I was looking on Google the other day to see if there was a way I could run Civ 3 at the native resolution of my 20" Cinema Display. I came across this page at http://www.defyne.org/civ3hack/. It's a little app that allows Civ 3 to run at additional resolutions. Just drag the Civ 3 app on to it and change the numbers in the text fields to your screen resolution and hit the hack button. Then start up Civ 3 holding down the option key and choose the new resolution from the list. Hope this helps you Cinema Display and PowerBook users. 
I'm sure that's going to answer a lot of people's prayers. It doesn't leave much for us to hold our breath for in the official 1.29f release.
