The Arab To-Do List
I decided some time back to finish this with a Conquest victory. With only three large AIs remaining (India, Vikings and Korea) I need to begin to focus on ending this as quickly as possible. This last turnset I just went through the motions and got ready for the finale. I have just a few factories in operation right now, but more will come online in the next turnset.

It is possible to finish this game before we have any Tanks. We are the tech leaders and the production heavy weights. We can afford to lose a lot of units, even though I think that is wasteful. So while we have factories making Cavalry and Infantry, we will also have some making Artillery also.

England 1600 AD
Not too long ago I met England, in all of her One City Civ glory. England will not be hard to conquer. It will just take a while to get to England.

We may need marines to take out the Iroqouis. I don't think they will be needed to finish off the Celts. May keep two of the three Celt cities, just to have a barracks overseas.

Left over units from here will move further eastward to deal with England.

America will go down quickly. We'll move our transports in by Chicago and let them stay there through an IBT. On the next turn we will declare, attack, capture and rail to Chicago. Transports will enter the port, load up, sail east and try to take Washington. If Washington falls, New York and Philadelphia could become Arab the same turn. Boston, to the south, has some hills that will slow Cavalry movement.

With enough troops, America will be gone in 2 turns, without needing combat settlers.

Some of these units will load up to free the world of the Celts, Iroquois and English. Others will come back to the mainland.

India is mainly on flat land, but has a lot of jungle to go through. We'll probably start in the north and liberate southwards. At some point (depends on an ROP with Spain) we'll finish India and then Spain, hopefully on the same turn.

I have seen Viking Bezerk units roaming around, so we will have to make sure that all 12 Viking cities become Arab on one turn. Lots of open ground, plenty of room to move, looks pretty easy.

Korea will be the tough nut to crack. A lot of cities and good defensive terrain, hills and mountains. We'll need a lot of artillery (or a lot of units to waste) to take out Korea in a timely fashion.

Thinking Out Loud

May let another 10 turns go by before doing anything exciting. Still have 6 more turns of gpt deals with India and the Iroquois.

On the turn before the Arab Assualts begin, we will sign ROPs with the AIs. Once we trash our reputation, we won't be able to make ROPs, so I do that early. May try for multiple landings on America to make her death quicker, but will violate the ROP to get the quick kill. Same for Spain. Not sure about anyone else.

Korea will be not be easy. Furtherest south, worst terrain and fairly advanced. Could try to take our Korea first, but that would leave AIs in the backfield. Korea will be last and the take down will be slow and methodical. Lots of atry, lots of Cavalry, and maybe some Tanks.

India and Spain
I had planned to invade America and then go sailing to the land of the Celts, Iroquois and English. Until I saw that India had learned Replaceable Parts and thus could make Infantry.

So I declared war on India, took seven cities in one turn, took the eighth city a few turns later and then declared war on Spain to finish off India.

As of now, both Spain and India have one city. India's fourth capital will become Arab on the next turn. Spain's second capital is on a hill surronded by hills and mountains. Even with a combat settler in place (and one is in place), it will take several turns to get roads, artillery and assualt troops into position. An Arab vInf is 1N of the new Spanish capital of Santiago, but that is not enough to take the city next turn.

Techs
We Arabs now know how to fly and are building some fighters for combat support. We are learning how to make Tanks, but that will be about 2 turns or so before we can begin building the Toys of Guderian, Rommel and Patton.

Next Foe
I had planned to save Korea for last but that may change. With over 80 artillery (and several high production cities building artillery) I think we can begin to wear down the Korean empire. I fully expect a vInfantry defending each Korean city and most Korean cities are on a hill. This would boost the normal defense of the Infantry from 10 to 15. Artillery attacks with 12. It might take all 80 artys to redline the vInfs in a city on a hill. The lightning strikes on India and Spain will be replaced with a slow, methodical chewing up of the Korean Confederation. Korean cities are also placed further apart due to the terrain, so I will need to use combat settlers.

After Korea, then either the Americans or Vikings.

It looks like the islands will be the last places to be attacked, by which time I may be able to use atomic weapons, which will make conquest much easier.

Wow, just two more cities and all this land will be Arab. Copenhagen and Chicago, it is becoming time for you to be assimilated. Reisistance is futile.

I broke the notes into three parts due to image restraints and hitting the max size in Notepad (32KB). Not to be fancy or dramatic.

These turns were just a grind. The battles weren't too bad, but keeping the workers and slaves busy is a real time killer. Most of the Indian jungles are gone and those tiles are roaded and railed. I have started parking slaves and workers just to avoid dealing with them.

Earlier I indicated I wanted to deal with the island nations first and then come back to deal with Korea. That lasted until Korea got Infantry and then Korea became the primary target. Now that Korea is dead I still need to clean up the islands.

America will be easy. Their island is very close to the mainland so ferrying units across will not be difficult. We have five transports, so three with Tank and two with Cavlary should do just fine. That means 40 units facing 4 cities. (In PTW, transports can carry 8 units. In C3C they can only carry 6 units.) So America should last two turns.

Now the other islands have their own problems, mainly due to distance. I can't easily ship new units out to them. So I think I will let Arab technology help.

I will send a transport to each of the inhabitited islands. The transports will be filled with Cavalry and some Tanks, due to their extra movement. It will take some time to sail into position, but that cannot be helped. I will probably rush some Destroyers or Cruisers to serve as escorts. Marines will not be needed as we can land whereever we want to on the islands.

Once the transports are in place, we wait for Arab scientists to play with uranium and make a bomb. When we have enough, these bombs will be launched at the islands and eliminate the defenders, allowing our troops to land almost unopposed and claim this world for the Argumentative Arabs.

And then this game will be done.

Two reasons mainly.

One, I never liked the phrase 'Shazam, shazam, shazam!' (OK, I know I'm dating myself what that, but I still don't like the phrase).

And Two, I just want to nuke 'em. The techs are close enough and I need only need to build one more wonder. I could rush the weapons with ease. And it solves the Enough issue. That is, how many units are enough to take the islands. The mainland is far away. If I have too few, I wait a long time for the new ones to arrive (or rush an airport). If I have too many, most of them stay in the boats. I'd rather not deal with that, which leaves nukes.

Plus, the best English defender right now is a Spear.

This is finally over.

I started this thread back on September 18, 2005. Now, almost 17 months later, the deed is done and the beast is slain. Life can go on.

As I was playing this game I was involved in several SGs.
SGOTM 09 started up soon after I began this thread, in which I was part of Team Smurkz. That game was at Monarch, PTW, same as this one. That was very educational and a lot of fun. SGOTM 10 with Team Smurkz was C3C and Emperor, as was SGTOM 11. SGOTM 12, just started, is C3C Diety.

I also was part of three Training Day Games, one PTW Emperor (nero04) and the other C3C Emperor (D'Artngan01 and TomTom05, still in progress).

And I also started a game, Always War Monarch C3C (CBob01).

It wasn't that I ignored this game. I just felt it was less important than the real SGs I was involved with.

Lessons Learned

1 Some things are not worth documenting, especially after 1000 BC.

Early on worker moves are critical; later ones are not. Connecting a resource is critical and worthy of note; irrigating a fourth flood plain is not. Recording and posting bombardment results is praisworthy but unneeded.
2 Connecting luxuries is not optional and neither are markets.

At Chieftain markets are not important. At Monarch and above, where crankiness can set in when you birth the second citizen, markets are neccessary to keep your citizens happy and the cities productive.
3 Big cites are not always better cities.

While not something I learned from this game, it is a lesson I applied here. By not learning Sanitation, I never knew how to build Hospitals. This meant no city could get larger than size 12. And it made no difference. Good cities still produced units in a good time frame.
4 It is very hard to have too many workers and too many slaves.

But this game may have been one of those times; 138 workers and 177 slaves for 150-160 cities. I built workers towards the end because I wasn't ready to switch those cities to wealth. So I kept these units busy by clearing jungle and trying to road and rail the entire continent, including the mountains.
5 Specialist farms in the boonies.

In PTW, the power of the taxman and geek are much less than in C3C, but the lesson is the same. Where corruption is high, let the city grow to size 6 and then adjust the citizens to have zero growth and use the specialists for extra cash or smarts. In a coastal city, build a harbor if the terrain is lousy. Inland, irrigate everything, even bonus grasslands, because the city will net only one shield per turn anyway. On average, it seems, a specailist farm supports two specailists per city.
6 The AI wages a weak war.

The advantage of the AI is not that it is smarter than the player. The advantage is that it starts with more units and can make them cheaper and learn things faster. The AI is good about attacking solo units, but it cannot seem to figure out a strategy except to attack the weakest thing that is nearby.
7 Razing cities is not always done out of spite.

Razing a city produces slaves, which is free labor. It also eliminates the chance of the city having resistance issues, which is a great timesaver. It is just easier to raze and replace than to keep a city, starve it down (time consuming) and then let grow back and be corrupt. Raze it, resettle it that turn and not worthy about the ethnic population. I should have done this more; it would have been a lot easier.
8 Have a plan, even a bad one.

When the Iroquois declared war on us I was caught a little off guard. I was trying to prepare for a war with them but was not ready to declare. I though I needed more units and a good plan of attack. So when they declared I was forced to react. And so I did, but I still did not have a plan. 'Fight Iroquois' is not a plan. So I found the war with the Iroquois to be somewhat disjointed and out of focus. That war seemed to drag on for a lot longer than I expected.
9 Not the challenge I expected.

I think it was right after the Romans were eliminated, and eliminated rather quickly, that I really knew I could win the game. Until then, I wasn't sure. At that point I knew, and then all I had to do was crank out units and win battles.
10 Level up.

Next solo game will be at Emperor in C3C, not PTW. I haven't played a solo game since I started this one. Finally, a game where I will not have to document anything!
