Civ 5 coming with an Earth Map?

I hope it's bigger than Civ4's Earth Map, since you can fit only one city in a modern European country like Germany or France (you can actually fit several in the British Isles). But you can found cities just one tile away from one another (with penalties), so I'm sure that will help.

That's a spin off, it isn't part of the "actual" series, it doesn't have a number

Ironically enough, for the record Sid himself already broke that tradition. There was no Earth map in CivRev.

CivRev's map is too small to display Earth in any meaningful manner. I don't know the exact measurements but I'd estimate it is about 1000 squares, or 1/4 of a standard Civ4 map.

Didn't know that! I don't have consoles... But has civ_king and Caloust said, I think that was a game size limitation, and it's not even a "main series" game.

I'm pretty sure there will be an earth map.... And a few days later, a MOD Community Earth MAP with the largest map size that the game supports!

For some reason, I've always wanted Earth maps to be a lot bigger. I don't know why, but I'd just love a map in Civilization which nearly every notable civilization is included and covers their exact origins and area. You can't do that with maps in which the UK is around 8 tiles.

I also would like an Earth Map but in civ4 you couldn't choose additional civilizations, so it should be compatible with expansions and DLC and be bigger than huge maps in civ4.

I swear if one nuke is capable irradiating southern England again...

Theoretically, a 100MT 3 stage hydrogen bomb could destroy a very large part of the south of England.

The Tsar Bomba tested by Russia in 1961 was limited to 50MT and had a 2.3km fireball, caused total destruction up to 35km, could cause 3rd degree burns at 50km and, due to atmospheric focusing could, created blast damage on a 1000k range.

Of course it couldn't be launched by a ICBM at the time but, with technical advances, a few years later would be doable.

I bring it up because it's one of the only two game Sid Meier himself worked on directly.

The irony is that Earth was included in one of the DLC map packs for the game--and not one of the free ones...

That being said, I agree with the consensus that Civ 5 will have an Earth map from the start.

Hummm... This doesn't look promising. This DLC mumbo jumbo is going in the wrong direction.

Although I very rarely use the Earth map, I know a lot of people who do.

Let hope Firaxis doesn't bring some of the bad thigs of consoles to the PC.
(IMO the simple interface is one of the few good things) :(

To be fair, there were other map packs in CivRev that were free (three packs, as I recall, for a total of twelve or so maps/scenarios). It's just none of them contained Earth.

I don't see how they can stop people from creating an Earth map, so I don't see any problem with Earth being DLC only.
All you have to do is lay a hex grid over a map of the Earth and then copy it into civ :)

Yes I know... I just don't like some bad habits creeping into our beloved game.

But until we see the game, we'll have to trust Firaxis.

And then there's the actual work of balancing the starting positions.

That's because Rhye's map cheats. It enlarges Europe compared to the rest of the world. IMO this is better for gameplay and I prefer this type of map too.

Well when you think about it, it's logical. More "major" history happened in Europe(Rome, World Wars 1 & 2, Napoleon, etc.) than, say, Siberia.
