
Sell Metallurgy to Russia for WM and Incense.
Sell Metallurgy to Ameria for WM and 33 gold (all).
Sell MT to Greece for WM, Banking, 16 gpt and 44 gold (all).
Sell MT to Egypt for WM, Astronomy and 10 gold (all).
Sell Education to Spain for 9 gold (all).
Carthage is up Democracy, Navigation and Physics. The first two are optional, the last is not. Cannot buy it, either.

Buy a worker from the Ottomans for WM and 95 gold.
Sell that worker to Rome for 28 gold (of 119). Wanted to get all of Rome's gold.
Sell WM to Rome for 13 gold (of 91).

Buy Physics from the Iroquois for WM, MT and 72 gold.
Need two techs (Theory of Gravity and Magnetism) to leave the Middle Ages. Both take 11 turns.
Learn Economics, 9 turns.

Drop the happy slider to zero and cycle through the cities.
Rush the library in Uruk for 96 gold.
Rush the market in Entremont for 256 gold, then hire a clown to make sure the city stays happy.

Raise the smart slider up to 50%, learn Economics in 7 turns, +45 gpt.
May have Mediocre Medina begin a palace prebuild for Smith's Trading Company.
Save game, August 30.
[IBT]
Reopen game, August 31. It has been more than a month since I've played at this game, so the last turn took a while as I got my bearings. Trading was done at the end and may not have been well thought out. I could reload and undo what I have done, but what would I learn doing that? So, for better or worse, I will forge onwards.

Realize we can sell Physics to Rome.
Rome offers Navigation, 17 gpt and 70 gold for Physics. I counter with WM, Navigation, the Ottoman Worker we just sold them and 78 gold (all), with NO gpt. Caesar agrees. And is broke.

Sell MT to Korea for WM, Gems, 17 gpt and 29 gold (all).

Would like to bleed the Iroquois, but they are too close and too strong. After Rome is captured, they need some Arab attention. On the histograph, the Arabs are in first place with 1095 points, the Iroquois are in second with 913, followed by the Ottomans at 825. The Iroquois are expanding, having taken some cities from Rome/Greece, I cannot be sure.
But Hiawatha needs to be stopped.

Hit Enter.

Egypt settler pair sneak in down south.
Greek settler pairs fortify in the mountains.

x01 Entremont market -> palace (Smiths Prebuild), 22 turns.

242 1260 AD

Rename the new Cavs, CavXXa, up to Cav21a.
Idiot! Moved the units from Kufah (21 vCav, Ansar Army and some Muskets) as a stack and so they did not make it to Blue Dot because of the foot soldiers. Should have moved by units (all Cavs, etc) and not as a group. Doesn't damage anything, just irritating.
Reassign and rename two settlers, sending the eastern most settler to be part of the Roman attack that will kick off next turn.
Block the Egyptians from walking north.
[IBT]
Egyptians leave.
Roman settler pair crosses the Arab borders north of Iron City. Good, a pretext for war.

x05 Gergovia settler -> settler, 6 turns.
13 MuskRat Love university -> bank, 14 turns.

243 1265 AD

Talk to Roman, ask that units be removed, they are not. Ask again, same result.
Declare war on Rome.
Wake the stack at Blue Dot, move east one tile onto the White Dot.
Add the Cav stack and friends.
All total, 98 units are on this White Dot. This will shoot the war weariness sky high, but this war will be short, since the target is to capture Rome and not kill all Romans.
Do not attack the Roman settler pair, will wait one turn. An American galley is north of the Romans and could try to steal a city spot.
[IBT]
Greeks move out east.
Romans move west.

Greece and Rome sign a peace treaty.

x04 Alesia settler -> settler, 3 turns.
x06 Camulodunum settler -> market, 25 turns.

On the north coast, looks like Ottomans and Americans want to explore and I must assume they intend to settle.
Need to use the settler that was intended to replace the Roman city to make a city to fill in the gaps on the north shore where units are lacking.
Could use workers to prevent any nosey neighbors, but this is a tactic that has some gray areas. On one coastal tile I have some workers working and moved the Ansar off of that tile to occupy another coastal tile. That seems okay, the workers are working, not just blocking.

x13 Antium stops resisting and then stops producing. Oh, well. All citizens become geeks which will force the city to starve next turn (but it will be a happy starve!).

India is building Smith's Trading Company. Maybe I should have rushed it instead of making an army.

249 1295 AD

Rome is cranky. Need 4 shields to make a worker next turn. Hire two geeks and still net 4 shields, so worker will be produced. City will starve, which is even better, since that means a drop in size from 8 to 6.
Rename the Ansar to Cavalry upgrades.

The Last of Rome

Eastern Front 1265 AD
1265AD_EastFrontTrimmedDotted.jpg

The capture of Rome went off very well. Ellipi fell on the second turn of warfare, as expected, the advance city was built on that turn also and then Rome fell on turn 3. Just like clockwork.

However, I really expected the cannons to do more damage than they did to the units and city of Ellipi. Forty-six cannons did 5 HP of damage, destroyed one building and reduce the city size one time. Seven successful attacks out of 46. But the balance to this is that Ellipi is built on a hill and the units were fortified, which made them harder to hit and damage. This same thing happened at Pisae; lots of bombardment that seemed to do little damage.

After Rome fell I was worried about it flipping back to Rome. The flipping did not bother me, just evacuate the city, but losing Sun Tzu’s Wonder was not something I wanted to happen. So I sent units to attack Antium. I saw the furs by Antium and thought they would help keep the Arabs happy by adding to our luxuries. I did not know if Rome had any trades in progress, but capturing these three furs would make their life more difficult, so it seemed a good idea. Antium fell rather quickly (one turn; one loss and two retreats) and gave us a leader in the process.
It was after capturing Antium, when checking with the Trade Advisor, that I saw we Arabs already had several sources of fur, so the main reason to attack Antium turned out to be bogus.

After the capture of Antium I saw that it was possible to rid the world of the Red Roman Renegades is just two more turns. We had units outside Pompeii (an Ansar Army to fight their Archer Army was the main attraction) and four units near Veii (2 vCav and 2 vAnsar), plus more that could be in place in one turn. I gambled that 4 healthy, fast, veteran units could defeat the wounded defenders of Veii and I was right. If I had lost this turn, I still units that could attack the following turn.

Once Veii was gone, Rome had only three cities left, Cumae, Ravenna and Hispalis. All three were conquered on one turn and Roman was gone.

Wonders
I started Entremont building Smith’s Trading Company once we learned Economics. Right now three other civs are building this wonder. I need to examine those cities on the IBT to gauge how close they are. I almost used our second great leader to build this wonder, but thought that an Army on the front lines was more important. The next leader will probably build this wonder.

Settler Pair Leakage
The north coast of Arabia was fairly well settled during these turns. And other, more productive cities were built on Ring 2 and 3. There only remains a few interior tiles that need to be ‘captured’, which I think can be done by culture expansion. If not, I have a settler in place ready to claim these tiles. This will be an IBT project.

Overall, the Arabs went for 26 cities in 1255 AD to 42 cities in 1300 AD.

Science
We are learning Theory of Gravity at 50%, due in 4 turns. If we increase science to 90% we can learn it in two turns and could possibly trade it for Magnetism, which would get us into the Industrial Age and into Steam Power.

Need to consider this on the IBT.

Who’s Next?
Rome was not a serious threat. Close, obnoxious and clearly a pest, plus a good prize (Sun Tzu’s) but not a threat.

I think that the Iroquois are the biggest threat. In game terms, they are second to the Arabs in score. They are close to the Arab borders, which makes them easy to attack. They have cavalry, like the Arabs, but lack the sheer number of Arab cities (42 Arab vs. 14 Iroquois). Plus, all military units built by the Arabs will now be veteran, thanks to Sun Tzu. In the war with Rome, it was only the Iroquois that managed to capture any Roman cities.

This war cannot begin next turn. There are Ansars to upgrade and move to the border with Hiawatha.

Overall
I was surprised at how quickly Rome went down. The war with Babylon went a lot slower than I expected, even though the end was quick. With Rome, its elimination was an afterthought. I had planned to capture Rome, make peace and then attack someone else. But Rome would not talk, so we kept attacking. And Rome kept losing units and cities until it was gone.

Gee, that was fun!

Wow, Bob. That's a lot of detail. Great going.

[IBT 1300 AD Preflight]

We are learning Theory of Gravity. Need that and Magnetism to leave the Middle Ages. Four others know of Magnetism. May be able to trade ToG for it.
Military Tradition is pretty well known. The Arabs and seven others have Cavalry. I think we have the most. If we don't, we soon will.

We have three native luxuries: Furs, Ivory and Silks. We import Wines, Incense and Gems.
x12 Pisea will capture a wine AFTER it builds a library and expands. Many turns or a lot of gold from now. The rest of the former Roman territories have only more furs.
The Iroquois have wine and dyes. The wine is adjacent to Niagra Falls (one wine). The dyes, all four of them, are near Grand River. Another group of three dyes in near Centralia.
The Greeks have three diamond mines near Delphi, in the mountains. We also have 11 turns remaining on some deal with Greece.

Cannot buy Magnetism. Will have to learn it.

Steam Power is two techs away.
Up science to 60%, learn ToG in 3, not 4 (and keep a positive cash flow).

x07 Richborough university (11 turns) -> colosseum (3 turns), rush for 120 gold, switch back to university (8 turns).
Change clowns to geeks.

Not quite ready to take on the Iroquois. Would like to have Steam Power first, or soon after war is declared. Will spend these ten turns or so trying to get smarter and happier (libs, unis and markets).
And settling.

258 1340 AD

Steam Power in 2 turns, -13 gpt.
Our military advisor says we are strong compared to Hiawatha's people.
In prepartion for war, the cities that border Carthage and the Iroquois have 3 defenders in them.

Idiot! The tile where all 46 Arab cannons sit is not roaded! Can't move to the mountains around Mauch Chunk.
It will take three turns to be able to road that tile. The closest worker, a stack of 3, are about to connect our wines near Pisea this turn. Next turn they can move to the this tile and build a road the following turn. Then on the third turn we could enter the mountians.
It is a delay but it also my own fault. I don't want to risk these units, even with 6 muskets defending, on a flood plain. A mountain is much safer. So we wait.

So we wake a few cannons to pound the units nearby.
Seven shots, 6 hits and two nearby units are redlined.
Sadly, no elite units are nearby.

The attacks on the IBT we just pinpricks. Only one city is in danger and that is Veii, where I moved an army. I've pulled Arab forces into the cities, except around Mauch Chunk. I will let them attack us, bleed themselves dry, and then counter attack.

Iroquois War
I was surprised when the mighty purple people declared war. But the war has not been bad; no cities have changed hands, even though Hiwatha has made a somewhat attempt to conquer Pisae. Now I have an Army in that city, so it should be safe.

1350 AD Mauch Chunk Area
1340AD_MauchChunkAreaTrimmedDotted.jpg

Yeah, I know the image says 1340 but it is really 1350 AD and those are the current units around Mauch Chunk. That city is on a hill, so units will be tought to kill. I hope to pound the city down to size or less before I sent troops in. But that means a lot of war weariness, so time will tell.

Other Stuff
I had more stuff in my first post, but it got lost on the server somehow. I hit preview, it went and never came back. And of course I had not copied it.

Anyway, I forgot that it takes 6WT to make roads. My worker gangs were in groups of three.

After Electricity, we are heading for Replacement Parts for Infantry and faster workers.

[IBT 1350 AD Preflight]
The Arab-Iroquois War was started by the Iroquios. So far the battles have been inconclusive, though the Iroquois have won more of the battles. No cities have been taken.

The Arabs just learned about Steam Power in 1350 and have only begun to rail their land. It will take many turns to connect everything east-west and north-south. In the meantime, Cavalry reign supreme with their ablity to move-attack-move.

Lots of people are building Smith's Trade Company, including the Arabs. Should investigate some other cities, but we are running at negative gold on the way to Replacement Parts.

The Arab military is rated strong when compared to the Iroquois. Time to make that pay off.

We lose our import of gems (Korea) and wine (Vikings) this next turn. We have a wine connected, so that will not be a problem. We have ivory, silk, furs and wines that are Arab. We lack incense, dyes, gems and spices. We may be gaining some dyes from Hiawatha.

Our economy is focused more on banks and smarts than figthing forces. This will change as the builds are completed but that means the initial forces will need to last a bit longer than average.

Hit Enter.

Lots of Iroquois units fidget moving near Mauch Chunk.

OK, so Hiawatha had built Bach's cathedral, which was making some good
culture... perhaps leading to the culture gap that enhanced the flip risk
for Mauch Chunk? IIRC, resistors also enhance the flip risk.
Had/has Hiawatha built other culture-producing wonders?

After a while, did you consider razing Mauch Chunk, and building your own
city there? I can't recall from the map whether it was well-positioned or not.
Near a key resource, perhaps?

vorlon_mi said:
Had/has Hiawatha built other culture-producing wonders?
I need to check, but I don't think so.

Mauch Chunk only flipped one time. Twice it got captured because I had moved units out the city in case it did flip and had not blocked the roads.

I did consider razing and resettling, but decided to try and starve the city into submission. For now, I need a city there to allow rail movement into the land of Big Purple.

So except for the culture flip, Mauch Chunk's problems were ones I created. To raze and replace the city because it got captured is to fix the symptom and not the problem. The problem was me, not Mauch Chunk.

Culture Wars
In 1350 the culture leaders were Iroquois, the Ottomans and the Arabs. In 1400, the order was still the same but we were gaining ground on both of them. I don't have the numbers, but the Arab culture growth is always increasing, not the up and down swings of the AI. In twenty turns we should be caught up with the Ottomans and the Iroquois will be a distant bad dream. Or so I hope.

Don't get me wrong ... I understand about leaving cities un- or under-defended,
and having the AI capture them back. It is a problem I am also trying to
rid myself of. The last few maps I have played seem to have relatively
skinny peninsulas or fingers of land, so that nearly all the cities are on the coast. My rule is : no easy invasions, so I tend to leave a defender in
all coastal cities. And it doesn't help if they're *all* coast!

The RR link answered my main question, about razing vs. starve-n-hold.

I realize (now) my response about Mauch Chunk sounded a bit terse and sort of snappy, but it was not directed at you, but at me.

I mean really!
I capture the city once, and leave units in the town to subdue the crabby and pigheaded. I move units out in case of a flip but don't pay attention to the roads and the city gets 'liberated' by the Iroquois. I capture it again, leave units in the city to keep it under control for one turn too many and the city flips back. Once again Arab units conquer Mauch Chunk, only to have it be snatched away again by Iroquois from the west, while I had positioned units to protect it from the east. So for a fourth time we stormed the city to make it Arab again. Sounds like a Civ III soap opera.

Now, I did consider razing and resettling after the third conquering; but I did not care to do that. By now I was upset enough to keep the city and starve it down. Quickly. And gloat about the starving. I wasn't about to let the Purples in Mauch Chunk get off easy by abandoning the city. I've got plenty of slaves. I wanted them to pay (for my mistakes!)

(Jumping up and down for joy when some cyber citizens of a pretend city starve to death over a five year time span. Hmm. Maybe I have real issues. :D )

No, no, really, no offense taken. I beat myself up about mistakes I make,
and especially if I made a similar mistake in a previous game, and didn't learn
from it. I'm doing a better job with bringing my forces in a group to attack,
and I try to figure out where my weak point is, for the AI counterattack...
and I usually miss it  and lose a city I shouldn't have lost.

On the plus side, I really enjoy your method of logging battles. I found myself
using your terms as I watched my Cavalry attacking Delhi and Bengal --
vCavalry -> rRifleman, wins flawlessly
vCavalry -> rRifleman, wins and promotes

I'm definitely going to use it when I step up a level! :goodjob:

Edit: add comments for next turns

Now to your game ..
We lose our import of gems (Korea) and wine (Vikings) this next turn. We have a wine connected, so that will not be a problem. We have ivory, silk, furs and wines that are Arab. We lack incense, dyes, gems and spices. We may be gaining some dyes from Hiawatha.
Is your next military objective to get some of these luxuries? Or do you need additional sources
of coal, or rubber-likely jungle? Is it too early to consider a pre-build for Hoover Dam?

I neglected to put this in the turn log, but we gained 2 dyes when we captured Grand River. There are two clumps of dyes inside the Deep Purple borders; we'll be getting complete control of one of those clumps shortly.

We are doing okay on strategic resources. We have plenty of iron and saltpeter and Mild Mannered Mecca sits on some horses.

What I need to do (opposed to what I will do :crazyeye: ) is shuffle around the Cavs into a stack for future attacks. On the north coast is an American settler pair that is hemmed in by five units, two of them Calvary. Just need to bite the bullet, kill the pair and release the remaining units for Worker Guard duty and Border City Beefup. Hiawatha has nine cities left and I don't know if I can capture them all in the next 10 turns. An extra pair of Cavs would be a good help.

I haven't really given much thought about Hoovers; I clean forgot about it and the bonus of a 'free' hydro plant in each city.

I played this last of turns differently from the others. Normally, I would do a pretty indepth analysis of city builds, units, yada yada and then mentally sketch out my plans. The turns would be played in one, maybe two sittings, with the goals somewhat in place.

This time I didn't do that. I just kept playing from the previous turnset and played about two turns at a time. With no goals to shoot for (except getting another luxury) the Arabs basically fumbled around and did rather poorly.

On the plus side, all of the Arab cities are connected by rail, even the newly Arab cities. Which means movement to the front will not be a problem. And railing was something I did focus on, not warfare. Now that the main rails are down I can focus again upon incorporating the Deep Purple into the Mighty Pink.

I sure hope so.

SGOTM 11 took up a good bit of time and I needed to play the next to last turnset (possibly) of Nero04. Nero04 is a semi-abandoned Training Day Game that HawkChieftain and I have been playing (the last two of the starters) for about the last eight months or so. We are Spain, my turns at 1790 AD, we have built six space ship parts and we are in our Golden Age.

My plan is to get another set of turns done here before I am up in any other SGs.

Talk to the Celts. Buy their WM and 3 of 3 gold for Printing Press, a tech everyone has except the Celts.
And our knowledge of world geography does not increase.

Let Ironclad01 heal in Alesia.

Move CavArmies next to Tyendenga.
Move a settler to be between Centralia and Tyendenga.
Lots of railing in Celt Land.

Planning ahead:
Next turn Tyendenga will become Arab. It is defended by a vMusket and faces 3 Cav Armies.
This will rid the mainland of the Deep Purple influence.

After the Iroquois, the next target is the Greeks, since they will be surronded by Arabs. The Greeks have only seven cities. The war should not last seven turns.

We learn Replacement Parts in 2 turns and will need to upgrade the vMuskets to vInfantry. That will cost money, so time to trade.

Sell Electricity to Greek for WM, Democracy and 1551 of 1551 gold; refused 150 gold per turn.
Sell Electricity to Ottomans for WM, Free Artistrry, 2 gpt and 148 of 148 gold. Ottomans know more about the world than we do.
Sell Democracy to Spain for WM, 8 gpt and 114 of 114 gold.
Sell Electricity to India for WM, spices, 118 gpt and 107 of 107 gold.
Sell Steam Power to Egypt for WM and 70 of 70 gold.
Sell Electricity to Korea for WM, incense, 46 gpt and 48 of 48 gold.

[IBT]

And the save is >>HERE<<.

The war with Hiawatha has not gone as I planned, largely because I had no plan. Exploiting opportunites worked on Rome but not on the Iroquois. Their cities were a bit more spread out and not clumped together.

On the other hand, the Iroquois have only two cities left. One is their 6th capital, Tyendenga. The other city is offf on some island somewhere.

Tyendenga should fall next turn, since it will be attacked by 3 Armies. Then comes a few turns of healing and then on turn 5 of the next turnset the Arabs will attack Greece, which has only seven cities. At this point, Greece will be surronded on three sides by Arab lands.

My goal is that the war with Greece last 5 turns, aiming for 3 turns. Having rails will let Arab units move from one attack place to another very quickly.

In two more turns we learn Replacable Parts and the Muskets will be upgraded to Infantry. We will begin Scientific Method and will have a prebuild for Darwin's Voyage, aiming for Hoover.
