City Name Maps

I've been absent for awhile, I didn't get to release finalized maps for France and Germany that addressed all of these concerns. They'll be in for the next beta I think?

EDIT: I mean in version 1? :D

Of course
Keep improving the maps as long as you want to, and I will upload the changes when you guys think it's more or less ready

Will look into the city spots.
Btw, someone else also made some changes to the Ottoman map (IIRC KartoffelVampir)
Did you check his files too (and merge in where needed)?

Whoops, I assumed the files in the first post were the latest version? Anyways as I said I did basically only Anatolia so my changes should be easy to merge in.

Yep, most of them are the latest version
Only exception was the WIP changes of KartoffelVampir on the Byzantine/Ottoman maps and Michael Vick's planned changes on France/Germany

Great, will include your changes tonight

Updated Ottoman, French, Burgundian, Genoan, Venetian city name maps, and the Polish settler map
Latest maps are in the first few posts

Great!
Thx Morholt, you are keeping the map updates alive :goodjob:
I didn't have too much time in the past week or so to do some real modding, but hopefully will get back on it in a few days
Updated Bulgarian City Name Map
3Miro, do you want to run through this before I upload it to the svn?

Yes, I will do it tonight. The bigger question is whether those changes have been synced with the Byzantine and Ottomans maps, this is a bit more work and that's why I kept on pushing it back.

No they have not. I changed the Wallachia and Serbia area since I was doing it anyways for my Serbia civ. The "Byzantine" areas of the map are same as before.

Is there a reasonably final version of Byzantines/Ottomans to synch with?

Unfortunately not
3Miro said he want to make a few changes to these 3 civs, but he has more than enough on his hands and didn't have time for it
So that area remained more or less untouched

I looked at the Bulgarian map and I do need to make the changes myself, the city name maps are best made by people from the region that are more familiar with the history and geography.

For example: "Veliko Turnovo" should be just "Turnovo" as "Veliko" means "Great" and is a title given to the city to signify its historic importance. Also, it should be west of Preslav, not South. The place of Turnovo should be "Beroe" or "Beroya" which was a major mining town in the middle ages. It is hard to research such details from Google maps and Wikipedia, it is time consuming even with good general knowledge, it is next to impossible without.

Definitely, I actually use a historical atlas for research but it was rather vague on medieval Bulgaria. First-hand knowledge is always best. It does look like Turnovo is quite far from Donau though, should it really be on the river (Or Preslav either for that matter)?

Both Turnovo and Preslav are far from the Danube, but on our map, there is only 1 - 2 tiles between the river and the Balkan mountain and both cities are not in the mountain. While they are not on Danube, they are both on rivers so it isn't too ageographical to build them like that.

Yeah, our map is too small. We cannot afford to place our cities totally accurately both historically and geographically :/
I mean, if we want to place the historically most imprtant cities then we have to cheat geographically in many cases

I just updated the city name maps on the Balkans for Byzantium, Bulgaria and Turkey (the last one only needed couple of tiles to be synced). The changes are directly in RFCEmaps.py.

@AbsintheRed: I just changed the Python file, I hope this isn't conflicting with any changes that you were making.
