Civ 5 Design Challenge IV - History/Eras

Its interesting so few of the designs have taken a stab at the larger great powers of the war. Germany, Britain, France, Russia, and the Ottomans, not represented yet. Only the U.S., Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Japan. Very fascinating.

My bet is that save for France and Britain (and Britain's a bit iffy on those regards), all of those were represented as actual mods, while Austria-Hungary is the only of the latter you mentioned that has become a mod.

Modifying a design I had inside of my list of "Civilizations that would be cool to make"

Sweden (Gustav III)
UA: Kultur Era -
Gain a large sum of points towards Great Artists and Great Musicians whenever a Golden Age begins. Upon the discovery of "Drama and Poetry" gain a free Great Writer . Great Writers are earned 25% faster, however, this becomes 50% during a Golden Age .

UB: Teater -
Replaces the Opera House. Whenever a Great Work has been created gain Golden Age points. Yields +1 more Culture for every 8 Tourism output.

UU: Regemente -
Replaces the Rifleman. Gathers Culture when attacking a civilization that you are at least Exotic with. Has +5% strength for every Spy that is stationed as a Diplomat.

Just like I hopped in on the Mechanics Design Challenge, I figured I'd start participating in these as well!

The Englightenment Era has any number of good rulers to choose from, but some are already in-game (Catherine II) and some have already been done (Frederick II/Joseph II by JFD). Granted, they could be done differently for the purposes of fitting the theme, but I figured I'd go with someone I haven't seen yet:

Grand Duchy of Tuscany
Leader: Leopold I (side note: he was Leopold II as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, but Leopold I when he was Grand Duke of Tuscany)

(Unique Ability) Pillars of Order

Adopting a Social Policy or Ideological tenet grants progress toward the next Golden Age. +1 Global Happiness from each adopted Social Policy tree (doubled for finished trees) and Ideology tier. During Golden Ages, excess Happiness and Unhappiness from Citizens and Specialists is generated as Culture.​

(Unique Building) Ospedale sui Pazzi

Replaces the Hospital. In addition to the benefits of the Hospital, contains a Scientist Specialist slot and causes the City to enter We Love the King (Duke?) Day when a Golden Age dawns.​

(Unique Building) Accademia di Belle Arti

Replaces the Hermitage. In addition to the benefits of the Hermitage, +1 Golden Age Points from Great Works and +1 Local Happiness from theming bonuses throughout the empire. Doubles the Culture bonus of Golden Ages (to +40%).​

(disclaimer: my italian no es bueno, so "ospedale sui pazzi" is most likely not the correct way of saying "hospital of/for the insane;" feel free to correct me)

Background, since I figure it's helpful in some way to know what I was going for: Leopold is a lesser-known so-called "englightened monarch," mostly because his reforms weren't as sweeping or impactful as, say, Frederick II or Joseph II's. Most of his successful reforms in Florence (and Tuscany) revolved around how criminals and deviants were handled, and he paved the way for many of his fellow monarchs of the time to abolish capital punishment, torture, and the like, so I figured it only fair to make him a Happiness-based Civ. He also was the first monarch in Europe to establish health support for the insane or mentally ill (in the "legge sui pazzi," or "law of the insane") hence the Hospital UB (and its namesake).

UA: The Tulip Period
Gain science boosts any time you or someone you have a diplomatic or trade arrangement with (including ) upgrades a unit. Unit upgrades cost less based on placement in the literacy demographic.

UU: Nizam-I Djedid
Replaces rifleman. Produces bursts of culture upon defeating barbarian units, doubled for rebels. Receives a strength bonus for every civilization with a diplomatic or trade (including ) arrangement with you that has unlocked more social policies than you.

UB: Medrese
Replaces public school. For every faith-producing building and wonder in the city, food is increased by 5% (max 30%). When the scientist specialist slot is filled, receive +1 science for every faith produced in the city.

UA: Josephine Storm
Social policies are marked as either enlightened or conservative upon adoption, meaning that they may grant you extra yields at the cost of temporary anarchy. Government buildings yield +1 happiness and also yield +2 culture during golden ages.

UB: Staatschule
Replaces public school. In addition to the Public school's effects, the Staatschule also grants +1 culture for every 5 citizens in the city, increased to +2 if the city has followers of religions other than your own. Does not have any prerequisite buildings.

UU: Freikorps
In addition to being slightly cheaper than the rifleman it replaces, the Freikorps also gains +1 XP from combat per each adjacent melee unit. Eliminates resistance when stationed in cities, and also gains XP from doing so.

All policies grant golden age points, but Enlightened policies will grant you a yield based on their tree at the cost of causing anarchy for a few turns (scales with the era). List of yields from each tree:

UA: War of Spanish Succession: May earn Legitimacy* which provides unique bonuses when accumulated. For every Cultural Great Person ever expended in the Empire the costs of Social Policies decrease by 2%

UU: Dragoon: Replaces Cavalry. Earns a +5% Combat Bonus for every consecutive turn it performs an attack (max.35%). May dismount when wounded which restores its health at the cost of Movement. Available at Gunpowder rather than Military Science.

UB: Sociedad Economica: Replaces the Stock Exchange. Worked Resources connected to your Trade Network in this City provide +1 of a random yield. +15% Gold. Available at Economics.

0-25 Legitimacy: No Bonus

25-50 Legitimacy: Specialists generate no additional Unhappiness.

50-75 Legitimacy: The Capital enters a We Love the King Day whenever a Social Policy is adopted.

75-100 Legitimacy: All Civilizations that you share an alliance with may provide a Unit whenever War is declared against you.

Japan - Tokugawa Yoshimune

UA: Sakoku: At the start of every era, may choose one exclusive trading partner (Increasing to 2 in the industrial era) May not make international trade routes to civs other than your trading partners, but +3 Gold and +3 Culture (scaling with era) for each trade route to your partners.

UU: Nengyoji (Replaces Great Merchant): May not make a trade mission, but generates +10% Gold and +5% production in cities it is garrisoned in.

UB: Rangaku School (Replaces Public School): Unlocks earlier, at economics, and generates +2 science for every trade route to or from a trading partner in the city.

Whenever a Great General is produced, gain points towards Great Artists, Writers and Musicians in all cities. Garrisoned units provide +1 culture and +1 production for every Great Work slot in a city.

Fusilier (replaces Rifleman)
Slightly stronger at strength 38 and have the Great Generals I promotion.

Officer's School (replaces Military Academy)
The Officer's School gives the Blitz promotion to all melee units and each filled Great Work slot gives +5exp.

Trying to handle Sakoku without outright stopping you from trading

Sakoku didn't entirely ban trading, there was still a port on Satsuma (southern Japan) that accepted Dutch trading ships, which means your take on it is actually quite accurate! I think it could do with generating something other than Gold, though; for example, the Japanese studied a lot of stuff the Dutch brought with them, so perhaps increased Science and Culture yields as opposed to Gold? Just a suggestion. I like the spirit of the concept (though it's play a bit fast-and-loose with the idea of the "Enlightenment," which is generally associated with Europe, but the time frame sort of matches).
