Thanks, Silverwave!

Welcome to civfanatics too. [party]

Notice the "art not final". That art IMO definitely looks very unfinal. :)

Unfortunately due to work (end of semester marking and a giant toy sale) i have been out of the civ loop these last few weeks after E3, so what have I missed that needs to be added to the first post?

There is some additional information in my posts that you might want to go through again:

Collector's edition doesn't interest me, personally.
Firaxis got way too lazy in deciding to stick to the old every nation has the same generic looking units system. I'm willing to bet within the first two months we'll get a mod that corrects this issue, like we did with Civ4.
I honestly can't even remember what Civ4's swordsman unit even looks like anymore because I haven't -had- to look at the generic one in so long. Getting a tiny figure of it wouldn't really mean much to me.

First off, I love the site and have been visiting/lurking for a long time, but now I hope to be a wee bit active, thanks for having me!

Look at the third screenshot in particular. There's an orange border that's on-screen in the bottom left, and a red border to the right, but there's no red or orange coloration on the minimap in those areas.

The orange line seems to be the cannon's firing range. The blue line below it seems to be the border's of a City-State, given that a) there's a few single-city colored borders on the map, all of which have the same blue (I guess?) colored dot to represent the city's tile, and b) there is no dual-colored border to signify a playable Civ.

Depending on which of the two minimap representations you look at, England seems to be represented either with White area-of-control and Red city-dots or vice versa, and I think I've seen on other screens Rome being represented similarly, with Gold and Royal Purple being used.

It also looks as though upon the taking of these shots that the way the minimap will function may not be fleshed out, or given that it's during demo use it just isn't functioning the way it will, as this is meant to demonstrate other things. Dunno.

What's wrong with the minimap in those screenshots? You do realise the borders are multicoloured?

Just to be clear, when I said borders are multi coloured, I meant the borders of a single civ.

Agree 100%.

Yes, the minimap probably isn't in a finished state yet (the constant green on the landmass looks pretty boring), but I can't yet see why it's broken.

Hi! That's my first post here, so greetings everybody!

I've just stumble upon this image at gamespot.com :

Looks like there's gotta be Mech units!

Here's the article about Collector's Edition :

Oh, for heaven's sake! $100 for this boxed set? Seems like they've found more ways than ever to market a game that isn't even finished yet. (Nor will anyone be able to play a copy until the Steam Activation date.)

Although what little information we have is interesting, the game is still a bit of a mystery and nobody really knows just what it will be like or how it will play.

Thanks for the post Silverware. I was checking this forum to see what new news had dribbled out and was really surprised to see both a "hard copy" edition of the game and of its units.

I for one could get back into painting and collecting units, if I could make myself quit playing Civ and free up more time in various ways. Older gamers probably painted a lot of models and figures back in the day. This was in the day when paper units had to be cut out and pasted on heavier stock in order to play strategy games.

From a marketing perspective, it is interesting to see the Civ franchise being extended.

2) There are 4 strategic resources in the top bar, Iron, Horse, Oil and something I can't work out. Anyone got a clue?

When looking at the units, saltpeter could make some sense.

Gamespot interview with lead designer John Shafer (video and transcript):

The gold/science/culture/espionage slider has gone. Let me repeat that: THE SLIDER HAS GONE!

GameSpot: It was hinted at in March that Civ V will also make larger changes to the economic game, just like changes to combat. Tell us about these updates to the economic game.

Jon Shafer: A big change that veterans will notice is that the age-old "slider," which required players to choose between focusing either on scientific research or on producing wealth--or some kind of middle ground between the two--has been eliminated. Gold and science have been completely split up and come from different sources now. We just didn't feel that the slider was adding a whole lot to the experience in Civ V. In previous games, the objective was nearly always to run with as much science as one could afford, making the occasional change to upgrade units or trade for a tech or something. The new system requires less turn-to-turn management and better rewards long-term planning. Most science now comes from your population, though specialist populations and unique tile improvements also contribute.

Bigger change than going from tiles to hex or 1upt IMO.
