And the save is >>HERE<<.

Rather dull. No outbursts of AI anger, no outrageous demands on our neighbors. Just ten turns of building the biggest army in the world. One that despises the coloring of Dark Blue.

The peace deal with Babylon ends on this IBT. And before we declare war, we have several things to do. First, get Gunpowder, so we can plan on how to deny saltpeter to Babylon. I have seen some muskets walking around, so they will be a problem. However, if a city begins building a unit that requires a special resource, and during the building of that unit the city losses connection with that resource, the city can still continue to build that unit. So just cutting off the iron and saltpeter will not make Babylon an overnight wimp.

It might be nice to have an MA vs. Babylon with Rome. Even better would be if Rome joined in on their own.

I know that Silk City and A-jar will be razed and replaced; not so sure about Ashur. Need to open CAII and look at RCP 4 again.

Arab Strength
Military:
  • 02 Settlers
  • 32 Workers
  • 01 Scouts
  • 02 Archers
  • 04 Swordsman
  • 32 Pike
  • 04 Longbow
  • 33 Catapults, 1 in production (Yoyo Ma)
  • 28 Ansar Warriors 14 in production (Mild Mannered Mecca, Mediocre Medina, Demaskus, Ivory City, Kufah, East Mecca, FussAat, Aden, MuskRat Love, BackHoe, ArabCeltConnector, Entremont, Verulamium and Richborough)
  • 33 Mace
  • 30 Slaves
Total units: 171

The Army of the North consists of about 25 units spread across three mountain tiles south of ArabCeltConnector.

The Army of the South is about 57 units, parked just outside Silk City, inside catapult range.

We have other units in Mediocre Medina and Kufah, close to the Babylonian border. These may cross the border to pick off stragglers. But I plan to leave Mild Mannered Mecca undefended, so I expect the AI to send troops to capture the city. On the way they will be mauled by the units in these two cities.

Biggest worry: that I have waited too long to attack Babylon.

Examined the game with CivAssistII (CAII) to determine the fate of Ashur. Ahsur will be razed. It sits just out of Ring 2 (at a base RCP of 4) and will cause the somewhat productive cities on Ring 3 (MuskRat Love and whatever replaces Silk City plus any new cities) to become less productive. So it must go.

From Mild Mannered Mecca to Entermont is a distance of 18 (in RCP numbers). The tiles 1W, 1NW and 1N of FussAat are all at a distance of 9 from both cities. This line of tiles splits the Arab empire and serves to indicate where the Forbidden Palace takes affect. As I remember, any city closer to the FP than the capital is considered at Rank 0 for rank corruption. But it has been a long time since I examined the details, but something like this is going on. It is a Vanilla/PTW feature and was removed in Conquests.

Before we declare war:
Buy Gunpowder.
Plan how to deny Babylon saltpeter.
Get Rome in an MA vs. Babylon?
Review RCP of 4; Keep Ashur or not? Ashur and Ur will both be razed. Other cities can be kept to make wealth/slaves.

Try to bully Babylon into war. As effective as always (we are ignored).

Hit Enter.

Four American units land in Celt Land. Pike, spear, longbow and sword.

02 Mediocre Medina vAnsar (29) -> vAnsar, 4 turns.
07 FarRiverside market -> vPike, 4 turns.

Buy Gunpowder from India for 906 gold (best deal by far).

We already have units standing on Babylon's lone saltpeter, near ArabCeltConnector.
We have two sources of saltpeter inside our own borders.
As far as I can tell, Babylon only has one source of horses, near A-jar, and that is now disconnected from the bulk of the Babylonian cities. No new knights, but still have to survive the current ones.

Move some units into Babylon to harass, capture slaves and pillage. Only one unit is single stacked, a vPike on a mountain. Other raiding units are double stacked. They may go down, but they will take units with them.
Some of the captured slaves are left undefended to serve as bait.

The siege of Uruk took longer than expected, but it was worth it. It will be a culture flip problem for some time, but since Hammurabi built Leonardo’s Workshop here we decided to keep the city. Right now every citizen in Babylon is a specialist and producing no food. There is no food in the food box, so in just a few turns Uruk will be down to size 1 and I will add some good Arab people to the city. Right now we have a surplus of workers. I plan to leave some units close to Uruk in case it does get flip-happy.

Other highlights:
Silk City was captured, razed and resettled as Silk City II.

A-jar was captured and razed, has not be resettled.

We produced our first Great Leader in the capture of Uruk. He is on his way to build an Ansar Army.

Babylon has no native access to saltpeter, iron or horses. Which means no new muskets or knights. Longbows are available and those have been produced. These little suckers have an attack of 4, which plays havoc with Arab Ansar Warriors, which only defend with 2. So I try to have the Ansars in stacks of two at end-of-turn. If a longbow attacks it will be damaged and the surviving Ansar can kill it.

Started the turns with 171 units, broken down as 32 workers, 2 settlers and 30 slaves, leaving 107 combat units.
Ended the turns with 173 units, broken down as 32 workers, 1 settler and 42 slaves, leaving 98 combat units.
Net loss of 9 combat units over ten turns, which does not seem too bad.

Future Arab Land 1050 AD

Babylon
After capturing Uruk my plans had been to head north, conquer the two cities on the north coast of Babylon, head to Nineveh, and after taking Nineveh begin the siege of Babylon. That plan has changed.

The siege of Uruk took longer than expected as I pounded and starved the city down to size 6. It will take four turns to move the 28 catapults to Babylon to begin the siege. It is the capital city and will be strongly defended. Ansars will move in ahead of the mass of catapults and pillage improvements and deny the tiles to the citizens inside Babylon. In time Babylon will starve down to size 6 and the assault will begin.

The change in plans is to reduce Babylonian cultural pressure on the northern cities. Babylon has three wonders (can’t recall which ones though) and their culture is growing faster than ours. Don’t want to build cities to have them flip to Babylon, so taking the capital is a must.

Also, it will not be possible to remove the Babylonian empire in another ten turns. Remove the capital, yes. Pester some cities and perhaps capture some, well, maybe. Eliminate the Dark Blue, uh, sadly, no way.

Other Stuff
This also means in five turns I need to begin planning for the reinforcements to arrive at a slower rate. In ten turns the Golden Age will be over and production will return to its former levels. It will harder to replace units lost in battle.

We did upgrade some pikes to muskets, but more remain to be done. I need to cycle through the cities and rename the units as I do so. Since the threat of Babylonian attacks on the fair and quiet cities of Arabia has been greatly diminished some border garrison troops (muskets) can be released to replace the older pikes that are in the front lines, thus allowing the pikes to be upgraded.
We still have some archers that need to upgraded, also.

Rome has Metallurgy, but is unwilling to let us have their monopoly tech. Metallurgy would be very nice to have right now, since we could upgrade our catapults to cannons and deal death better to our opponents.

The Next Ten
The big goal in the next ten turns is to capture Babylon. Secondary goal is to pillage as much Dark Blue land as possible, not only around Babylon but empire wide. After capturing Babylon we will head south to capture Ur and Ashur. This would give our units easier access to the front lines. It would also make sure that the new capital of Babylon is Nineveh, further to the north. Cultural pressure is reduced, interior lines are shorter (few turns of travel when heading north) and many new city sites are available on Ring 2 and 3.

Need to organize the slaves in groups of six, which will allow them to complete many tasks in one turn. With 42 slaves, this would be seven groups.

Build the Ansar Army (unless a good wonder becomes available).

Would like to get Metallurgy, but probably cannot buy it from Rome.

It is hard to see it in the way I write, but I am. :) And learning a lot, too!

Producing a GL was great. Now to use him properly.

It does get a bit nerve-wracking pounding at a city with a Wonder you want. I don't think that Wonders can be hit by bombardments, just not absolultely sure about that fact.

make it into an Ansar army. :smug: :D (its as fast as cavalry, or are the army conditions different in [ptw]?)

And Babylon is destroyed.

Hannibal claims his troops are missionaries. Wrong Civ Game. Blockade his unit anyway, since Arabs consider all non-Arabs infidels.

[IBT]
And the save is >>HERE<<.

Biggest news: Babylon is gone. Did not think it could be done in 20 turns, but it was. After Nineveh was gone (and it went quick) I just started plinking at Akaad and soon saw that it could fall that same turn. It did and the end was in site.

However, since it has been a long time since I eliminated someone, I expected the knock-out message to show up once the last city was taken. Babylon still had two settlers, so the game figured that they could build cities on the IBT and not be destroyed. Once both settlers were captured that killed that idea. But I spent money buying World Maps trying to find the last Babylonian city.

The city of Babylon was captured and is now Arab, which means that the Pyramids are Arab and so is the Sistine Chapel. We also picked up the Great Wall, now that it is useless.

However, this also ends the Arab Golden Age. So next turn things will take longer to produce.

On the last two turns I started building universities and other infrastructure. In the next war I cannot have my cities shutting down due to War Weariness. So, more markets to keep people happy, since we now have four luxuries: ivory, fur, silk and something else I cannot remember.

I can buy Metallurgy from Rome for about 3900 gold. I have over 40 catapults to upgrade. I think I will wait, increase the science spending and learn Metallurgy on my own. Arab science is in bad shape right now. I don’t think we will ever be the science leader, but we can do self research.

I need to analyze this war. In twenty turns I lost about 50 Ansar Warriors. This was the main assault force, so this is not too unexpected. The ones I lost in offensive operations I understand. But I lost too many to Babylonian counterattacks. I still have over 50 left and in just a few turns they will all be healed. I still have some pikes to upgrade and one eSword that produced our GL can now be upgraded to vMace. Did not lose any catapults. Gained a lot of workers.

International
Everyone is dogpiling on Rome, but Rome seems to be thriving. In the city of Rome is Sun Tzu’s Art of War, which would be very nice in a conquest game. If we declared war on Rome in the next five turns, we might be able to get to Sun Tzu’s rather quickly.

But with the Iroquois focused on Rome, it might be better to declare on the Iroquois and run over their lightly defended backside. They have the most cities and are now the cultural leaders.

In either case, it will take several turns to get units into position to attack.

Intranational
I need to get some settlers made and cities built quickly. Empty land is at a premium and Babylon had a lot of it. Carthage thinks they will walk through Arabia to put a city on our newly conquered land. Not quite. Back to dotmapping and such. Ring 1 at a distance of 4 is complete, Ring 2 is somewhat complete and Ring 3 is hardly begun. It would be nice to add about 10 Arab cities in the next turns, but I am probably dreaming. Need to look at the maps.

May need to barricade the border to keep the riff-raff out.

Need to regroup the workers and slaves and maybe add workers or slaves to cities. Since Babylon is gone, adding Dark Blue slaves to cities will not increase the flip chance to Babylon, nor will the cities be more cranky in times of war, since Babylon will not be attacked. Need to have slaves in stacks of 6 and workers in stacks of 3. Both will be 3WT per stack. This means a road in one turn (flat land) or a mine in 2 turns.

I will post a dot map of new city sites before I play anymore.

Workers: 32
Slaves: 83
Total: 115

Will add Arab workers to new cities, keep the slaves and group them in stacks of 6 (3WT).

Have ongoing, non terminating trades with Rome (we give Ivory, we get 7gpt) and Iroquois (we give furs, we get 11 gpt).
We have an ROP with India, but I cannot remember why.
We have ongoing terminating trades with Scandinavia (we gave something for wines, 9 turns left), Greece (we gave something for 7gpt, 5 turns left) and America (we gave peace for peace, 12 turns left).

Plan to undo the Ivory to Rome, then try for Metallurgy one last time.

Cost to upgrade Catapults to Cannon: 30 gold each. Fourty six catapults would be around 1500 gold (30 x 50).
Cost to upgrade Ansar Warriors to Cavalry: 30 gold each. 52 Ansars would be around 1500 gold (30 x 50).
And Military Tradition follows Metallurgy.
Brand new military for 3000 gold.

Total: Ten cities.

Iron City to Rome 1150 AD

Rome has Sun Tzu's Art of War, which we need for instant barracks and one turn healing.
The plan is like this.
Assemble about 40 Ansars, one settler, catapults and some defenders at the Blue Dot. I think it is being roaded right now.
Declare on Rome.
Move all these units, including the settler, onto the White Dot.
Survive any attacks, bombard city and capture with non-Ansar attackers, if possible. Leader farm, too.
After Ellipi is Arab, move the settler and some defenders to the Yellow Dot.
Move those that missed the Ellipi fight to the Red Dot or Yellow Dot. Yellow Dot is better.
Next turn, build on Yellow Dot.
If we are lucky, the tile due west of Rome will be Arab. Hmm, could move some units onto it to be sure.
Attack from Green Dot.
With Rome's other wars, I expect the capital to be rather lightly defended, with less than 10 units inside, possibly closer to five.

Move units out of the city for when it flips, because it will.

War Weariness should not be too bad, since except on the first turn we will not be leaving many units inside enemy territory.

Well, this is the plan. It looks good, feels good.

Just hope it works good, too.

[IBT 1150 AD]
Expired but ongoing trade with Rome and Iroquois cancelled.
Rome is at war with Greece, Iroquois, Spain and Russia.
Rome has 9 cities fighting against 4 AIs that have a total of 25 (Greece: 7; Iroquois: 12; Spain: 5; Russia: 1).
This is just a fact for now, not sure what it really means.
Run through the cities, looking for quick settlers. Now is the time to rush.

Rush harbor in x07 Richborough, 60 gold.
Rush courthouse in x05 Gergovia for 148 gold.
Short rush vAnsar in 08 East Mecca, switch to university, 8 turns.
Rush courthouse in 10 FussAat for 160 gold.

No good cities to rush settlers. Let's get this turn's production in the bank and reexamine.

Save game for later Reference.

Hit Enter.

Greeks want to talk.
Greeks want us to sign an MA vs. Rome and agree to an ROP.
No, not right now.

x07 Richborough harbor -> market, 8 turns.
x05 Gergovia courthouse -> settler, 3 turns.

231 1160 AD

Build road to connect Roman city of Ellipi to Iron City.
Move units towards Blue Dot, now roaded.

Play with the happy slider. Drop it from 40% to 10%, no cities will revolt.
Up the science slider to 90%. We learn Metallurgy in 3 turns at -261 gpt or -783 total.
To buy from Rome for straight cash is 3562 gold.
Yeah, 90% Science is a better deal, plus it leave gold for upgrading catapults to cannons.

Sell Chemistry to Russia for WM and 34 gold (all).
[IBT]

Huh?

Golden Age is over now? I must have miscounted the turns.

Carthage tries to sneak a settler pair into Arabia.

Now everyone gets cranky.
x01 Entremont riots. Hire a clown.
Scroll through other cities; look OK.

07 FarRiverside vAnsar (103) -> vMusket, 7 turns.
14 BackHoe harbor -> settler, 4 turns.

222 1170 AD

Name and rename some slaves.
Upgrade eSword Uruk-Bye to vMace, for 10 gold.

Since our Golden Age is over, we learn Metallurgy in 4 turns, not 3. Still cheaper to do it ourselves than pay Rome.

[IBT]
May have to barricade the south border of Arabia to keep out Carthage and Egypt.

x06 Camulodunum aqueduct -> settler, 3 turns.
x02 Verulamium market -> harbor, 7 turns.

233 1180 AD

More renaming. Gone from A1..A6 to J1..J6.
Move units to the Carthage-Arab border to prevent incursions of illegal aliens.
Catapults to Kufah for upgrade.
Pikes to Mediocre Medina for upgrade.

Rome will sell Metallurgy for 1802 gold.

Left a gap in the border fence and two Ottoman settler pairs sneak in.

x04 Alesia market -> harbor, 7 turns.

234 1190 AD

Sell Chemistry to America for WM, 2gpt and 18 gold (all).
Ask the Ottomans to leave or declare. They don't declare, but we will wait and see.
Rome will sell Metallurgy for 925 gold. We learn it in 2 turns and then plan to attack Rome. So we won't buy.

After trading, see that the Ottoman settlers went away. Good.

Add an Arab worker to x08 Uruk.

Upgrade 8 vPikes for 240 gold.
Upgrade 1 vArcher for 20 gold.
[IBT]
Two Roman settler pairs enter from the east.
Carthage sneaks another settler pair in from the south.

16 ArabCeltConnector library -> harbor, 20 turns.

235 1200 AD

Up to Musket28p.
Upgrade 2 more vPikes.

Drop the smart slider from 90% to 10% and we still learn Metallurgy in 1 turn, but now at +221 gold.

[IBT]
Greek settler pair incursion near 08 East Mecca.
Carthage slips another pair across the border. For the last time.
Romans move back east.
Somehow an Arab worker wandered into Iroquois land. We agree to move.

Romans unload a settler pair from a galley in Old Babylon Land.
Looks like we get a Roman city in a few turns. Unless we declare now and our forces are not ready.

We learn Metallurgy.
We start to learn Military Tradition (Cavalry).

x06 Camulodunum settler -> settler, 4 turns.
14 BackHoe settler -> settler, 4 turns.

236 1210 AD

Upgrade 44 catapults to cannon, 880 gold.

Would like to declare war on Carthage. The plan would be to capture some settlers and make slaves.
Do not plan to invade, Rome is the first priority.
Talk to Hannibal first and he agrees to pull his people out. Good.
But if they return...

Talk to Greece. They say they will pull out, but do not.
Move units from East Mecca to block them.

Settler from BackHoe named Uruk-1S-2SE to show where it is going. Original location on a Bonus Grassland.
Settler from Camulodunum names Ring2-1SWofRubble to show its destination. Will take a while.

Surround the Roman settler pair and force them to build in place.

Wake up some Ansars at Blue Dot and have them do shore patrol. An American galley showed up last IBT. If it has a settler on board, it needs to keep moving.
Need to play with the smart slider and learn Military Tradition faster.

Save game.
While away from the game, debate myself about blocking the border with Carthage. This ties up units that could assault Rome, mainly Ansars. In past games, Carthage has always been a border breaker and rather bull-headed about removing the offending units. I could deal with the wandering, but would rather not. Keeping Carthage (and others) out of soon to be Arab lands is a lot easier than having to work around their cities and borders. And with 40+ cannons, I should be able to bombard better and harder than with catapults.
In the end, while I could play mind games with Carthage, I decide the best thing to do for the future is to keep the Carthage border closed.

Open the game.
Set smart slider to 90% and learn Military Tradition in 5 turns, -273 gpt, which is around 1350 gold total to learn how to make Cavalries. Cheap. And Rome does not have it, either.
[IBT]
The American land a settler pair next to the Roman settler pair up north.
Greeks leave Arabia.

Vikings want to talk.
Wants to swap TM.
Instead, sell WM for their WM and 11 gold (of 27).

Carthage wants to talk.
Wants to sell Banking for 1161 gold, after haggling.

x01 Entremont university -> market, 6 turns.
07 FarRiverside vMusket (31) -> vMusket, 7 turns.

We lost our supply of wines. Not good. Cranky people.

239 1240 AD

No cranky people. That's nice.
Add 2 Arab workers to Murr, now is size 3.

Check with Map Stat. There are cranky people, I just missed them.

And the save is >>HERE<<.

The plan I had to invade and capture Rome still looks like a good one. I will need to rush a build and a settler someplace close to the border, perhaps in Iron City or Kufah. Rush the library in Iron City this turn and then build a setter. Upgrade the Ansars next turn and move to Blue Dot. Let the settler build for one turn and then rush. Then we are ready to go to war. All the catapults have been upgraded to cannons. We have 46 of them.

The Arab core is building universities to help with research. The Celt core is building settlers to make the Arab core stronger and to seal off the north coast from undesirables (Romans, Americans, Celts, etc). We need five cities to seal off the north coast and five cities for the Arab core. For now we have military units on the north shore, and as cities get built to take theri place they will allowed to do real military stuff. The drawback to building settlers in the Celt core is the long distance they have to travel to arrive at their new homes. I’ve compensated for this be renaming the settlers to indicate where their new home is. That way I won’t forget.

Rome’s Enemies 1240 AD

For whatever reason, Caesar and Hiawatha do not like each other. In addition to starting the war with Rome, Hiawatha has signed MAs with Greece, Spain, Egypt and Russia. Only Greece shares a common border with Rome, so I am not sure of the net effect of these MAs.

North Coast 1250 AD

This Roman city will be gone is a few turns. On the turn we declare on Rome it will be razed. And while I would like to declare war on America and get that settler pair taken care of, we still have 14 turns of some deal with America. Declare, break treaty and lose our reputation. Not worth it for one small city.

So instead of taking out this city, I may let it live. As long as it is alive and is surrounded by troops, the Americans cannot build. If I take the city and rebuild it, then the American’s are stuck, too. May do this, will need to re-dot the north coast if I do this.

East Border 1250 AD

The two Korean Knights bother me because I don’t know what they are doing. The Roman city of Pisae has been ignored by all the Korean units, which seems odd. If the Koreans are planning to attack Ellipi, then my task becomes more difficult. I have to hope the Romans can survive until I can attack. Ellipi has some culture, since its borders to the NW are two tiles out, indicating one culture expansion. If the Koreans attack the Roman settler pair, then the outcome is good for me. I do not want Ellipi to become Korean since we have a deal with Korea right now also. Well, we could sign an ROP with Korea, march through and attack Rome.

I think I need to investigate Rome and Ellipi on the IBT.

Whew! Man, I thought that the Journal Entries (well, the earlier ones anyways) in my TDG (link in my sig) were detailed. You put me to shame, CommandoBob!

You're doing great! :goodjob:

The game looks great so far, Commando! :thumbsup:

though I wonder...its impressive that Pisae has more culture than East Mecca.. :hmm:
